Planet Ripple- 106- Tadpoles

Isn't that the cutest thing? No, it's not like Molno's legs are only half-developed in there or something. When Dolphin Merfolk come out of the womb, they just sort.... take part of it with them? And wear this lining like a cast for the first month or two of their life. Basically it trains them to hold their legs together when they swim, so they quickly learn how to do the "dolphin kick." I can imagine any sailors who saw them back in our time must've thought they were giant tadpoles or frog people.

Lil' guy's barely opened his eyes, but he knows when his mother is near and slides into her arm, sleeping almost instantly. Sigh...

You know, if these Merfolk couldn't "scream" predators away, these nurseries would probably be swarmed by sharks and the like. Again, this is why some other Merfolk types who don't have that ability tend to hide themselves a lot more.

Dolphin Merfolk "speech" doesn't just consist of humming. Body language and facial expressions are a part of it too. Some even like to use sign language.

Anyway, that's it for today.

Both a cute page and a sad page. Does Noma have a husband/mate btw? If so, where is he while the kids are looking after themselves?
NickOnPlanetRipple's avatar
He's nearby. The adults patrol the nursery.

Aww, so cute!

Do baby merfolk have duller scales so they don't attract as much attention from predators?
NickOnPlanetRipple's avatar
Yep. That was my mum's idea. She said if the babies had vibrant colors, they'd be targeted by predators. No scales, though. Just patches of freckles. Their skin is like that of a whale.

Ah.  Is there any reason it doesn't dry out?
NickOnPlanetRipple's avatar
It does after a while. Best they don't go too long without taking a dip in a pool, or a shower. Anything helps.

So they can be out of water for like, an hour or so?
