Caymus 'Muttski' Blacktail by NicGiraffe Caymus 'Muttski' Blacktail by NicGiraffe
Mobius Dawn is an AU/reboot of mine’s combining elements from several different Sonic continuities, namely SatAM, Sonic Underground, and the Archie comics along with some of my own ideas. A number of the canon characters I’m using for it have been altered so that they can better fit into my story-verse.

This is one of those characters, Muttski. Yes, the Hedgehog family dog. One thing I actually like about the Archie reboot is that this guy is a Mobian instead of just a regular dog, but I chose to take a different approach to him then the comic’s. He’s an archeologist (insert joke about dogs liking to dig up old junk here) and a friend of Sir Charles Hedgehog who becomes an ally to the Knothole Freedom Fighters. Since the KFFs seemed to either search for or run into a lot of mystical old doodads and such in SatAM quite a bit, I figure an archeologist would be a useful person for them to call on.

His career will bring him into contact with a variety of different characters and spur some interesting adventures for the good guys. He was named for his grandfather, but prefers going by his nickname, Muttski. Unlike many of the core good guys, Muttski's in his 30s. Although his appearance differs from his comic/SatAM selves, I’m keeping his classic cream and brown coloration. I’m still trying to figure out what his new personality could be like.

*Flails.* I was going to comment on this when you first put it up... then I didn't. But (although I don't remember Muttski in the show >< ) I do like your design for him. A lot. I approve of adult characters, and I have something of a fondness for archaeologists.

Thanks for the compliments! :D It's fine, stuff happens. Muttski appeared in "Heads Or Tails": sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Muttski_%… Sonic could definitely use grownups who aren't either evil or idiots.

Yeah, he's not in there for long, so I'm surprised he's the only thing I remember about watching the show back in the 90s. :P

What a cutie! I really love how you designed Muttski; he looks like a vivid yet curious adventurer, ready to go looking for the Lost Ark of the Covenant!....er, no wait, wrong adventurer. Oops. XD;

Kidding asides, I do love him. He looks to be a trustworthy explorer and friend to Chuck. I can see how his skills would come in handy for the Knothole Freedom Fighters. They need an expert who knows about mystical thingamijigs and doohickeys and who better than an archeologist? This is another reason why I love creating characters for shows; they can fill in gaps the shows haven't covered, and you did a fine job here, my friend. :)

I also like the idea of making him older than some of the main cast. I agree with Lilikoi; it's so refreshing to see someone who's older and has more experience than some of the members make it into the SatAM world. It can really add some world-building and/or room for different archetypes of characters than from what we usually see on the show. I'm sure that whatever personality you conjure up, it'll be a nice addition to the Freedom Fighters. I mean, for me, looking at Muttski, I can see him as a curious yet adventurous type who's not afraid to get his hands dirty. Literally!

Anywho, I really love this guy. Keep up the awesome work! :)

Thank you so much! I was kind of attempting to meld his older comic design with the ones from the SatAM concept art done for him. LOL. Well, you know, I was seriously thinking of giving him a fedora like Indy's... I was just too lazy to add it here. :-P

I totally wanted him to seem like a guy who Chuck would believably be buddies with. That, and I still wanted that connection to the Hedgehog clan there. Couldn't agree more about the fun of creating fan characters for our favorite things.

Most definitely. More variety in characters is always a good thing! I think having grownups being more visible in the Sonic world is more realistic as well. Your guess at what Muttski's personality is like is pretty close to what I've been devising for him. =D I think you really are psychic. XD

Once again, thank you for the great comment. :)

Oh, man, I can't believe you were thinking about giving him a fedora! And I was close as to what Muttski's personality is like..I think I really am psychic. I have POWAH!

Okay, joking asides, I think it's cute that you created a buddy that Chuck could have. Let's face it, Chuck needs some good friends to help him during trying times. Muttski sure can fill in that role with his curious yet sturdy personality, methinks! I think he could add a great connection to the Hedgehog clan. ^^

I agree. I mean, I can't really think of any other adults, other than Chuck at least, who could keep an eye on the Freedom Fighters as they go head to head against Robotnik. Somebody's gotta make sure them kids don't go into too much trouble! And it so does work to flesh out the Knothole gang and make it more believable. ^^

That said, you are so welcome! :)

Quick, tell me if I'm ever going to win the lottery! Yep, for real! XDI thought that kind of personality would suit a young archaeologist well.

Chuck really does deserve a buddy, I agree. Plus, LBR here -- as much as he loves Sonic and co, I'm sure he'd like to have somone other then  teenagers and kids to talk to every now and then. I look forward to writing about some good ol' Muttski/Hedgehog family interaction.

Well, there's Rosie. Oh and Lupe, but she can't be there all the time of curse. And the other adults who come to mind either wouldn't get along with the group or be well-received by them, or are well, evil, lol. Yep, you got that right! They're talented kids, but they can't do everything.

Um, uh, uh...drat. My powers are not working at the current time. Sorry, buddy; I can't tell you if you've won the lottery. ^^;

Oh totally. I mean, Chuck does need to talk to someone who's around his age whom he can relate to and to hang out with when he's not busy taking care of the kids. Guy's gotta have his own life too, Knothole! ><;
Oooh I'm looking forward to that interaction between the two! I'm sure it'll be awesomely heartwarming. ^^

Wow, what is it with kids and adults having tense relations? I guess that's what happens when you've got a maniac like Robotnik taking over the world ><; But yes, kids need adults to keep them in check and/or preventing them from doing incredibly stupid things. XD

This is an awesome pic! As usual, your art is fantastic. :D Honestly, it didn't really make sense he was just a normal dog. I think that's something literally everyone made fun of or was confused when they looked back on the Sonic series. Which is probably the main reason Archie changed that. You get one point, reboot. I love the idea of making him an archaeologist though! I do like how you can tie that into a dog's love of digging, too. He could be an honorary Pathfinder LOL. I can't wait to see the adventures he gets into.

I can also see how his career of choice would be helpful. I know they just had Sally/NICOLE handle that part, but it makes a lot more sense having someone who's actually studied that specifically. Man, is there anything they didn't just make Sally an expert in? What I can say I liked about SU, Sonia would kind of know things, but she still had to go to experts for details and help. Like in one episode she was like "This is an artifact! I remember learning about it at school. Let's take it to my professor who knows a lot more than I do." That seemed so much more realistic.

I also like seeing another older character around. We need some more adults around that don't just fade away into the background. That was one of the biggest problems with giving Papa Doc a love interest NEGL. Most of the adults around were either parents, bland or just wouldn't mesh. I think Elias was the closest I could think of that was around enough and not a teenager, but I was never sure about that one. But seriously, why is it all teenagers in charge of the Resistance? That doesn't even make sense.

You did a great job on his redesign and I love the changes you've made!

Pple made fun of Sonic for having a dog? The pple I saw seemed to act like it was normal. I'm surprised no one's thrown the "it's like us and chimps" as a way to rationalize feral!Muttski's existence. Except chimps still look like animals. They don't look like pple who live up in trees. Muttski looks like a Mobian dog, but can't talk and isn't bipedal. That's just bizarre to me, I'm sorry. And why weren't there anymore of these feral animals running around? Muttski doesn't seem to be doing anything in the reboot, and I don't want any character in my fic-verse being deadweight. They need to be contributing something. He could be a Pathfinder, I agree! Two ideas I had so far was him clashing with Rouge over some treasure and introducing the lost Chaos Emeralds into the picture.

BTW, there's some early concept art of Muttski at the Sonic wiki. It's surprising how diverse they got with his design. I actually like them better then what they went with for the show.

Delivering babies? I'd crack up if something like that occurred in the comics. XD Exactly! Yes, Sally would've been taught about history as part of her education, but she should not be super-knowledgable on something like that. Maybe NICOLE has Google or something, lol. I guess with her being a mythical animal I could swallow it in her case. But yeah, Sonia is the more realistic character. Dulcy kind of did that in "Blast To The Past".

Same. I remember your saying that before to explain Papa Doc's horse fetish. Cynically, I suspect it's because SEGA/Archie thinks adults are boring or something. I thought it'd be goofy to have Muttski as a 14-18 year old archeologist for a couple of reasons: namely it being a field that takes years and years of study to become knowledgeable enough to venture out into the field. I also can't see a teen archeologist being taking seriously. I know, that bugs me too! I wish the few adult characters that are around stopped treating it like it was perfectly normal or just be like, "Un... why are we listening to these kids?" every now and then. Especially in cases where their teenage stupidity caused problems. Questioning the leadership skills of high school age kids in such a case would be totally justified. I know I want to have Stormblaze and some other grownups react to it.

Thank you! I'm glad I could justify this guy's existence. :D

I saw a few people making jokes about it and asking "Wait, why is he a normal dog though...?" I saw a few people try to defend it with the us and chimps thing which... yeah. Chimps aren't just tiny humans. That would be bizarre and hilarious, but not how it actually is. I also saw a lot of people compare it to Mickey having Pluto which... actually, that's  good point. Why couldn't Pluto talk or anything?

And, I for one, am shocked the reboot is completely wasting the existence of his character LOL. And yeah, I try not to have deadweight around, too. How Papa Doc got through, I'll never know. Oohh burn. And you definitely succeeded in having him be a contributing member to the team!

Two ideas I had so far was him clashing with Rouge over some treasure and introducing the lost Chaos Emeralds into the picture.
I like both those ideas! It'd also give Rouge something to do. It might not be taking a long walk off a short pier like I suggested, but it'll do.

I'll have to go check those concepts out! I'm curious to see what they have. NGL It's way too common for the concept art to be cooler than what they end up going with in animated stuff in general.

I'm genuinely shocked there hasn't been a plot where Sonic and Sally haven't had to deliver a baby LOL. But now we've said it, watch it show up. I don't mind Sally having some basic knowledge of stuff, but they really needed to have someone around to be the expert. She can't possibly know everything under the sun. I do think NICOLE is like a pre-Google Google LOL. Why did no one else have something like NICOLE though? She doesn't seem like she should be THAT advance for the tech they have... but then I guess the comics did do more with her to make her more advanced. It's just that, before the comics expanded on her, she just kind of felt like normal technology for the world they set up. It'd be kind of interesting if there were more robotic devices around like her.

OMG it's a maturity fetish, not a horse fetish... I'm not helping my case. I actually thought of hilarious other Zone/AU hijinks for Papa Doc, too LOL. I think the idea is that kids only want to hear stories about kids even though superheros like Superman and Batman prove that's false LMAO. I just didn't think about their ages when I was a kid so that part didn't appeal to me back then. They could have been 21 and I wouldn't have known. I totally agree though. It wouldn't make any sense for an archaeologist to be 14-18. Maybe if he was just in training, but it takes years of study to be ready for field work. Or, at least, field work where you're not just the assistant. And it's legit weird that the adults don't mind taking orders from high schoolers. It's nice to see adults reacting to that or even challenging it. NGL That was one thing I really liked about a joke in Gravity Falls. Soos, an adult, left his girlfriend with the twins during an attack. "I'll distract her while Dipper and Mabel keep you safe." "Soos, these are children." It made me realize how rarely that gets said in stuff like this LOL. But seriously, why were all the adults okay with teenagers leading the war?

And I knew you'd be able to come up with something good for him! :D

Well I don't mean to but in on this conversation but the reason I see that why Sonic,Sally ,and etc are leading this war is that most if not all of the adults were either killed or roboticesd so yeah I honestly think that's why Sally and Sonic or the top dogs is because there were no one else to lead or help them.

That might be the reason, but it's just a little hard for me to swallow that most or all of the adults would be killed or roboticized but not the kids, especially since most of the main characters weren't even pre-teens when it all went down IIRC. That'd call for us to believe that somehow all the little kids could escape, but none of the adults could do the same.

Well I see most of the Adults tried to save the kids from Robotnink and have Rosie and some other adults to Knothole to watch over them but most of the adults that were going to watch over the kids didn't make it. But Rosie and maybe one or two adults did survive and helped raise and train the kids

Sorry, I didn't even realize this was here until today! I think this is an "agree to disagree" situation, since AFAIK there's no concrete evidence present in SatAM to suggest that all the adults in Mobotropolis (Lupe and the others presumably didn't come from there, so I'm not counting them) were wiped out or roboticized. With the comic, I don't know.

If that's your headcanon, then that's totally fine, but personally it's hard for me to buy that all but two or so adults are dead/robots.

I'm not saying that all of the adults were taken out maybe I should've phrased it differently as maybe most of the adults got separated from Rosie and the kids at the time and just ended up in a different part of mobius fighting the good fight against Robotnik. I think that would be the lighter part of my head canon
