Hah I think the whole point is to get away from the green unfortunately (or fortunately). I've been on the mobile site for a while and it's not been the original green for ever.

:grump:   It was bad when the logo looked more like a Z... then good ol' Fella didn't get much exposure like before... then someone reminded about the "Like/Unlike button"... then some submissions from some artists, if you'd like to download them for reference, aren't anymore as ( "title"_by_"user"-da-unique code ) but just plain "File"...

Now this...

Aaaa I don't even remember the like/unlike.... O: oi oi I didn't know about the submission download either, that's annoying.

:grump:   After mt reassignment, I tried to download some submissions from a few art-senpais; my surprise was that -- not the usual [ "title' of submission"_by_"username"-dA unique code ] format, but a jumbled-yet-excessively long code with Wix, and ends up just as a "File" on download ( I had to manually re-title the file everytime, frutrating :shakefist: )

Gawd... I hope they really don't turn dA into a wannabe-Facebook facsimile...

I'm worried more about how it will work that what it looks like. Frankly, this is the probably the butt-ugliest shade of green available, so I won't be too sad to see it go.

Hah, I know I said look but I do mean more functionality, like for instance I hear it's no longer possible to mass delete notifications, which is insane.

Tbh I've been on the mobile site mostly, I forget how bleh that green looks.

They need to do something...too many of the people who used to make this place vital have left. I don't know what I think of the new changes yet; too soon to say. But I'm glad they're trying something. I would like to see them put a lot more energy into changes aimed at improving things for the lit community here, though. We're always an afterthought.

I mean, all the people I know left ages ago for personal reasons, with a minority saying they felt they'd outgrown this place (and even then it was more the influx of children than site changes). From a business perspective, stands to reason they focus on the bits they can monetize, though you'd think the amount of contests we throw would help v:

By "wait", I mean "other".  DA is going to change.  It has for the nearly 13 years I've been here.

I'm still here.

I'll just leave that there.

I'm absolutely not.  In fact, I credit in large part this site for guiding me on a path to where I am now.

The way I figure, if it's worse than the share buttons, it's game over.  If not, we all move on and forget what the site even looked like in 2018.

Life happens.

Are there screenshots I can look at? I don't keep up with news on this site, so I had no idea. Not surprising given the app and improvements they made in terms of responsiveness in the design.

If you go to deviantarteclipse.com you should be able to see stuff I think. Tbh the main surprise for me is how long it's taking, although I also get the impression they're ripping out the old code and building from the base up.

I'm prob remembering wrong, but IIRC the current site is still built over a lot of the original code. I've been involved with redesigning a site that's similarly based on server-side scripting and learned from that it's often easier than rebuilding from the ground-up. (This is actually why we're still using ColdFusion, even tho it's not very popular anymore.)

Looking at the site right now and it's shit they should've been doing 5+ years ago TBQH. Lit might potentially get shafted as far as browsing goes, but that will depend a lot of implementation. They claim there will be improvements on formatting, tho, so it may not be The Worst. Only time will tell.

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure this one is. I don't think they've ever taken away functionality except that time Angelo tried to dump the useless shoutbox. But since this new version is morusing a lot of functions, I'm thinking it is brand new and all that jazz.

Yeah, the problem I've also had is they've got some Facebook esque functions which are less functional than Facebook. Like this giant cover image on the profile that you can't even move or resize.

I mean, I just don't like that they thought this was sufficient for a beta. That's weird as hell to me, granted I've never worked for a website but still.

Yikes. As an art site, I would think some kind of editing functionality for cover images would be even more important. But I've long been frustrated by their priorities.

I've never worked on a staff as large as dA and haven't rolled out any beta testing on that level (some stuff that would count, I guess). Generally, you expect everything to be in good working order and stuff like editing capability thought through more than that. But when a new version rolls out, there are always the longer term, more complex goals, the new features and improvements that are rolled out later on w/o significant changes to the UI.

Yeeeaaah, and Muro is totally a thing. Idk this whole thing seems more like it's in the QA phase than all the way to a beta. There's so much functionality that isn't live.

There didn't seem to be a way for me to access a beta version of site? I think one of my prev projects at work would be "QA phase" like you're talking, i.e. rolled out to a small group of test users.

New Eclipse thing? If you want I can hook you up with a subscription so you can get access, beta testing is a subscriber feature.

Word. I also think of QA as the phase where you run test scripts and make sure all the usual stuff works.

new dA isn't for writers.
that's what eclipse tells us.
but it's rainbows and butterflies if you're a digital/visual artist

It's explicitly listed in the journal, but I'm not impressed that it wasn't important enough for the "beta"

That said, if I were a pro artist I'd be leery of having inflation softcore next to my work on a regular basis.

Yeah, I saw the journal, it's still annoying to see them push literature back despite it having a large presence on site.

The new layout is very generic, the initial customization options are just as bland imo and having to navigate through a few menus to get to Groups is a big bleh, not to mention the mess the inbox had turned to, especially not being ble to delete notifications in bulk. I hope they'll fix that later on.

I dislike Eclipse, mainly because it doesn't treat artists equally and doesn't really give me any value to use it for.

Yeah, I think they released this way, way too early. Like, this shit should still be in QA. They should be running scripts of common things people do and getting those features in stat.

There's a catch 22 which I'm amazed they did nothing to deal with, if Wix is trying to monetize the site through more ad sales to professionals then the community minded people who volunteered for the alpha are exactly the wrong people for this v:

They could also try monetizing through subscriptions because people love the features, but I'm not sure that worked out that well for the old guard.

This is dA's biggest problem if they want to treat themselves as comparable to Behance (or even Ello). A huge base of the site is fan art, including erotic. If I mention dA to anyone who hasn't used the site a lot, they know it for inflation fetish art or w/e. Updating the look and functionality might improve their rep a little, but if they don't address management or moderation, it's not going to do much to change it.

Yeah seriously, and I do think that ship sailed ages ago. People on fetish and fanfiction sites know this is a good place to come, and a dedicated team of moderators will only be a drop in the ocean.

Oh yeah, there would have to be *significant* rebranding for them to lose that reputation. But it would still be nice if they prioritized moderation and that side of things more.

Yeah seriously. I've heard it's unusual to leave that much of it up to volunteers. It was cute when da was a garage operation, not so much anymore.

dA hasn't been a garage operation for nearly 15 years and was a better site when it was TBH. I'm still in touch with someone I originally met thru this site back in 2003 or thereabouts, and she wound up leaving 10+ years ago and following me to LiveJournal because she couldn't stand what it had become. (Oh hey, looks like her profile is still up www.deviantart.com/moon )

Hah you know it's bad when LJ is the preferred alternative.

It was built like a garage operation and I don't think they ever really did shit to handle scaling it out of there.
