Martin the Warrior by nicholaskole Martin the Warrior by nicholaskole
"Pick a book you love, do three illustrations".
So, naturally, I delved into my bookshelves and plucked my well-worn copy of "Martin the Warrior: A Tale of Redwall" from it's repose. I LOVE Redwall. I have a particular passion for Martin the Warrior...since it was the first Redwall book (or high adventure/fantasy book) I ever picked up, and it's still the best in my opinion. I've always wanted to do something with this...to go back and pay homage to my memory with a set of illustrations...or, you know...be involved in designing the movie when someone gets wise. *cough*
Anyways, they're finally DONE! (for now)
From sketches to finishes, I've been working on these for about a month all told. This is the latest for my narrative Illustration course.
I had to illustrate three moments, so for those not in the know or those up for some reminiscing, here's some brief background:

1. "Martin Defiant": Martin defies Hisk in the courtyard of an unfinished Marshank, stopping him from whipping old Barkjon senseless for being unable to carry his load. (After which they hang Martin from two posts at the top of the wall in the pouring rain to be eaten by gulls, but I could only pick three :/)

2. "The Slaves Escape": Feldoh and the others lead the slaves out of the compound under cover of darkness, while Ballaw and the Rambling Roseship Players distract Badrang and Cap'n Clogg with an elaborate magic show and stage performance.

3. "Laterose of Noonvale": This scene had such an impact on me as a child. Martin leading his ragtag army against Badrang's horde, storming Marshank. In the middle of it all, Rose finds herself between Badrang and the way out and he hurls her against the wall, breaking her neck. In a rage, Martin kills Badrang and reclaims his father's sword, then turns to find that Rose is dead.
Probably the first time I wept over a book. Kind of silly in retrospect I guess, but still a big deal. But that passage in the book is still...y'know...heartbreakingly beautiful.

The tricky thing about these was that I had such an intense vision for what the whole thing looked like. I think/hope I did right by that. Also: this was my first foray into watercolor (with digital assist), so that was frustrating, but ultimately fun. At any rate, I hope y'all like them...I had fun.
I'll shut up now. :)

Characters etc are not mine. They're Brian's.

I just finished this book and the part where Laterose died had me in tears. First time a book ever had me weeping on the spot tbh. ;w;

Laterose of Noonvale. I remember that scene. Probably the first death I read about and it seriously crushed me when I was a kid. All I wanted was for martin to be happy and it made me miserable to find out rose was killed

this was my favorite book as a kid, too! Only, the scene I cried in was the one where Felldoh died...

This is some fantastic work and the charactrs are very well drawn!

This was the fourth Redwall book of Brian's that I ended up reading; I couldn't put it down. You did such a great job depicting these scenes; especially the latter one (definitely one of the most heartbreaking scenes in any of Brian's writings). Can't wait to see more of your work!

Nice to find another Redwall fan. The line "Rose, we could have chopped down the sycamore with this" is burned into my mind from that book. This is amazingly beautiful!

Even just looking at that last frame brings back all the emotion that Rose's death brought. I'll just go cry in a corner for a bit.

This is beautiful!  I finished the book today and I'm 23 years old and I cried so don't be ashamed haha... Love the series and I read a few of them when I was younger but now I've decided to go back and fill in the blanks by reading them all.  Wonderful artwork of three great scenes from this awesome adventure novel!

This has been my favorite book from the Redwall series ever since I read it back in my first year or so of high school (or sometime thereabouts). Your scenes are well chosen, in my opinion, and you've done a fine job of capturing the emotions in each of them. :) Beautiful work!

Wow. Much like you, the Redwall series was my first venture into High Fantasy, and Martin was really one of my heroes growing up. These illustrations are powerful... It's moving to see such fantastic writing depicted! I especially like the image of Martin crying over Rose. I definitely feel the same heartbreak that I felt reading about her death for the first time.

Oh you said it, I am stunned that no one has picked up the idea to create Redwall into a movie series, they have perfect scripts & many sequels that could be made. Hopefully they'll wise up soon :giggle: But honestly, these are all such gorgeous illustrations and I thought the scenes you chose were so dynamic and exciting, full of emotion and intensity. The most thrilling part are those gorgeous backdrops and lovely colors

After reading the description for each piece(which I appreciate, it was fun to remember this great story!) I really wish you had been able to draw Martin hanging from the posts, that image always stood out in my mind. I am very impressed by your hard work, attention to detail and overall astounding composition and use of multimedia to create such professional pieces of art. Thank you so much!

A little while back there was mention of one but I guess it fell through.

Let's hope a die-hard fan becomes a wealthy director and picks up the script :)

What an insight and a reminder! I remember wanting to read the books after seeing a few of the animated series episodes, and I'm definitely going to do that.

I really like each of the images you've done - the time you've taken to give them all the small details and then the description for each scene. I remember all 3 much better. A job well done!

I love Redwall~ >W< even back when I was 9 and there were too many fancy words for me to fully comprehend it~ Your art style is so different in here! I still love it very very much though! You should do more illustrations from other books! The ones you have done so far are so beautiful and breathtaking! ^^ I must admit I am quite a fan of your art :)

Like many people, it saddens me that Martin the Warrior never had a son or daughter, nor did her even fall in love again after Laterose died. I know Mr. Jacques has his reasons for what he writes, but here's what I feel should have happened.

In mossflower, Gonff has a sister named Lucy. Only she isn't present in the story because a 2 years before Martin and Gonff meet, she leaves on an adventure and hasn't returned, Therefore Gonff is now certain she is dead. Years later in "legend of luke". Lucy comes to Redwall hearing that her brother is there. Reuniting with tears and hugs, Gonff introduces her to his wife, his son, and martin. She goes with Martin and Gonff on their journey to find out about if Martin's father is Alive. As the story progresses, Martin gets to know Lucy, and starts to tell her how sad he feels, but cannot tell her why (remember how he promised never to tell anyone about rose), but at one point he does. In the end, Martin and Lucy get married and have a daughter named (don't know yet, you guys decide) being the cousin of Gonflett. And that's how I think it should have ended.

I love this! I know I'm a bad person, but Rose's death didn't make me cry. The deaths of Thyme and Clary did, though, not Pakatugg. I did feel a heavy sadness over Rose's and you have portrayed the feeling here so well.
