You do not have to read this but this is just going to be my reasoning as to why I say the above statement.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, for some reason there has been an uptick in the notes asking for permission to use my artwork on RPG forums/blogs/websites. So much so that I'm getting quite tired of having to answer them. I fear that if I don't answer them then the people asking will automatically assume it's an 'okay' on my end.

No, it's not.
I do not allow any of my work or characters to be used by other people unless they own the character or bought the image from me.
A lot of my work is commissioned work, meaning it's a paid piece of artwork of someone else's character/idea. That being said, it would be not only unethical of me but also way out of line to allow someone else to use these images of these peoples' characters which they initially paid for.

My personal characters mean a lot to me and each one has it's own back story and personality. So, while you may think 'Oh this Fritz guy would be a perfect visual representation of my werewolf vampire guy!!' Fritz already has his own story.
No, he's not a werewolf -- he's a dog, never has been a human. He's also been my character since 2009.
Each one of my characters is a piece of my mind and heart. They're special to me... Hardly just 'images'.

Like every other artist on here, I work very hard on my artwork -- Hours and days, and I put a lot of thought into each piece. It's theme, the mood, the thoughts going through the character(s) mind... It's all pre-planned.
To have someone come along and just pluck those images up and use them or deface them for their personal use regardless of these facts and regardless of how innocent their intentions may be is just very hard to think about. It's almost akin to vandalism in a way.

I know I know -- "I just want to really use your work because I enjoy it and it's so perfect for my character(s)!"
Again, my characters are mine and as such each one has their own look and personality. Their 'look' is a result of their story which, yeah in some cases isn't entirely unique, but it is special to me.

Just... don't ask anymore. I know it's flattering and everything but after a while of like, 50 notes in 2 months all asking 'Can I have permission to use your work on my American/Polish/German/Russian/Armenian/etc RPG blog??' it just gets to be a bit much. (That number is a slight exaggeration, mind you. It feels like 50 notes.)
I don't care what kind of RPG board it is or how 'responsibly' you'll use my work -- I'll still say no.
Call it selfish but I don't like the idea of someone using my hard work and my characters for their own gain and ideas/stories.
I post my work here for you to look at enjoy, not to use freely. Asking may be polite but it's still kind of rude since again, you're basically asking to use someone's artwork as just a 'face' to your character, despite the character you're using already having it's own background.

Anyway, I posted this because I needed something like this in my gallery. I know I'll likely get more notes asking because people WON'T read this, but at least I can just copy-paste this explanation instead of having to sheepishly find a polite way to say 'No'.
It's not a work of art by any means but it's to the point, which is what I wanted.
Now, that being said, Yes --

You may use this on your page if you want.

I see a lot of stolen art in Youtube videos. Autors of those videos never even credit the artists.
They say that they can use any "images from the internet" because it's a "fair use".
So in fact no one can protect their art?

Would you mind if I use some of this but give you credit for it? I've been having issues with people stealing my art lately and I've been looking for something like this

Hello! I have found a YouTuber using your artwork in a map, me and another person confronted them before her comment was taken down and I was called a faggot, if you would like me to note you the name I will or I can just comment it here. I also have screenshots if you need them ^-^

As always Kato you seem to be some of the smarter people among DA. You should see the idiots I have to deal with on facebook who think "Because it's online it's free to use" Or "I will share it, it's not like I'm taking credit for it" Or the worst one." They should be happy that I'm sharing there art they're becoming more popular."

Ugh just shoot me now.

No they aren't. They're excuses people use because they haven't anything better to do with there lives then take from other people. None of these reasons we're even fit to be considered justified. They we're poor sad excuses and thats it.

I don't agree, if those persons give credit to the artist and sources i really don't see the problem.

The problem is the artist doesn't give consent. If the artist doesn't give consent then credit or not it's still stealing. Whether or not the person takes credit for the image isn't the entire point that Kato is trying to make.

people have been taking artwork for a long time and thinking it's okay. You wouldn't go into someone's house steal there tv and say "It's cool, it's not mine I'm just using it to show my friends." You wouldn't take someone's baby and say the baby's not mine I just wanted to show it off to my parents.

There is no such thing as a good reason for theft. In the end the artist never gave there permission so it's not classified for them to use it. Use common sense if your going to use people's art at least have the decency to ask them. If you don't see a problem with that then why are you even commenting on here?

This is all beyond my reasoning, especially when you use the word "stealing" and those examples are way to exagerated for me. Putting aside "common sense", we just have different points of view. Sorry if i don't understand the last question neither.

It's not a matter of having a different view.

There is only one way to look at it. You either have the artists consent or you don't. If you don't it's classified as stealing no further questions about it. It does not matter if you credit or not it's still stealing doesn't matter how you look at it.

Maybe, but I do not understand why so much sense of belonging as well.
For me there is not an absolute point of view. But you can believe what you want.

In my pre-DeviantArt days when I used images I found online as my profile pictures I was very careful not to use images of people's character avatars this way, as such would be a form of impersonation, I thought.

Clarifying. Does this mean I can't post your art on a social media site, provided I give full credit including a link to your dA and any character info I can reference?

On Google+ I see a lot of roleplaying communities featuring repackaged characters from deviantart. Mostly furries. I think it's just lazy, maybe a little unscrupulous.

I would request others to not repackage. They can post if they want but shouldn't overwrite, rename, or contradict original character info, At least part of what I mean by repackaging. Just using the image and adding unrelated bio.

I consider repackaging a form of impersonation, especially if it's your character avatar.

In the data age you are making an unreasonable and probably unenforceable demand. People will post something they want to post. You must adapt, not resist.
