Okay, I've tried following your intructions (which by the way they are bery accurate, unlike the videos I've found), but I have a slight problem.
I've already created my character, and followed your instructions until the last step. For some reason, even though I named my set as the character and everything, the programm doesn't seem to recognize it. And this "Assign Actor" doesn't pop out. Any ideas as for why it happens?

Nvm, something weird happened... Apparently, while in the Designer, I assigned its class to "Actor". Maybe that gives out an easier way?
Think you could look for it...? I'm not sure, because I'm a "noob" at this XD

Out of curiosity, how do I use the character sets? Can I use variables to set the expressions and bodies being used?

Okay, so...
You need to import the object from your assets folder onto the scene. Then right click the mouse. Click 'create new actor'. Name them and give them a text color if you want to. Then delete the object from the scene. Go to your actions catalog and select 'Enter actor'. Select your new actor and place them on the scene. You have just made an actor and are ready for changing states.
Now for the expressions: select the option on the action catalog to make a new paragraph. On the 'name' option on the property inspector, select your actor's name on the drop down menu. Then type some stuff for the time being in the dialog box. Now, under this should be a 'change state' drop down menu. Here you can select a change of state.
You can also do it without the dialog (I just prefer to do the first method) by select 'change state' from the action catalog and selecting your actor and their change of state.
You can also change the state in the 'enter actor' command, by selecting the state you want them first appear in (besides Default)
I suppose you could use variables...but that's not my field of specialty. This is the easy way.
Hope I could help!

//Also can you use animated gifs or animated imagesets for this?

Yes you can. But not for gif, it wouldn't work on Novelty so you have to convert it into animation :)

what program is this?

A visual novel making engine called Novelty. It allows you to make the games, free, and with no knowledge of coding. It uses a point and click interface. If you are interested in making these kinds of things, here is the download link (it's safe, don't worry.)
