Site Update: December 10, 2011
A little while ago, we released the first Sta.sh Updates article. The response was amazing.
We've fixed some of the issues you brought up last time, but there's still plenty to do. We've also been working on a lot of details that didn't come up in the feedback. It's a big list, so get ready!

Change Log

:bulletblue: Sta.sh now supports keyboard shortcuts! Hit up, down, left, right, and hit the Delete/Backspace key to remove any selected items. Hold the Shift key as you move around with the arrow-keys to select a bunch of files at once! - Added by kouiskas
:bulletblue: We've brought back the full word "Comments" instead of using the small speech bubble icon on the Journals in deviantART's footer, and the journals in the Journal Portal, making it a little easier on our newer community members - Added by kemayo

AC Month Spotlight On: Custom Dolls!
What is this?
This is the third installment of articles, written for Artisan Crafts Month, which introduce the Artisan Crafts sub-galleries by talking about what they are, how to do work within them, and featuring artwork from the galleries.  In this edition I will be talking about the Custom Dolls Gallery!
What are Custom Dolls?
Defintion from deviantART Gallery Description:
Custom dolls created from bases or by hand and are usually of porcelain, vinyl, or hard plastic. Custom dolls are not stuffed.
Custom dolls are different than Plushies in the sense that they are not stuffed, are not sewn, and are not made from textiles.  You can read from the description above a few of the things they can be made from.

Artisan Crafts interview with *noeling
An interview with noeling, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us!!
1) First off, please introduce yourself? Who are you, where are you from?
Hello everyone! My name's Noel Cruz and just like all of you, art has been my life long passion. I was born as well as raised in the Phiippines. English is part of standard education so I am blessed to speak both our native language of Tagalog as well as English. I am the third of 6 boys (that's right - all boys!),  so growing up was chaotic. My other sibling also possess natural artistic talent. It's rather sad, however that none of them nourished and pursued quite the way I did.
2) How did you get started doing your craft?
Being raised in a relatively poor family in the Philippines, I grew up without the comfort of material things. I found comfort and satisfaction from immersing myself in imagination. At the onset of my adolescense, I discovered and I had a particular fon

Doll Repaint of Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins
This one of a kind repainted doll is currently up for auction on ebay. Auction ends in approximately 2 hours. click on link below to view ebay auction:

This celebrity doll repaint was inspired by Julie Andrews' classic Disney character of Mary Poppins.

I used a 16-inch Mary Poppins doll here produced by Robert Tonner Doll company - a very nicely made facial sculpt but the facial paint left much to be desired. So, I completely removed factory facial painting and hand painted it to more faithfully replicate Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins. The doll's hair has been extensively restyled to more accurately represent the character's hairstyle from the movie.

The inset photo on the top center shows the doll as it looked originally before repainting.

Repaint is an artistic transformative process, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area and most importantly  faithfully replicating the lifelike features of a particular celebrity or personality in doll form. Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.

-- acrylic paint and ultra fine brushes

Fashion doll repainted as Angelina Jolie

I used a 16-inch vinyl Sybarite ball jointed doll produced by Superdoll of London. (Top middle inset photo shows the doll before the custom repaint. Sybarites are high-end collector ball-jointed dolls that are capable of achieving lifelike poses. This makeover required complete removal of the original factory facial paint on the doll and repainting it in the likeness of Angeline Jolie. A brunette wig was carefully chosen for the doll and then custom cut and restyled for this makeover.

Repaint is a new form of pop art, wherein the doll's face is treated like a three dimensional canvas, with the added challenge of painting within a very small area . Since dolls are basically miniature pieces, brush strokes and shading have to be very controlled and precise.

As a Filipino, I am deeply saddened by the recent devastation that has befallen my country, with many towns decimated and thousands killed from the recent worst ever recorded typhoon in history that ravaged the Philippines a few days ago. It would be a disservice if I didn't take this moment to call to everyone for whatever assistance, help and support we can extend to the victims of this horrific disaster. I feel grateful and honored for your support of my art, but we are first and foremost human beings and I have faith in the power of humanity especially in moments of real crisis.

Many thanks to everyone for allowing me to reach to you and your hearts so that we can come together and help those who are suffering.

Below is a link to relief organizations where we can send help. Whatever we can give, even prayers, will go  long way in helping our hurting brothers and sisters.

As an artist, I strive to always challenge myself and push the boundaries. My passion for hand painted miniature celebrity figures stems from my love of portraits, which has been my whole artistic arc since childhood.

The satisfaction of not only the ability to recreate a person's likeness but to recreate it in lifelike 3D miniature form (i.e. dolls and action figures) is one that I consider immeasurable.

Repaint is not your standard mainstream artistic arena, but I am extremely grateful that it has been gaining recognition for the last 10 years.

Repaint is a portrait taken to a whole other level.
