Naruto: Obito Daitai Monogatari Chapter 19

The sights, smells and sounds of Uzushiogakure resonated with Obito. He finally built up the will to visit his grandmother's grave. He took a bouquet of yellow roses that he'd gotten from the Yamanaka flower shop. They were her favorite. She kept them on the dining room table in an ornate vase adorned in the Uchiha colors.
He stood there for what seemed like a lifetime before speaking. “Hi, obaa-chan. I got you something. It's those flowers you love.” He set the flowers on tree grass in front of her tombstone. “I am so sorry I wasn't here when you needed me, obaa-chan. I'm sorry you died not knowing that I was ok.”
He laid down, looking up at the clouds as they passed overhead. He could smell the roses laying next to his head. There were so many thoughts in his head. So many emotions. He couldn’t focus on one thought long enough to formulate a sentence.

Team Doutou completed their mission with minimal casualties. Doutou ordered Aiko and Kaede to return to Konoha as he and Hizashi transported the prisoners to Houzuki Castle to be detained. The fires quelled and the villagers calmed, the team parted ways. Behind the girls followed Black and white Zetsu.
They knew of Hizashi’s sensory abilities and laid in wait for the perfect time to spring their trap. Aiko was the last piece of their puzzle, especially since they lost Obito. She had potential. But would she be able to reach the potential that Madara needed in such a short amount of time? Would he be able to cultivate that hatred and make her into the weapon he needed her to be?
Hours had passed as the Zetsu secretly followed behind Aiko and Kaede. Nightfall was near and the 2 girls thought it was time to make camp for the night, neither knowing they were being watched all this time. The 2 girls sat around a campfire sharing a meal.
Black Zetsu emerged fr

Minato returned to HIS office and sat in HIS chair at HIS desk. He hung his robe and hat on the coat rack by the door. Shortly after he sat down, Kakashi and Obito walked in to his office. He summoned them for his first official mission assignment as Hokage.
Obito had not changed the way he spoke to Minato. “Hey, Minato-sensei. What’s up?”
Kakashi interjected, “Call him Hokage-sama or Yondaime-sama while we are in the office, idiot.”
Minato smiled at his students. He wished Rin was there to see his progress, as well. The fact that he couldn’t save her weighed heavily on his heart. “I wanted my first mission assignment as Hokage to go to you two. Your mission is to protect Kushina in the last few months of her pregnancy.  A lot of enemies know that she’s the jinchuuriki. If anyone finds out that she’s also pregnant, she could be targeted for attack. The seal that keeps the 9-tails in will be at its weakest when sh

Hiruzen recently announced his retirement. The village was in a frenzy getting prepared for the inauguration of the 4th hokage. Hiruzen has stressed, happy and sad that his time was coming to an end. But he felt it was finally his time to relax.
In one of his final acts, he summoned Kushina, Shikaku, Obito and Mikoto Uchiha to his office. They all stood in front of his desk. It was early and the room was dim. “You 4 have been gathered here because there are reports of the Uzumaki clan has been attacked. Your job is to go to Uzushiogakure and investigate this attack. We’ve sent messages ahead, but there has been no word from them.
Shikaku. You will be field commander on this mission. Obito…”

Minato returned from the summit with Hiruzen. It was time for Hiruzen to announce his retirement to the people of Konoha. In doing so, it was also time to announce his successor. This would be hard to announce due to all of the people who would show their disdain toward him: Orochimaru, Fugaku Uchiha, many more war heroes. And Danzo? Danzo would surely have words for Hiruzen. Words that he didn’t care to hear.
Minato rushed home to see his wife and students. As he opened the door, he saw them all in the living room. Kakashi was reading on the couch. Next to him was Obito, eating a bowl of ramen he had made from leftovers. Kushina was laying on the loveseat, looking at baby clothes and daydreaming about when the baby was born. “Everyone! I have some really important news to tell you all.”
Obito turned to him with a mouthful of ramen and muttered, “What is it, sensei?”

The day had come to sign the treaty with Iwa. Minato was the only escort Hiruzen was going to take with him. He felt that if they were to discuss peace, there shouldn’t need to be a show of power. But if anything were to happen, who better to have at his side than his successor. Though Minato didn’t know this info just yet.
They terms for the agreement were that the 2 Kage would bring 1 bodyguard and all peace talks would be overseen by Rasa as mediator. Though the war had torn through the Land of Wind, Rasa was the most level headed and impartial of the other Kage. With his newfound respect for Konoha through Obito, he’d not only do what was best for Suna, but for the other 2 villages, as well, to protect Obito… or so Hiruzen assumed.
Before departing, Minato and Hiruzen prepped for the mission. “Given the severity of the mission,” Hiruzen explained, “this mission is classified as S-Rank. This missionis of the utmost importan

The constant fog rolled through Kirigagure no Sato. The village was always a bit chilly but no one seemed to be bothered. The 3rd Mizukage sat in his dark chambers waiting for his ANBU implant to return from his mission. Weeks had passed since the daimyos convened so it was time for the shinobi to return.
3 knock on the sturdy wooden door. The Mizukage called, “Enter!”
The door slowly swung open. 2 tall slender figures walked in, the shorter of the 2 carried a large sword. It was almost as tall and almost as wide as he was. The sword was Kubikiribouchou and the man was “The Demon,” Zabuza Momochi. The other was an up and coming ANBU shinobi and heir to Samehada, Kisame Hoshigaki.
The young men walked up to the MIzukage’s desk. Kisame’s blue skin glistened in the dim light shining through the window behind the Mizukage. His eyes resembled that of the great white shark and his teeth, like Zabuza and every other member of the 7 Swor

“Pregnant.” The word rang in Minato’s ears like his morning alarm. “Pregnant.” His eyes stared off into the distance as if there were no walls in his kitchen. His mouth gaping wide. “Pregnant... My wife is pregnant,” he thought. A single tear ran down Minato’s face.
Tears welled in Kushina’s eyes. “Minato? Please say something.” He stood silent and motionless. “Minato? Please…?” His silence broke her heart. She thought her husband didn’t want their baby. The tears that welled in her eye turned into a river that ran down her cheeks.
Her cry snapped him out of his daze. He grabbed his bawling wife and whispered, “I love you.” Kakashi and Obito had no idea what was going on. “Boys,” Minato called out with a huge smile. “I’m going to be a father!” His words warmed her soul. Tears of sorrow turned into tears of joy.

2 weeks had passed since Minato took on the Iwa army. Oonoki*, the Tsuchikage, sent a messenger bird to Konoha to request a meeting with the Hokage and discuss terms for a peace treaty. Hiruzen was reluctant to accept, but did in the interest of peace. Minato was to be his bodyguard in the event that it was a trap.
Hiruzen sat in his white Hokage robe at the head of the long ornate wooden table in the Council Room, his Hokage hat on the table in front of him. His 2 advisors on each side of the table and Danzo sat across from him. Danzo was an older man, the same age as Hiruzen, with black hair and gray strands mixed in. If not for the wrinkles, no one would be know he’s in his 50s. He was covered in bandages from “old battle wounds” as he told the public. They were actually to hide the scars from his experiments with Orochimaru.
“I think we should go forward with the peace treaty and negotiate terms with Oonoki,” Hiruzen proclaimed.
Danzo protested. With t

Minato was called to the Hokage’s office for an urgent mission the night before . Hiruzen was informed that Iwagakure*** was on the move. Hiruzen was tired of the bloodshed and the wanted peace. After sending the peace treaty to Iwagakure, they responded with a platoon of ninja heading straight for Konoha.
Minato’s mission was to assemble a team of elite ninjas and subdue as many as possible WITHOUT KILLING them. Minato could think of a few ninja’s powerful enough to stand with him in a battle of this magnitude: Fugaku Uchiha, Choza Akimichi, Kushina and Shisui Uchiha. Minato didn’t want to involve anyone else in this battle.
Kushina had been sick a lot recently. To the point where she hadn’t been able to accept a mission for 2 weeks.
No. Minato would handle this alone. Besides, Fugaku was on assignment. If he needs help, he’ll summon Gamabunta.
Minato rushed home and kissed Kushina as she slept before setting off to confront the enemy.

Timeline relative to Obito
3 total years have passed since Obito went missing. He was "dead" for almost a year before his triumphant return and the loss of Rin at the age of 14
He had been in recovery and rehab for 8 months before being released to live with Kakashi just a few months after his 15th birthday.
The war wages on. Kakashi has just turned 12 but hates celebrating his birthday. It is now January and they embark on their first mission together after Obito's return.

It took Obito a couple days to get home from his mission. Kakashi had been waiting for Obito to return so that he could deliver his report to the 3rd Hokage. Kakashi called Asuma and Suzume to meet in front of the Hokage’s office. Asuma was worried his father wouldn’t acknowledge his effort on the mission.
They waited for their turn to report to the 3rd. “I can’t believe you Obito-kun. On your first mission, you run off without your team.”
Obito hung his head low. “I know it was a jackass move Kakashi. You don’t have to remind me. I just… it was the right thing to do.”
Asuma chimed in, “I agree with Obito-kun. Granted, he could’ve gone about it another way.”
“Obito-san? What were you thinking?”
“I thought that the Daimyo needed to be saved. In that moment, I didn’t see them as enemies. They were comrades that needed help. So I acted.”
Kakashi put his hand on Obito’s shoulder,

The ninja removed his ANBU mask. He was mid 20s with green eyes and black spiky hair. His lust for blood was written on his face. “Me? Run? Noooo. I just didn’t want help when I killed you. There's no honor in that.”
Seito became curious. “Who are you?”
“My name is Hideki Nishimura.”
“I’m Seito of Konohagakure.”
They each drew kunai and darted toward each other, clashing blades.

Obito’s shadow clone caught up to Kakashi, Asuma and Shizune at the rendezvous point. It was a small, shabby hut on the Land of Fire/Grass Country border. He told Kakashi that he was going to escort the Daimyo of the Wind Country to safety and meet back in Konoha.

"I promise. Do you honestly think they have enough men to get by me?”
Chiriku, visibly disturbed, nodded. “You’re right, sempai. A few ninjas shouldn’t be a challenge for you.” Chiriku took the Daimyo and continued forward.

After reaching the rendezvous point, Asuma was assigned to sit closest to the Daimyo. The Daimyo was charismatic and had big dreams for the future of the world, civilians and ninja alike. Asuma felt he was everything his father was not. The Daimyo and Asuma shared their dreams of the future they both envisioned. Asuma felt a connection to the Daimyo. He felt that the Daimyo’s vision was his own.
Kakashi and Obito tailed the garrison in wait for an ambush. With tension so high and the importance of this meeting, there was bound to be someone coming to assassinate the Daimyo. Kakashi and Obito summoned their ninken to scout ahead. Kakashi’s pack circled the south and eastern side of the garrison. I can’t believe you’re gone. I miss you so much, obaa-chan. I’ve kept myself so busy that I haven’t allowed myself to grieve for you and Rin properly. There were so many things I wanted to do with you, so many pranks I wanted to pull… so many meals I won’t be able to enjoy with you.” Tears began streaming down his face. He made no motion to wipe them, either.

“On the plus side, I made up with Kakashi. I can even match him, now. I should make Jonin soon. I’ve gotten a lot stronger since the last time you saw me. My mangekyou sharingan awakened and my body has healed up 100%. Kakashi and I also make a really good team. I guess you were right all along about us being friends. I wish you were here to see it… see me. Hold me. I want to cry to you, but I can’t. Instead, I’m crying over you. I love you, obaa-chan.”

The clouds seemed to cry with Obito as it started to rain uncharacteristically out of season in Konoha. Obito took that as a sign that his words reached his grandmother’s ears. He could sense her there. He could feel her warmth through the slight chill of the light rain. He could smell the scent of her perfume, which she made from the yellow roses. He felt her touch his face as she always did when he was sad. His anger, his rage, his pain all seemed to melt away.

Her presence faded. This time he was ok with it. He knew she was watching over him and at peace. Finally able to rest knowing her little boy was growing up strong.

In loving memory of Stephanie E. Wilson. A loving mother and friend. I know you’ll be watching me become the Hokage one day. 11/14/1954-09/17/2018

Itachi woke up early and made himself a light breakfast. He reflected on the sights and sounds of war. He took a life. An enemy shinobi attacked him after Itachi rescued him. He reacted, slashing the enemy's throat. It was more accidental and instinctual than anything. He hated the feeling it gave him. He felt like a piece of him died with that shinobi. his father's words stuck with him ever since. "This is war. Its not a war between people. It's a war between nations. That's why strangers kill wach other meaninglessly."

The memories of the battlefield will forever haunt him.

Fugaku came down from his room and greeted his son with a pat on the head. Today, he needed to speak with Minato. He wanted to know what kind of Hokage he was going to be and if he could put his faith in him as he did Hiruzen.

“Itachi?” Fugaku had a soft tone to his voice. It was far more gentle than the one he used as captain of the police force. “I am going to see the Hokage today. You do well in school and mind your manners, okay?”

Itachi nodded his head with a slight smile. The smile hid his sorrow. Itachi shared very different view than his militant father.

He left shortly after his father and walked to school as told. There were a group of boys picking on one of Itachi’s classmates. At first, he wanted to just walk by as if he didn’t notice. His heart sank as he heard his comrade cry out for his help as he walked past. Itachi stopped in his tracks. He couldn’t walk by and let them beat up on someone. He clutched his satchel, “why do you feel the need to be violent to another shinobi of the same village as you?”

The bigger of the boys shouted out, “so the class rep wants to join in the fun?”

Itachi did not want to perpetuate the cycle of violence. “Not at all. I don’t like your kinds of games. I think you should let him go. I need his help in the class before Oruka-sensei and Anko-chan get there.”

The bully walked over to itachi. He towered over him, but Itachi stood tall. The other 2 boys stopped beating up their classmate and circled Itachi. He stood tall. Unflinching.

He walked past the bully and helped the boy off of the ground. After he dusted the dirt off of the boy and helped him to his feet, he turned around, once again, face to face with the 3 bullies. He stood tall. Unflinching. Unwavering.

Itachi grabbed the boy by the wrist, never breaking eye contact with the largest bully. “We’re leaving now.” Itachi walked through their line, pulling the other boy along with him.

“Itachi-kun, thank you for helping me.” The boy was elated. “I didn’t think you would help me since, ya know, we don’t talk in class. My name is Ryo. Ryo Hashiba.”

Itachi knew who he was. He had memorized the faces and names of every student in his class. “Hashiba-san? I’ll protect you.”

The 2 boys walked into their classroom. To their surprise, Anko had already arrived. She was standing at the chalkboard wearing a skin tight shirt and short skirt. She turned around just as Itachi and Ryo entered the room. She locked eyes with Itachi and he froze in place. The red glow of his Sharingan flashed.

She walked over to him and leaned in close so she could whisper into his ear. “I love that I can light up your eyes like that.” He didn’t even realize that his Sharingan had activated. She smiled slightly and walked back to the front of the classroom.

Saisu Kamano was already asleep in the back of the class. The rest of the students started walking in followed by Oruka-sensei. His voice boomed as all of the kids scurried to their seats, “class will begin now. everyone, please, be seated

The clash of steel rang in the early morning dew at training ground 17 in the middle of Konoha. Might Guy and Hayate Gekko were locked in shinobi kumite with Chouza Akimichi watching over the match. Guy was a taijutsu prodigy, but he had his hands full with Hayate, the blade master. Chouza often pitted these two against one another to bolster their abilities. Hayate lacked stamina, which Guy had an abundance of. Guy lacked fluidity in battle and couldn’t improvise.

Hayate moderated the fight even though he was on the defensive for most of the battle. Chouza noted that no matter how hard Guy tried, he couldn’t get the upper hand. In the four years and numerous battles with various weapons, Guy had never beaten Hayate while he used a sword. Chouza praised them both for their respected skill, calling them “natural born geniuses that are born only once in a generation.”

Hayate eventually won the fight. Chouza walked over to the boys and assessed the battle. “You’re still too straight forward, Guy. You try to dictate the fight, but a good opponent can turn that against you.”

“Yes, sensei,” huffed Guy.

“Hayate! You did well, but you are too defensive. You have great battle instincts. Don’t let your opponent dictate the battle. These are life and death battles. The faster you end it, the better.”

“Thank you, Akimichi-san.”

Chouza was a generous man. After their battle he always treated them to as much food as they could eat at Ichiraku Ramen.

“You’re finally awake, Yagura-san.” the deep, raspy voice came from the Mizukage, Saizo. He was also Yagura’s teacher. It was only natural that he would choose Yagura as his successor. Saizo had trained him since he graduated from the academy. Yagura was the sole survivor from that team all those years ago. “That took longer than I expected.” The room was cold yet humid. It was humid everywhere in the village hidden by mist.

“Saizo-dono? Sorry to have kept you waiting. I was talking to Isobu-dono,” replied Yagura from underneath his heavy blanket.

Saizo was shocked to hear that. “The beast has a name?”

Yagura sat up in his hospital bed and nodded. “He’s had a long, rich life over the years.”

Saizo stood up from his seat. His long black hair draped over his shoulders with streaks of gray mixed in. The age was setting in on hi slender face. Wrinkles and frown lines had set. His white sleeveless haori hung down to his knees. He was tired. It was written all over his face. “Yagura,” he called. “Your time will come soon. I have much faith in you. I don’t have much time left and you’ll need to prove that you’re the strongest in Kirigakure.”

“What are you asking of me, sensei?”

A sense of resolve came over Saizo. “We will fight. In front of the entire village. You will show them that you are the strongest shinobi. You WILL strike me down.”

“Saizo-dono?!? Why?”

“I only have one fight left in me. I wish to have my last battle against a strong opponent. Who better than the next Mizukage and the jinchuuriki of the 3-tailed demon turtle?”

“Saizo-dono…”

“Yagura! Don’t hold back! You’ll die if you do.” Saizo turned and left the dank hospital room.

A faint knock on the door to the hokage’s office in the early afternoon hours alerted Minato to Fugaku’s presence. “Hokage-same,” said Fugaku as he entered the office. “There’s something I have wanted to talk to you about.”

“Fugaku-san? I was just thinking about you actually.” Fugaku stood in front of Minato’s desk, his hands behind his back. He admired it; the look, the smell, the feel. Minato stood up and pulled up a chair for Fugaku to sit in. “Have a seat. Relax. There’s no need to be so formal when it’s just you and me.” Fugaku sat down. Even the leather of the seat felt amazing. “You and I are in a difficult situation. Our wives have been dispatched on a mission together. Our very pregnant wives. It’s hard for me to sit here knowing that she may be in danger.”

Appealing to the hokage’s request for informality, Fugaku asked, “Minato-san? What do we do if someone did attack and eliminate the Uzumaki Clan?”

Minato paused for a brief moment to think. “I don’t know. You and I have seen a lot of death. We’ve killed a lot of people. We’ve lost a lot of friends… family, even. Do you want to continue the bloodshed that we fought so hard to stop?”

Fugaku rested his chin in his hand, his index finger slightly stroking the side of his nose. “Our children would be dragged into a war they don’t even comprehend. Itachi is strong. If he were to go to war, i have no doubts he’d survive. But my child would no longer exist. He’s a sweet boy.”

“We can’t go to war, Fugaku. Can I count on you and the Konoha Police Force to investigate this, if it is, indeed, foul play?”

As a father, Fugaku understood too well what war would do to his son. He wanted Itachi to be an amazing shinobi. War would destroy his son. He knew that simply from the events of taking him to the battlefield just a few months ago. “I’ll personally see to it that our children see a brighter tomorrow.” The two stood up and shook hands.

As Fugaku left the room, Minato called out to him. “You should bring your son over for dinner while the ladies are on their mission. Kakashi-kun is an amazing chef.”

Fugaku nodded and left the office. “Minato is a lot like me,” he thought. “I can feel his Will of Fire imposing itself on me. This is why Sandaime-sama chose him. He will make a great Hokage.”

Inside the Hokage’s office, HIruzen walked out from one of the shadows in the corner. “That went surprisingly well.”

Minato slouched in his chair. “He’s really intense. I thought that would’ve gone so many different ways, hahaha.”

“Tobirama-sensei didn’t trust the Uchiha much,” explained Hiruzen. “He respected their skill and grew to love them. But his past with them never allowed him to trust them. Hashirama-sensei was the opposite. He saw the good in their hearts. He wanted to appeal to that side of them. You, Minato-kun, are like Hashirama-sensei. I want you to appeal to Fugaku-san. He’s a good man. He can be trusted.”

“Thank you, Sandaime-sama.”

Uzushio, the land where Kushina Uzumaki was born, was in ruins. It was an ungodly sight. Once white, marble streets were now dyed copper with dried blood and littered with corpses, young and old. Once clean walls with Uzumaki Clan murals were now plastered with the graffiti of the massacre that occurred. Kushina was frozen in her tracks. She couldn’t move, not that she even wanted to.

There was a scream in her chest that could not be heard. Obito grabbed her hand. “We need you, onee-sama.” She took a step forward. Then, another. Shikaku and Mikoto had already gone forward to gather intel.

The evidence scattered was almost as horrific as the scene itself. Most of the residents were murdered in their sleep. How else could a Clan this strong be annihilated in one shot? Families killed in their beds. Children still clutching their stuffed animals or blankets.

As MIkoto searched the island with her sharingan, she noticed seals hidden in houses that seemed to be evacuated. Mikoto wasn’t adept at seals. Not like Kushina was. She found these seals all over the island. “Kushina-chan! Are you okay? I need your assistance.”

Kushina could feel the seal. It wasn’t exceptionally powerful but it was intricate. It was a seal taught to the Uzumaki children at a young age. It was a distress beacon. Taught to children if they were to get lost or taken. This seal was very specific to the Uzumaki Clan and resonated with Clan members.

She placed her hand on the seal to release it. It was a message with only two words, “Kitsune Clan.” More seals had the same kinds of messages: “Mamoru Clan,” “Ito clan,” “Sato Clan,” “Hayashi Clan,” “Ishikawa Clan,” “Ota Clan.” The list of Clans kept going as they found more seals. All of these clans banded together the take out the Uzumaki Clan.

All was not lost, however. There were survivors. Some people were able to escape through hidden escape paths on the island. This gave Kushina a bit of solace. Though she didn’t know where they went, she was happy that they were able to escape.

After hours of walking the island and searching through atrocity after atrocity, Shikaku surmised that they had gathered enough information to take back to Konoha. Kushina, however, was still shaken. She wanted to give the dead a proper burial.

MIkoto empathized with Kushina and offered a solution. Minato was the new Hokage. He could send a platoon of earth users to gather the dead and give them the memorial they deserve. Tears still streaming, Kushina reluctantly accepted.

Before navigating the torrent that separated Uzushio from the mainland, Kushina and Obito had a moment of silence for their comrades. He continued to hold her hand. He knew what it was like to mourn in silence more than anyone.

After young Itachi left the academy, he met up with Shisui and Izumi to train on the riverbank near the Uchiha compound. Itachi had already suffered embarrassment in class dealing with Anko and her antics. Now, Itachi and Izumi were pitted against Shisui for combat training and Itachi couldn’t focus.

His frustration was displayed in his lack of teamwork with Izumi and how easily he was being bested by Shisui. Shisui was not going to take it easy on Itachi just because he was young. He wanted to push Itachi to be the best and tap into his full potential. Izumi was progressing rather well for a girl who hadn’t awakened her sharingan yet. Her taijutsu was amazing for her age, even without the sharingan.

She tried to compensate for her partner, but his lack of focus made it difficult for her to pick up the slack.

Shisui stopped their sparring match. “Itachi! What’s going on with you?”

Itachi put his head down in shame. He felt bad that Shisui was disappointed in him. “He had a rough day with Anko-senpai picking on him constantly.”

“Anko, huh,” laughed Shisui. “She’s a spitfire, isn’t she?” Itachi blushed. Izumi clenched her fists seeing him blush. Shisui walked over to them and knelt in front of Itachi. “Look. You can’t let her get to you. She’s teaching you something important… how to control your emotions. If you come in contact with an enemy that can manipulate your emotions and make you act out of character, you have be be strong enough to overcome it and keep your wits about you. Do you understand?”

Itachi nodded.

Izumi chimed in, “she says things and makes his nose bleed or his sharingan activate.”

“Do you want me to talk to her, Itachi-kun?”

Itachi shook his head. “This is my fight. I have to win on my own, nii-san.”

Shisui poked Itachi on his forehead and stood up. “Then let’s get back to work, Itachi-kun.”

Onee-sama (oh-n-eh)- this is a very respectful way to address an older sibling or a sibling of royal birth and higher status.

Black Zetsu emerged from the shadows behind the girls, leaving the white Zetsu to watch. As he took form in the shadows of the woods Aiko activated her sharingan as one of the traps Kaede set went off.

“Show yourself,” called Kaede. The pitch black, shadowy figure walked out from the bushes. “Why are you here?”

A menacing smile appeared on the dark figure’s face. “That girl there… has beautiful eyes” he said looking directly at Aiko. The light from the moon reflecting off of Aiko’s eyes made the blue seem even more radiant. “I’m here to give you a gift. An Uchiha family secret.”

Both girls stood confused.

Suddenly, his gaze became even more sinister and he attacked them. The difference in power was clear, even after gaining the 3rd tomoe in her sharingan. She could see his movements but her body was was too slow to react.

He grabbed Kaede by the face and slammed her to the ground in the blink of an eye. She laid unconscious next to the campfire. He, then, moved to Aiko. She tried to attack, but to no avail.

Her fleury of attacks were dodged and parried with ease. She attempted to use a jutsu, but he caught her hand before she could finish. He punched her in the stomach before flinging her into a nearby tree. As her body hit the tree, he was already upon her delivering another big body blow, this time cracking her ribs.

Still, the fight hadn’t left her. She stood up to attack the mysterious black figure again. She dashed toward him again, letting loose a barrage of punches. He caught her wrist as she tried to connect with a spinning backfist. The sound of her bones snapping in her right arm alerted her of the true pain she was in.

Black Zetsu started heading toward Kaede. Aiko used her good arm to stand. If she couldn’t punch him, she’d kick. She used the tree to springboard her toward the enemy. He dodged her kick as it came crashing to the ground. Before she could react, pain shot through her body again. The sound was like a bear stepping on a bed of twigs. Her right leg was the bed of twigs and his foot was the bear.

He grabbed her by her throat and held her limp body in front of him. “I know what you're thinking and I'm not going to kill you,” said Zetsu. “But her on the other hand? She has got to go.” Tears welled in Aiko's eyes. “I can tell she's your friend. You love her. Like a sister. That’s why you fought so hard. But she's holding you back. You'd be so much stronger without her. Her death… will bring you new life.”

He let Aiko go and she fell listlessly to the ground, writhing in agony. Zetsu stood over Kaede for what seemed to be hours as she slowly regained consciousness. Aiko wanted to run, but the pain wouldn’t allow it. She wanted to say something to Kaede, but couldn’t find the words. All she could find was fear.

Kaede reached out to her friend for help, but there was nothing Aiko could do. “Aiko-chin…” she mumbled. Zetsu looked at Aiko, then back down to Kaede. His hands performed a single hand seal: rat. Aiko could feel the ground shift beneath her and watched as the earth shifted around Kaede. Doton: Ganban Kyū.

Aiko could hear her friend scream in agony and was forced to listen until her cries died out. Blood began to pour from the seams of her stone coffin. In that moment, her eyes changed. She was given the same gift as Obito: the Mangekyou Sharingan. Hers was in the shape of a beautiful four-leaf clover.

“Magnificent,” said Zetsu as he knelt down and looked into her tearful eyes. “Finally, the beauty of hatred is in your eyes.” he grabbed her by her hair, slightly lifting her from the ground. “If you wish to kill me for the gift I’ve given you, get strong and come after me.” He slammed her back down, knocking her out so that the white Zetsu could take her to their hideout.

Zabuza, Kisame and Yagura had battled the 3-tailed demon turtle throughout the day. The sun had set on their battle, yet the battle raged on. Yagura had proven highly effective in defensive ability to keep the beast at bay. Kisame and Zabuza were just enough to match its power. The 2 jonin were considered monsters in Kirigakure, each able to take on a platoon of shinobi by themselves.

Their attacks whittled the monster down enough for the sealing unit to make their entrance into the battlefield. 14 hours of intense battle. Zabuza and Kisame were each running low on chakra. Since Yagura was mainly defense and his technique did not use much chakra, he was in the best shape of the three. He thought it was time he took the offensive for the last leg of the battle.

“Zabuza-sempai! Kisame-kun! Take a break. I will take it from here.” He took the large pole off of his back. I was hooked on one end and slightly resembled a fish hook. On the hooked end, there was a single flower. He leapt high into the air toward the demon turtle, crashing his weapon onto its shell. The shockwave from the force felt like an explosion from a jutsu of kage level.

The blow rocked the demon turtle. Kisame and Zabuza finally realized why such a small framed ninja was chosen to be the host of the tailed beast. He was the real beast in the fight. His power rivaled, if not exceeded, the Mizukage. It was in that moment, that one attack, that they knew Yagura was the strongest shinobi in Kirigakure.

After the debris and water settled from Yagura’s attack, he could be seen fending off the demon beast in one-on-one combat. Zabuza attempted to step in, but was stopped by Kisame. “Sempai? Do you see that look in his eyes?”

“I do. It’s the look I had when I graduated the academy. It’s the look of a demon.”

KIsame swallowed his pride, “If we try help, he’ll annihilate us in the crossfire.”

Zabuza nodded. “This is his battle from here on. Maybe we should get something to eat and enjoy the show.”

March 1

It was a beautiful morning in konoha. The city was in a bustle with final preparations for Minato’s coronation ceremony. The village was having a festival in his honor. Balloons line the streets, confetti was strewn about, children were at play. The smell of pastries filled the air.

Minato sat behind what was about to be his new desk, imagining the thoughts and feelings of his predecessors. He ran his fingers over the rich cedar desk, feeling each groove and scar in it. It still had the thick scent of the forest as if it were just carved. He could also smell Hiruzen’s pipe smoke. He looked at the pictures on the wall, paying close attention to the spot where his will be. He still needed to elect an advisor. Hiruzen offered to be his advisor until he found a viable replacement.

There was a light knock on the door. As it swung open, he saw his wife. The gentle breeze from the window behind him caught a tuft of her fiery red hair. She smiled bashfully as she walked into the room. She was holding something white in her arms.

“It’s almost time, Minato-kun, -ttebane.” The sight of her husband behind that desk filled her with pride. His dreams had been made reality, just like her grandfather before him. “Are you nervous?”

“No… a little… yes. I don’t have a speech. What am I gonna say to the people of Konoha to make them like me?”

Kushina walked over to Minato. She put her hand on his shoulder. As he looked up, he could see the pride in her. The sunlight beaming through the window made her skin glow. “Speak from the heart, my love. The village will feel your Will of Fire and accept you.”

He placed a hand on her belly and smiled. “I hope so. For his sake.”

She took a step back and handed him the folded cloth in her arms. He unfolded it. His hokage robe unfurled, adorned with the flame that he requested along the bottom and the kanji “Fourth Hokage” (四代目火影) down the back. “It’s time, Minato-ttebane.”

The crowd was gathering in front of the Hokage’s office. Atop a building sat Jiraiya with a bottle of Konoha’s finest Daiginjo-shu sake. Tsunade was the shortly after. They were both dressed in their most formal attire to commemorate Minato’s coronation.

“It’s a great time for Konoha now that the war is over,” she said softly.

“Yeah,” replied Jiraiya. “It’s an even better time to have a drink with a friend.” He handed her a cup of sake and they toasted before sipping it down. “I wish Orochimaru was here, too. It would be good to have the team together again.”

Tsunade sipped silently. She had something heavy on her chest and Jiraiya could tell. As they sat on the roof of the building overlooking the crowd, he nudged her shoulder. When she looked over to him, he flashed a big smile. “So is this finally our first date, after all these years?”

She raised her hand to punch him before realizing he only said that to cut the tension. “Thank you, Jiraiya.” There was a brief silence again. She looked out at the crowd. She saw the smiles on the faces of the citizens. She felt the peace she had fought for for so long. She was finally at ease with her decision. “I’m leaving Konoha and I am taking Shizune with me. I’m tired of war, of the bloodshed. I feel that Konoha will be dragged into another war and I don’t want her involved. She’s just a child… just younger than Nawaki would be.”

“I understand. Won’t you at least stay to see Kushina have her child?”

She poured another cup of sake and shook her head. “I can’t. Not knowing that her son’s fate is to fight in another pointless war.”

“So they’re having a boy? Congrats, Minato.”

“Don’t tell them. Let them be surprised.” Jiraiya nodded at her request. “I’ll be going after the ceremony.” She stood up to go about her business.

Jiraiya took a big gulp of sake. “Hey, Princess. Take care of yourself, okay.”

“You, too, Jiraiya.”

“One more thing…” His tone and demeanor changed drastically. “If you do anything to betray Konoha… I will kill you.”

She smiled. “That is the promise we made all those years ago, isn’t it. Goodbye Jiraiya.”

The time had come. Hiruzen was finally about to pass on his Will of Fire to Minato. He walked out to the terrace of the Hokage office, overlooking the crowd. He stood in his robe and Hokage hat as the wind blew.

Hiruzen announced, “Today I pass the reigns of Hokage to a shinobi who has exemplified what it means to be a leader. His efforts in the war directly brought about the peace we are in at this very moment. There were many candidates to choose from. Shikaku Nara for his strategic excellence. Fugaku Uchiha for his battle prowess on the front lines. Alas, I settled on one shinobi that, when asked, did not think to offer his own name as a candidate. In showing such selfishness coupled with the recommendation from a trusted a trusted ally and his ability to show the same diplomatic resolve that he had on the battlefield. I’d like to introduce the 4th Hokage, Minato Namikaze.”

Minato walked out to greet the crowd. His robe flowing for all to see. He walked to the rail and placed his hands on the rail. He looked to his right and nodded to Hiruzen.

Minato called to the crown, “a single leaf can do nothing but blow in the wind. But a tree? A tree is mighty. A tree is the foundation upon which the leaves because the leaves are its family. Konoha is a family. Each clan is a branch on the tree. The Hokage is the trunk that protects each branch and all of its leaves. I will protect you all because without you, there is no reason for me to be. You are konoha. I am konoha! WE ARE KONOHA!” He bowed.

The crowd burst into cheers and applause.

The crowd roared with cheers and applause, but one man’s clap lacked enthusiasm. Fugaku was not thrilled about being passed over for Hokage.  He felt his contribution to the war was just as significant as Minato’s if not greater. However, he trusted the 3rd Hokage completely.

If the Hokage chose Minato, he will accept him as the next Hokage. He didn’t have to like the choice though. He only needed to respect it.

The seal that keeps the 9-tails in will be at its weakest when she’s in labor. We need to keep her safe.”

“Understood, Yondaime-sama,” said Kakashi.

Minato looked at Obito who had his hands on his head. “Obito?”

“Understood… Hokage-sama.” Obito had a question burning at the tip of his tongue. He had been working hard since his return and wanted to be acknowledged. “Can I be in ANBU with Kakashi-niisan?”

Minato sat back in his chair. He could see the determination in Obito. “If you complete this mission, I will make you an ANBU Op and have you report to Kakashi. Deal?”

Obito could not contain his excitement. He screams of joy could be heard down the hallways of the Hokage Building.

Aiko started to regain her consciousness. She was in a shabby bed in a dark, prison-like room. The air was humid though she couldn’t hear any water. It smelled like the banks of the river that ran through Konoha, but it felt a thousand miles away.

She kept her eyes closed in the event that her captors were nearby. She did not want to be detected if they were going to torture her any further. She could hear the pitter patter of someone’s feet near her. She could feel the person watching her. It felt like daggers piercing into her soul.

Then, the painful realization that her arm and leg were broken reminded her of the danger she was in. she tried to keep her facial expressions in check, but she couldn’t help but wince at the pain shooting throughout her body.

“Ahhh,” called out a deep, raspy voice. “You are finally conscious. You’ve been out for a while.”

Aiko opened her eyes to see an old man with long, spiky, stark white hair. He was covered in wrinkles and had some sort of tube connected to the back of his head. His eyes looked sunken and dark like he’d seen more sorrow than anyone else she’d ever known… like he’d lost everything dear to him. “Who are you,” she asked softly.

“Just an old man past his prime.” Madara was careful how he’d use his words this time. He didn’t want to lose another pawn. “What is your name, child?” He knew. He had been watching her for a while, gauging her potential.

“Aiko…” she whispered. “My name is Aiko. and what about you, ‘old man.’”

“I’m just a ghost of the Uchiha. Call me…” he tried to think of something cool and witty, but that was Hashirama’s forte. He was the funny one. “Call me Grandpa Uchiha.”

Aiko seemed weary of her “savior.” An Uchiha that she doesn’t know about. “How do I know you’re really an Uchiha?” She needed to choose her words wisely. She didn’t want to give away her identity so soon. “Don’t the Uchiha possess one to the 3 Great Dojutsu?”

Madara’s eye flashed red as he activated 3 tomoe in his sharingan. The power he exuded was immense. It was like an intense pressure on her entire body. Then, as suddenly as it came, it went. His eyes went back to the solemn black that they were before and the despair returned to his eyes. She had never felt a power like that except when Kushina unleashed the power of the 9-tails. This chakra was only told in fairy tales and bedtime stories.

“So, girl. Do you believe me now?” Aiko nodded. “Do you have a last name?”

“I am Aiko Uchiha.” she activated her sharingan.

“I’ve heard of you,” he said. “They call you the ‘Blue Eyed Devil,’ don’t they?” Aiko looked away, embarrassed. “Tell me… how did you receive such a beautiful sharingan?”

“I’m only half Uchiha. My father. My mother was born from a small clan: the Iga clan. You’re old. You know the Iga history. We are a branch family of the Uchiha with very few being able to awaken their sharingan. My mother wasn’t even full Iga. so that’s how i got these eyes. By being a mutt that belongs in s kennel. I don’t belong to any one clan.”

Madara smiled. “That’s ok, child. The Uchiha blood in your veins is strong. And your eyes… your eyes are beautiful.”

Aiko looked at the old man in his seat. “Tell me, old man. Who were you before you were the ghost of the Uchiha? When you the ghost had a body and a name?”

His head hung low as he broke eye contact with her. “Madara…” he sighed. “My name was Madara Uchiha.”

The clash between Yagura and the demon turtle was finally over. The team had successfully sealed the monster into Yagura, solidifying him as the next MIzukage when the 3rd stepped down. He laid unconscious on the muddy forest ground. Deep in the subconscious of the new jinchuuriki, Yagura met with the creature.

The two were in a giant, empty room filled with water to Yagura’s knees. The beast’s legs and tails were shackled down and it was behind bars. There was a dim light from a candle between them.

“Bijuu-dono? I truly am sorry for this series of events, but we need you. We need your power for our village to prosper. Please understand.”

“You are no better than the other humans. You just want to use me as a weapon to destroy. Leave me alone.”

“Bijuu-dono. I will only use your power to protect me village. Let’s work together to achieve this goal?” Yagura walked up to the bars as closely as he could and sat in front of the monster. “Tell me, Bijuu-dono… what is your name?”

“Isobu. No one has asked my name in almost 100 years.”

“Then we will start with names and removing your shackles. I want us to be partners. You are not a tool. But we need to trust one another. I am called Yagura Karatachi.” Yagura held up his hand and the chains holding Isobu down faded into nothingness, releasing him. “A sign of good faith.”

Isobu slowly retreated to his shell. “Let me rest.”

“Then I will wait here until you are ready, Isobu-dono.” Yagura sat with a smile on his face and clasped his hands in his lap.

Mikoto was home with Itachi, getting ready for her mission to Uzushiogakure. Her jonin flak jacket no longer fit due to her pregnancy. As she sat with her son debating on what to wear on her mission, Fugaku walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her belly, gently kissing her on the neck. As his hands rubbed her stomach, he felt the baby kick. He smiled.

This was a different side of Fugaku than the rest of the village got to see. He wasn’t “Wicked Eye Fugaku” was as soft as cotton with his wife and son.

She pulled out another jacket. It was vastly different from her Konoha jacket. It was tan and only covered her chest. It had one strap that went over her right shoulder with a small Uchiha Clan crest over her right breast.

“Wife? Are you nervous?”

“There’s no reason to be nervous. It is a recon mission, husband.”

“Aren’t you worried about the baby?”

Itachi chimed in, “there’s no need to worry. My baby brother or sister will be the strongest Uchiha ever. He’ll protect you, mommy.”

In that moment, Fugaku thought of a name if he was to have another son. Sasuke. Named after one of the strongest ninja in history. Said to even be a match for Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha: Sasuke Sarutobi. He was also the father of the 3rd Hokage. “My love? What so you think of the name Sasuke if we have another son?”

“Like ‘Sarutobi?’”

Itachi loved the name. He put his hands over his father’s on his mother’s stomach and whispered, “Sasuke-kun. I will protect until you can protect yourself.”

Fugaku grabbed his Konoha Police jacket and headed out of their home. It was a bit early for him to be leaving but he needed to make a stop before going to work.

Mikoto knelt down in front if Itachi. She kissed him on his forehead and grabbed her things to leave after Fugaku. “Please be safe. Eat your vegetables while I am gone and be sure to mind your manners.” Itachi nodded and waved his mother out of the door. “I’ll be home in a few days,” she yelled as the door closed behind her.

On the other side of the village, Kushina was also getting ready for the mission. Obito was helping get things in order. This was his first official mission with Minato as the Hokage. He wanted it to be be perfect. He pulled out the gifts given to him from Minato and Kushina. It was time to put them to good use. This would be the first time he wore the green flak jacket that most other chunin and jonin wear.

He put the bracer given to him by Kushina on his left hand so that he could summon weapons with his right hand. He looked over at Kushina who was wearing her flak jacket and tying her long red hair into a ponytail.

Looking at her made him realize how much he missed Rin. he tried not to think about her. But, the more he tried to keep his mind occupied, the more he thought about her.

Kushina could see Obito’s eyes drifting off into space. She knew what he was thinking. She always knew. She missed Rin, too. She walked over and wrapped her arms around him. No words. Just a comforting hug to calm his soul.

It was time for the team to set off. They met at the front gate to leave Konoha for Uzushio to see what happened to the rest of the Uzumaki Clan.

Shikaku was annoyed that Obito was late. But he had to make a stop at Rin’s grave for motivation. Kushina knew, but it was not her secret to tell. After a brief scolding from Shikaku, the team set off.

Fugaku finally made it to the Sarutobi home to speak with Hiruzen. He had a few things he needed to speak with the Hokage about.

“Ahhh. Fugaku-san? What brings you here,” asked Hiruzen as he opened the door to see Fugaku standing there.

“I have something I need to ask you, Hokage-sama.”

Hiruzen invited him into the house. Asuma could be heard upstairs in his room. The 2 men sat at the dining room table. Biwako, Hiruzen’s wife, had just made some herbal tea, and poured them both a cup.  “What is it that you wanted to talk about? Is it about the Hokage position?”

Fugaku hadn’t considered asking him directly about his choice in the younger Minato. He knew he was strong enough to rival if not beat him in battle. Fugaku’s contribution to the war effort was just as pivotal to Konoha’s success. “That’s not why I came here Sarutobi-sama. But now that you mention it, why did you pick Minato-san over the other candidates?”

Hiruzen sipped his tea. After he sat the cup down, he stroked his graying beard. “In regards to you, it wasn’t a simple decision. You are strong, smart and charismatic. However, I feel that you are better suited to inspire the people on a personal level. You are a lot like Tobirama-sama in that regard and I wish for you to support Minato in the same way that you have supported me over the years.”

Fugaku heard the sincerity in his voice. He was not passed over for Hokage. Still, he felt just a bit jealous. He wanted to be the first Uchiha Hokage since the founding of the village… founded by the Uchiha clan. Though he was jealous, he was still happy that Hiruzen thought so highly of him that he compared him to Tobirama.

“Thank you, Sandaime-sama. That means a lot to me. The real reason I am here is to ask you permission on a rather important matter.” Hiruzen raised an eyebrow in intrigue. “Your father was known as one of the strongest shinobi in history. I was raised on the stories of his battle prowess. May I name my child, if it is a boy, Sasuke? After your father?”

Hiruzen’s chest filled with pride. “It would do me and my family great honor if you named your child after my father.”

“Thank you, Sandaime-sama.”

February 27

Obito…”

Kushina interrupted, “Sandaime-sama!? Why is Shikaku-san in charge? It’s my clan we’re investigating, -ttebane!”

“Given the situation, you are here to navigate the village. It was once your home. You may be able to locate hidden safe houses. Obito. You and Kushina work well together. Finally, Mikoto. You've proven very adept at medical jutsu. This rounds out the 4-man cell. Understood?”

In unison they all said, “understood, Sandaime-sama.”

Hiruzen added, “Furthermore, this is reconnaissance only. Kushina and Mikoto are not to engage in battle under any circumstance. Find answers and come home.” Hiruzen looked directly at Kushina who had a reputation of losing her temper. “Come home.”

Kushina frowned and crossed her arms as if she were pouting. She knew he was only looking out for her and the baby. “Yes, Hokage-sama,” she sighed.

Shikaku sighed, “What a drag. 2 pregnant women on a mission. Hokage-sama? If I may?” Hiruzen nodded. “With this being recon, we shouldn’t run into trouble. In the event that we do, I say that Mikoto and Kushina partner up. I’ve seen her on the battlefield. She doesn’t need to put her body in harm’s way to fight.”

Hiruzen trusted the Nara’s intellect. In the past, they have been very astute in battle tactics. Hiruzen agreed to the suggestion and dismissed them. Their mission was to start the day after the inauguration, so Kushina could support her husband.

In the hall outside of the hokage’s office, Kushina asked Shikaku how he knew that the 2 women were pregnant. “It’s obvious. She’s showing,” he said pointing at Mikoto, “and you’re the jinchuuriki. Why else would the Hokage bench you?”

Both of the young women grabbed him and said, “Please don’t tell anyone.”

Shikaku sighed and dropped his head. “Women are so annoying. Fine… fine. Your secret is safe with me.”

Deep in the Land of Waves, the team led by Zabuza comes across a swamp not shown on their map. They knew something was wrong. Kisame immediately drew his katana. “Show yourself, beast!”

An eerie voice surrounded them. “You call me a beast, yet you’re here to attack and capture me? I say you’re the real monsters here.” The 3-tailed beast, a demon turtle, slowly rose from the murky water with muddy moss and vines covering his shell.

Zabuza walked over to Kisame and Yagura. “Kisame and I will take it head on. Yagura, you will attack from a distance and be our defense. Use that counter-attack whenever you can.” He drew Kubikiribōchō. He called over his shoulder, “The rest of you! Get back. This isn’t going to be pretty. If you die, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“You wanna see a monster, demon!” yelled Kisame. “I’ll show you a monster!” His killer intent filled the air, matched by Yagura and Zabuza. Kisame threw his sword in the air and started his hand signs. Suiton: Suiryūdan no Jutsu. From the water formed a giant water dragon and coiled around Kisame. It let out a loud roar just before attacking the giant turtle.

Zabuza used his Kirigakure no Jutsu. His mist completely enveloped the area allowing him to be completely undetectable.

The water dragon crashed into the demon turtle, knocking it back. The demon slammed its 3 tails into the water. “Leave me alone,” it shouted.

“We can’t do that,” retorted Yagura. “We need your strength to aid our village.”

“You mean to use me as a weapon! I refuse to be a part of your petty human squabbles! Not anymore!”

“Shut yer whining,” yelled Kisame. “Get down or lay down.”

“I’m sorry, Bijuu-dono. We can’t let you go,” sighed Yagura.

As Mikoto walked in the door, she was greeted by her son, Itachi, running down the stairs and jumping into her arms. She loved how affectionate he was. Fugaku was in the kitchen making breakfast. Itachi left her and ran to his father.

Oto-san! Oto-san! I have something I want to show you!”

Fugaku looked down at his son. He could see the excitement in his eyes. Itachi had been training with Shisui for almost a month and wanted to show his father the fruit of his labor.

Itachi pulled his father by his hand eagerly to the pond behind their house. Fugaku stopped as Itachi’s tiny fingers let go of his hand. “Stand right there, Oto-san.” Itachi walked on to the small wooden dock. Snake. Ram. Monkey. Boar. Horse. Tiger. He took a deep breath. “This is it,” he thought. Time to impress father. Goukakyuu no jutsu!” As he exhaled, what was once a tiny flame erupted into a fireball as big as Itachi himself.

Fugaku swelled with pride, but he didn’t let it show on his face. His son was leaps and bounds ahead of where he should be. This 5-year-old boy was showing signs of genius that had not been seen in generations of the Uchiha clan.

The flame stopped and Itachi turned around with a big smile on his face. “Oto-san! Did you see? Did I do well?”

Fugaku stood emotionless. Itachi’s smile faded and he hung his head low, looking at the ground in front of him. He felt his father’s enormous hand on his head. It was warm. Warmer than usual. Though he spoke softly, the words boomed in Itachi’s ears. “As expected of my son.”

Itachi looked up at his father with tears of joy streaming down his face. Fugaku’s face had not changed, but somehow looked very different to Itachi. He saw his father’s pride. He did it.

The morning sun kissed the dark granite stone in the cemetery. Lilies were being placed in front of the gravestone. A husky figure stood up from the grave, wiping his eyes.

“So this is why the shop doesn’t open until 11:00a.m.?” asked a familiar voice.

The man turned around. He was wearing a tan trench coat and long, dark pants. The collar was flipped up, slightly obscuring his face. He was mourning his late wife and mother of his daughter. “You say that every single time, Minato. You’re still so predictable.” The 2 men hugged.

“She was the best part of our team when we were young,” said Minato.

The man nodded. “That she was. What brings you here, kid? You haven’t come to visit in a long time.”

Minato answered, “Since before the war.” he paused. There was a gentle breeze between them. “I need your help.”

“My help? With what?”

“I’m the next Hokage. I want you to be my advisor. Please.”

The man sighed and crossed his arms. His mind was racing. “I can’t. I left that world behind when she was taken from me. Besides… a genius kid like you doesn’t need my advice.”

“I trust you. We were teammates. Once upon a time.”

He turned to walk away. “You can always count on me, but our team died a long time ago, Minato. If you want advice, buy a bowl of ramen. I’m done being ninja.” He walked off, leaving Minato standing at the grave.

“See you… Teuchi.”

Later that day, Obito and Kakashi went to the cemetery, as they always did before training, to have lunch with Rin. They sat around her grave and Kakashi barely touched his bento box. Something had been troubling Kakashi since Obito lost to Hizashi. “Nii-san,” he whispered. “What happened last week?”

“What do you mean, Kakashi?”

“I mean why did you lose? Hizashi can’t beat me in a fight, so how can he beat you?”

Obito laughed. “I can’t beat you in a fight, either.” Obito punched Kakashi in the shoulder. Still laughing.

“Obito,” commanded Kakashi. His voice was stern. This was a serious matter to him.

“Okay… okay. Hizashi clearly had a few tricks up his sleeve that even Hiashi wasn’t aware of. Whatever he used to block my chakra was really advanced. To be honest, I was outclassed from the beginning. He used his trump card once the fight began. I don’t know if he did it out of fear of losing or out of respect for the sharingan. Either way, he won.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“Yeah. I’ll beat him next time. I know his secret now. Besides… I have a secret of my own.” Obito activated his mangekyou sharingan to show Kakashi.

Kakashi’s single visible eye widened. “Your eyes. Why are they like that?”

“It happened the night Rin died. It’s called the mangekyou sharingan. I was told stories about it when i was a kid, but I never thought I’d have them. I’m guessing you do, too.”

“What makes you think that, Obito?”

“We both saw Rin die. Someone we love. If my left eye can use it and it was made from the eyes that I gave you, then i’m sure you can use it, too.”

Kakashi was really curious as to what this ability would do for him. “Why didn’t I notice this before?”

“The strain is probably the reason why you passed out. You aren’t an Uchiha so it takes a lot more chakra from you.”

“I guess that makes sense. Even more importantly, why didn’t you use it last week in the fight?”

Obito laughed again. “I wanted to see if I could win without it.”

The sun was high overhead with very few clouds in the sky. “You’re such a loser,” kakashi chuckled as he ate.

February 28

Aiko, Hizashi and Kaede were deep in the forests of their home country heading to a small village on the outskirts that requested help from Konoha. There was a group of bandits terrorizing the people, extorting them for the few resources they have. Hiruzen had a good relationship with the village elders so he opted to do this as a favor to them.

The village was close. They could hear children at play in the distance. Those screams of joy quickly turned to screams of horror. The bandits were attacking earlier than the intel dictated. Doutou, their jonin squad leader, told them to hurry to protect as many villagers as possible.

Hizashi activated his byakugan and Aiko, her blue sharingan. Kaede got her traps and kunai read. The mission was to apprehend every member of the bandit gang with as little loss of life as possible. Kaede was the last member of the team to make chunin rank, so this should be a walk in the park if there aren’t any rogue shinobi in the group.

As the team arrived, they could see that panic had spread like the fires that were currently engulfing the village. Doutou put Hizashi in charge of finding the elders, keeping them safe and finding out why this happened. Aiko and Kaede were charged with securing the safety of the villagers while Doutou would search for and apprehend the leader.

The team split up to aid the villagers.

Off in the distance, overlooking the small village where Team Doutou was frantically trying to protect the villagers from the bandits. A keen eye was kept on Aiko in particular. This Zetsu was different from the one that bonded with Obito. One half was black and the other half was white.

“This was a good plan White. I guess you’re not as useless as i previously thought.. Should we take her now or after they finish their mission?”

“Thanks! We’ll wait ‘til after. We can at least let them finish the job we set up for them, Black.”

“This waiting is annoying. When you’re ready, call me. I’m going back to tell Madara that we will have his prize soon. Hurry up and get it done,” said the black half of Zetsu. “We don’t have much time until the 9-tails is ready. With it, this will be a lot easier.”

Uzushiogakure- Village Hidden by Whirlpools

Kubikiribōchō- Decapitating Carving Knife is a massive sword renowned as the "seversword"

Suiton: Suiryūdan no Jutsu- Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique shapes a large amount of water into a giant, powerful dragon, which hits the opponent with formidable might, dealing physical damage.

Kirigakure no Jutsu-  speciality of the shinobi from Kirigakure, where one causes a mist to spring forth either by using a pre-existing water source, or expelling it from their mouth. They can then go in and out of sight at will from within the pearly-white realm. The mist's thickness is controlled by the amount of chakra kneaded into it. It cannot fool the Byakugan, but, due to the mist being created with the user's chakra, any Sharingan and Rinnegan-user will see the mist coloured by their opponent's chakra — which will effectively hide the user from the dōjutsu.

Bijuu- the nine titanic living forms of chakra created by the Sage of Six Paths out of the chakra from the Ten-Tails. They are differentiated by the number of tails they have, ranging from one to nine.

Dono- an honorific added to names roughly meaning “lord” or “master”. It does not equate noble status; rather it is a term akin to "milord" or French "monseigneur", and lies below sama in level of respect.

Oto- a formal way of saying father in Japanese.
