I try to avoid uploading stuff from the same fandom too soon for variety's sake, but this was the only sketch of mine's ready to be posted. I'll try to do better next week, I swear!
Anyways, these are my current redesigns for the Acorn royal family. Top left, we have sketches of real red squirrels for reasons I'll explain shortly. Beside them is an early attempt at drawing Queen Alicia, Princess Sally and Prince Elias' mother. Here she's not only a chipmunk in name now, but in appearance too. At the same time though, I did try to make her look like Sally. I'm still not sure exactly sure just which sub-species of chipmunk she should be.
Below that, we have Maximilian Acorn and Alicia together. I remember Max being called a ground squirrel. Looking through photos of various ground squirrel species though, I didn't see a single one resembling Max (I can guess at why he doesn't look like one, but it's just a theory). But he does look like a red squirrel to me, so that's what I made him. I also didn't want him looking like he's eighty years old or something, and tried to make his kingly get-up less obviously Western European-influenced. Alicia was given some really lovely dresses in both the comic and the fan art I stumbled over, and she did look like a queen straight out of a fantasy, which fits with my view on how the Sonic-verse should be. But I didn't bother with making her dress too detailed here since I was more focused on her physical features.
Then we have a bunch of doodles of Elias. I wanted him to look like he could actually be the result of a union between a red squirrel and a chipmunk while still using his base design (which I do like for the most part -- hey, don't say I never said anything nice about Archie comics). As you can see, he's got face, tail, and back stripes from Alicia's side of the family. His and Alicia's cheek stripes aren't consistent from sketch to sketch, I know. I'm still trying to decide exactly how they should look. I've settled on giving him a pompadour thanks to another fan pic I saw of him that I thought was cool. Also, I feel my redesign of him makes it easier to do a gender swap with him, since he'd actually look like a girl version of himself instead of a Sally clone with a long tail.
Bottom left is an original fan character who'll show up in my Sonic fics later on. She doesn't have a name yet, but she's an older lady in her sixties and an American gray squirrel. She's not royalty, but really really would like to be.

Elias looks like a perfect combo of his parents, too. I can see elements of both of them there while remaining unique. And he plucked his eyebrows! He already looks like he has more personality than the comics gave him, too. The realistic squirrel at the top is so adorable, too! XD
I'm already excited for the gray squirrel lady, especially since I have a pretty good idea how she plays into things. :3 As usual, you did a great job!
LOL. story suggestion is helping with crafting his new personality. There will be no gigantic eyebrows in my Sonic-verse! Red squirrels are little cuties, I agree!
Glad you like squirrel lady! I was aiming for across between Madame Medusa from Rescuers and Baby Jane Hudson with her.
I always like hearing your thoughts and input!
Oh, was he the one that suggested the idea you told me about? It was a really good one. (Trying to avoid spoilers with that statement LOL.) I can also see how it's helping develop Elias as a real character.
I think you did a great job incorporating those two into her design. I can see the influence! I'm also just pleased those were influences on her. XD I haven't seen either of those movies in forever. I should go check them out again.
LOL, yeah, that's him.
Her design might be slightly tweaked, but I think it works for her so far. Why not? Rescuers needs more love, because it's become trendy to bash on it. And I admit I've never see Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, but I've hear of it and would to catch it on TCM or something if they ever show it on there.
I didn't know people were hating the Rescuers. I knew people thought it was boring or not as good as the sequel, but I didn't know about the bashing. I can understand having a preference or not being into it, but I can't really remember it being worth outright bashing. Unless I'm forgetting something, it was mostly harmless and was, at worst, a little slow and low-key.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is a pretty good movie IMO. If you can catch it, I totally recommend watching it. If you end up liking it, I'd also recommend Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte if you haven't already seen it.
Oh and here's another idea for you or anyone who wants it how about having Antonie being in 3rd in command of the freedom fighters. Now hear me out he does come from a military family and is pretty smart I would think in your story he gets to that position by not only showing improved skills in fighting but also showing his tactics for planning missions. Now that doesn't mean I want Sally or Sonic to take an I.Q hit but I would be nice to see Ant grow to become more trusted.
Good idea bad one let me know peace
I do really like that. Compared to the other options it honestly makes the most sense to have him as third in command, and it's just nice to see Twan's other skills be acknowledged more since it's something rare to see. Even though Antoine is my favorite, I would never dumb Sally or Sonic down. I make it a point to showcase all characters' good traits and bad ones even if I don't especially care for them. But with the way the relationship between the Freedom Fighters are developing and evolving in Past Regrets though (you'll see what I mean once I get the story posted), I don't know would that ever happen or not. I'm not going to rule it out, but we'll see what happens.
Even if I don't end up using it, I would love to see someone utilize it!
I have issues with how the comic handled Elias' disappearance (and just his whole character in general). It would've made more logical sense for Max to have kept Elias with him since he was the oldest plus the rightful heir and let Alicia take Sally. And if they were escaping Robotnik before he took over, why didn't they arrest him or something since they already were aware he was plotting against them? It's why I set up Elias' existence from the beginning in Knight Errand and had his separation from Sally and co occur in a different way.
I love the facial markings you put on their designs, especially Elias--he looks like the result of a union between a squirrel and a chipmunk and have him looking like his own unique person. The dagger is a nice touch, as it shows that he can be lethal when he needs to be! Btw, I approve of the pompadour--pompadours are just SO cool.
Ooooh OFC in her sixties? I so wanna find out who she is--she looks ticked off. XD
I can't wait to see more from you, whether it's Sonic or something different altogether!
Eli carried what were described as "exotic daggers" in the comics. I just made up something for him here, but Archie did make them sound like pretty awesome weapons, so I probably should've stuck with them. Yay! I wondered if anyone else would like the pompadour, or if it was just me.
I'd love to explain more about the OFC, but it'd spoil things. If you're really interested though I could tell you via note or something!
Again, I appreciate all your kind words.
Heh, either way, the dagger here looks really cool and fitting for Eli here.
Hmm...wellllll as much as I'm interested to know what you have planned for the OFC, I think I'll wait until that moment comes when she makes her debut. Good surprises are the best ones. But thank you, though! I appreciate it.
Yes, Sally's hair is swept forward. Oo, I never considered that detail about their respective hairstyles, but it's a good one! Plus, the pompadour not only looks nice, it's a little easier to draw then some of the other hairstyles I've seen him be given.
Anytime! You're right about good surprises being the best ones.
