Very exciting project for me.
The main difficulty this time was trying to force myself to use SOME photo elements in my work due to a realization that right now I can't paint everything by hand. I ended up using few photos for the decorative wood in header. However, in traditional manner, I hand painted the scroll and the rest of the wood to be used as background between content.

this looks awesome. im not nuts about the background.. maybe its just that it seems like a not smooth transition between the page and the background, so maybe if you did something around the edge of the design it would look better.. or maybe if there was just some sort of pattern on the background. anyway the actual site bit looks great.
I like it, and I wouldn't use a brown background-color.
Instead I would maybe add a small brown ( wooden ) border to the whole site, and give it a small dropshadow to make it pop

That could work quite well. I'll try it if I'll ever get a few minutes of free time.

It's really nice but I think the background should have a brown color tone, too. The grey looks so boring here.
It makes the site stand out from the background, I did not want them both to look pretty and let the eye wonder. 
That's true, but I think a bright brown will do this, too.
Ill try it. I just though the brown would start outweighing the blues in the design and the background is gray with a tint of blue.
