I went for random walk and just happened to have the camera with me one evening when this young Grebe popped up not 3 foot away from me. To start with he was within my minimum focus distance. I managed to get this shot as he was swimming away. I have always wanted to get a frame filling portrait shot of these magnificent birds and I have never had the opportunity as they are always so skittish and spoend all their time out in the middle of the lakes whenever people are around.

Light was poor due to overcast clouds and a rainstorm coming in. Luck really was on my side to be able to pull this one off!

Sometimes  the accidental lucky ones are the best.

If you ever go to Norfolk I've found Wroxham and Potter Heigham to be reasonably good for Grebes, If one is in the area on the day the middle of the river isn't too far away and they're a little more accustomed to people.
