The battle for spring was a slog. It was Page's turn to trudge out to the pastures and check on the mares this morning and she wasn't enjoying it. Of course Delia's week was all full of warm weather and the false hope of spring. Page didn't think about the mud or wet puddles Delia had to work around during that unusually warm week. She simply lamented the warm weather in regards to the current light snowfall.

The horses seemed content, though. The mares had watched patiently as Page walked the long winding path through the pasture spreading hay on the ground. Each group disturbed from their morning grazing as she passed. Strangely, she found Glitter Girl with the Warlander Twinkle Toes rather than with the other expectant mothers. Normally the pale mare got along beautifully with the others.

"Did they kick you out?" Page spread the last armful of hay near the duo, shook her sleeves back down over her chilled hands - should have brought gloves - and stepped around Twinkle Toes to inspect Diva. She froze the moment the albufera came fully into view. At some point in the night she had gotten into a scuffle with someone. Her blanket had been torn open and the remains of it hang from her neck and belly straps. Now it made sense why she was huddled up with Tinker. Page sighed. The poor thing was probably freezing. Even the Amabilis mares were bundled up in light blankets to supplement their winter coats after the warm spell.

In fact, Page scanned the scattered herd in the pasture. The only horses not sporting even a light blanket were the Warlanders and the Slavkos mares. Of course most of the warmbloods were also clipped. Page unbuckled the remains of Diva's shredded blanket then used her spare leadrope, normally belted around her waste, to lead the shivering mare inside. "I think it's a stall day for you today, miss Diva." Page informed the rotund mare as she turned her loose in her thickly bedded stall. "And a call to your mum."

Diva made the routine circle of her stall sticking her nose in her empty grain bucket then her water bucket, then to her toy hanging in the other corner and finally back to the door. By the time she'd settled in Page had returned with a spare blanket for the mare. Once Diva was bundled up Page moved on to the rest of her chores, pausing every so often to check on both Diva and the trio of expecting mothers in the pasture. It would be rotten luck for them to drop when the weather was still waging winter wars on spring.
