The New Logo is Not Good.

This might come across as harsh, so let me say this first: I love deviantArt and I've always been very happy to be a part of this great community. All this is strictly my opinion.

Now, I don't want to be "that guy" who doesn't like it when things change just because it's different. That's totally not who I am. But in this case, I'm really not digging the new deviantArt logo. It's barely definable as what it's supposed to be. There is supposed to be a "d" and an "A" created by the negative space or whatever, but that's quite a stretch. It looks more like stylized parsley flakes. It's just a green... thing. The reasoning behind this choice for the new logo somehow manages to come across both as pretentious high-art snobbery and out-of-touch corporate branding nonsense. At any rate, it certainly does not represent the deviantArt that I've known for all these years. It doesn't seem to visually represent much of anything to me, except maybe a modernist beanstalk farm.
I understand wanting to refresh the look of the brand and all that, but I don't agree with this drastic direction. Why even change to such a different new logo? The old logo was perfectly fine. Why not just give that a polish? It was a clear "d" and "A" that we could all believe in and identify this website with. I felt a connection with that logo and what it stood for. I have a hoodie and several t-shirts with that logo, and I was proud to wear them and represent the site as one of its users. Here's a picture of me in some of my dA gear.


They don't even make shirts any more. I wish they still did, but I don't know if I'd buy one with their new vague and nonsensical icon on it. I can't imagine trying to explain it to anyone who didn't already know what deviantArt is.

Honestly, maybe I'm wrong, and I'm clearly not privy to their decision making process, but I just don't see how this change benefits the company in any way. Are more people going to use the site now that the logo is different? Is there going to be more money generated by this new logo? I doubt it. So what's the point? What long-term advantage does this new logo have?

So the long and short of it is that I love dA but I'm not on board with this logo. I can't be the only one to feel this way, but whether you agree with me or not I would like to read your thoughts. Maybe, if you like it, you can make a case for this strange collection of green angles.

Anyway, everything else is cool. The site is good, the new app is good. But the logo is not good. So there.
