SHOGGOTH!!

Here is another double page chapter illustration for the upcoming 7th Edition of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu RGP core rules.   The left half is mostly blank because that's where the text will be overlaid.  Everyone loves a shoggoth, right??  If you're not familiar, they are a product of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft's imagination, they fist appeared in his novel 'At The Mountains of Madness', currently in limbo for a major motion picture and well worth the read.   Astute examiners might be able to figure out roughly where and when this takes place.  As is my tradition to make puzzles for myself within my paintings, I focused on the transparent qualities of the amoebic creature.

Acrylic on paper, roughly 12x18"

ive always seen the shoggoth depicted as an amorphous blob with multiple eyes.

Thank you! :)  I tried to focus on some aspects I don't normally include, such as iridescence and transparency.

Amazing!  Quite a few years since I read "At the Mountains of Madness" - but this captures the shoggoth perfectly, to my mind  :) I love the little trilobites too  ;)

Thank you! :)   After some years I believe you're the first to comment on the trilobites, I thought it would be an interesting way to express how long ago parts of the story occurred.

Trilobites are a peculiar interest of mine (did you know that they're actually members of the arachnid family?) - and they go so well with shoggoths, thank you for bringing them together!

Thank you very much!!  I appreciate yours as well, for me it would take quite some courage to express that side of myself and put it out there... I find it encouraging and inspiring! :)

I have just noticed this, very nice one, Paul! One of the most convincing and true-to-the-stories image of a shoggoth, I've seen so far. Also nice touch with the trilobites in the background.

Once again, thank you Markus! :)  I tried to make everything fit, down to the five pointed architecture of the background.   Much of my efforts were just about trying to depict the qualities of the creature- trying to convey it's transparency and amorphous qualities.  I think you're the first to notice the trilobites, I thought it would be a nice suggestion of how far back in time the subject is.  I've been gaining an interest in fossils recently, it seemed like a nice way to work the subjects together.

I like the "tusk" feeling it gives.

Thank you!  I think those tentacles started out more as a means to exhibit the transparent/translucent nature of the shoggoth, but they ended up also helping suggest scale by giving it that elephantine tusk look as well as hint at how they might be used in utilitarian situations (like a bulldozer).

Thanks for sayin' so man, I appreciate it. I've always wanted to draw a legit Shoggoth or Night Gaunt, this needs to happen! :)

I think you need to make them a priority, I am sure you'd do them justice! :)
