The problem with having the weapon's hud down in the bottom corner is that you have to do twice as much hunting to find out how much HP and ammo you have. I propose we put both in the top :P

You're working in the same HUD space as character space, so it would be extremely easy :D
Let's say it's a health bar: Assuming 1 HP = 1 Pixel, you could load in two vertical strips, both one pixel in width. One strip would be light red for remaining HP, the other would be dark red for taken HP.

//When it comes to drawing the bar, you could have a loop that continues until the width of the bar:
for( int i = 0; i < maxHP; i++ ){

//Then, you could make sure the offset is incremented (add a pixel)
offset.x++;

//Test to see what strip is needed
if( i < currentHP )

//Then you could render the bar

else
