I belatedly realized today, that I still got an unredeemed gift for System Shock 2 from Good Old Games that expires at midnight today. Since I already own it on Steam I don't need it again. So I'll post it here for my friends and watchers.
Valid only once unfortunately:
NALSA97D5B29A845OS
Just be kind enough to leave a comment after redeeming it, so that future readers don't waste their time trying.

Merry Christmas!

I just read about it a few minutes ago on a news site. Am still shell shocked about it in my mind, but the rest of you deserve to know as well.

Last entries on his twitter account, probably posted by his daughter as she posted the same on hers:

AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER.
Terry took Death’s arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night.
The End.

So what's the verdict here on Knights of the Old Republic II?

I ran it with no other mod, but the latest version of the Restored Content Mod.

I liked it more that KOTOR1, but couldn't really put a finger on it why. Biggest plus:
After the beginning and learning about my PCs background, I'd assumed that the Light Side Path would involve my PC "admitting" he was wrong to go fight the Mandalorians against the Councils orders, because Pacifism FTW and stuff. Instead you can in fact defiantly maintain that you were right and they were wrong. Letting their fear of doing something wrong paralyse them into nothing. Showing them up by again fixing things while they sit on their asses. Also in general I liked the "personalized"-style of the plot rather than confronting some great menace.
Which leads to my biggest minus:
Even in the restored content mod the Light Side Ending involves the Exile.... going into Exile again with only Anton following you. No option of staying in the Republic and building a better Jedi Order with you companions. Also the whole "split of from group"-situation after the crash makes no sense whatsoever. Where they all catapulted out of the Ebon Hawke or something???
I got to revise my score for DAO from 9/10 to 9.5/10 after this due to it being a Bioware RPG with a good ending unlike the pattern that seems present otherwise. There must have been a global goat shortage when it was released from all those that needed to be sacrificed to the gods to bring that about .

    Other thoughts about it:
    - and+ Playing KOTOR1&2 after the ME trilogy was actually a good thing, otherwise I'd have met the Mandalorians earlier and realized how much the Krogan are an Alien version of them.
    - Too much forced party-member use. Planning levelups and gear only to find out you are forced to use char a instead of b is frustrating, especially if there's razor-thin justification at best.
+ You can quicksave in combat, which is REALLY handy for difficult fights after a series of cutscenes.
    - You're going to have most lightsaber combat feats before getting your first one. Not as bad as having to not level up to save for after getting your Jedi Powers in KOTOR1 but still annoying.
+ Non-braindead party AI in combat

So what does everybody else think?
Also what are other recommended mods? Compatible with the Restored Content Mod, that is. I read a list of mods that are INcompatible with it, but not one for the other way round.

Make sure to watch: Twisted - The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier from Team Starkid. As you can probably guess the musical is about Ja'far, the honest and hardworking public servant who's struggling to make the Kingdom a better place despite an incompetent Sultan and murderous thieves causing problems. Then to top it all, when the Prince of their biggest trading partner comes to renew their trade agreement the stupid and naive princess sets her tiger on him.

or Enatic Succession or Councillor Appointments. Crusader Kings 2 version 2.1.1 finally gives you the equality update all you Ladies have really been waiting for :D : Rulers not only can now have up to 5 lovers, but also female rulers now have access to the same full set of options regarding lovers as male ones. So unlike FemShepards or FemWardens, CK2 FemRulers now have a harem option ;) something that used to be restricted to Male Muslims and Vikings.
Same goes for same-sex lovers or homesexual rulers as well.
Together with what can happen if a character has the "right" traits the designers seem to be wanting to outdo Game of Thrones ;) .

even in this modern age of Frozen and Once Upon a Time:
Put a guy in his place by winning a Drinking Contest ;) .

Currently Carola and I are watching both the Period Drama Dae Jo Young as well as finally some new-ish episodes of Once Upon a Time (just finished with season 2) and a few days ago we saw an episode where Geumlan, agent extraordinare and quick with her blade clashes yet again with Gaepil, ex-bandit of less-than-impeccable manners ;) .

Only instead of a stereotypical scene of an action girl taking down some guy in a quick bout of combat she wins a drinking contest instead.
Found the scene on YouTube:

Actual scene is only just above 3 minutes after which it loops for some reason.

Speaking of Once Upon a Time: I really hope at some point there'll be a flashback story about how Mulan fell into a portal and ended up in the Enchanted Forest somehow. Because no matter mow much I like her, I still want to scream "She's an actual historical figure, not a Fairy Tale character!" at the TV screen every time.

I know it's two days early, but I wanted to write something to replace the sad previous journal entry.
So forgive me for being a bit too early with my Christmas wishes to you all!

Also: Paradox Interactive released a Free Christmas Music DLC for Crusader Kings 2 featuring 2 Christmas sons with the lyrics "somewhat" adapted to a Strategy Gamers Christmas.
Besides as DLC the two songs can also be downloaded as on MP3 file here: forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/s… where there is also a transcript of the Lyrics.
Oh and if you still havn't given it a try Crusader Kings 2 is currently on Sale on Steam as part of their Christmas Sale for 75% off for 20 hours remaining. I can't recommend this game high enough.

As some of you, whom I've been "talking" a lot to recently already knew and the rest of you could probably guess from the lack of any updates my father-in-law did not in fact recover. Turns out during the time he was kept in a sleepcoma or possibly before right after the operation he suffered a series of strokes and although his vitals had re-stabilized the damage done was too great.
The entire family came together at the hospital a few hours ago and we all said goodbye.

That's all I can write at the moment, but you all deserve to know as I know for myself how it is to worry about the condition of internet-friends and not hear anything at all either way.

Condolences to Carola should be adressed to either her DevArt account:

or her facebook account

I'm not up for writing many details, but still want to get it off my chest. 11 days ago he got a triple bypass that went quite well actually. But then a few days later it turned out he got several infections - something you actually have to expect after an operation. 2nd operation went as well as could be expected. But the infection didn't recede nor do the medications have much of any effect. 2 days ago he was still about as well as after the 2nd operation. But over the last two days his condition has declined and nothing the doctors do seems to reverse it. They have now told my mother in law that his prognosis is poor.
With me living in Sweden for the last 10 years I am quite close to my in-lawns and have been moping about wanting to write it off my chest for the last few hours, but couldn't think of anything coherent.
Naturally Carola is taking it worse than I do with her having been dead tired all day having been a blessing now as it enabled her to fall asleep early in the evening.
So please send whatever thoughts, well wishes, prayers, hugs, etc you can to her. She is found here:

Good night everyone.

Update: Carola, her mother and one of her brother travelled to Umeå again today, while I am unfortunately struck with the flu and therefore really shouldn't be near a hospital. Also Carola wants someone to be here to wait for Mr Cat to come back home after several days absence - which he did today in the evening actually.
Anyways at about 20:00 Carola called me again to tell me, that there were no changes from yesterday except for his fever receding a little bit. That was actually somewhat good news as from Monday to Thursday his condition had been deteriorating.
Appreciate all your wellwishes, just don't feel up for individual replies.

Update 2: Carola and her mother came back home. My father-in-laws condition is described by the doctors now as "critical but stable". No more deterioration at least.

Update 3: Summary: Somewhat better.
It would be quite a stretch to say he is ok. However his condition has continued to stabilize over since the weekend.
He is still in what is would be literally translated "induced sleep coma" to ease his body basically and also is on dialysis which they hope he'll only need temporarily while is body is full of antibiotics and the infection. BUT his vital signs and overall prospects have slowly been improving since.
As a matter of fact they are looking into the possibility of transferring him from Umeå to Sunderbyn, which would put him only 60km away instead of 240km, since - provided transporting him would is safe - he does not need to be at a heart specialist clinic anymore. After all his bypass operation still was successful, it is all post-op-complications at the moment which were so unexpectedly severe.
Warning BIG HUGE Bioshock Infinite spoilers coming up. Read only if you completed the game.

Well so today Carola and I finished Bioshock Infinite. Afterwards, when browsing the internet about BI, which I'd not done before to avoid spoilers I read amongst other things that some people really didn't like the ending. Now I am not one of those, however there is one thing that made is less memorable for me than it could have been: I'd already guessed that Booker and Comstock were the same person in different timelines, which kinda makes the ending less... well twisty. Still highly memorable, but not shocking in a WYK way or finding out that Elanors mother isn't just some rambling intellectual, but actually has a scaringly plausible plan to shove collectivism down everyones throat thanks to plasmids.
Now two of the reasons I'd guessed on that are:
1. Some recording we found who's details I don't remember, but what I DO remember was Comstock using the word "Me" at a certain point, that's what aroused my suspicion.
2. When it comes to stories about alternate realities, the big bad being an alternate version of the hero isn't exactly a new idea.

Now looking back however there was a third hint regarding, not so much pointing at Comstock being alternate Booker but of them being father and daughter. Which brings me to the topic of "Sometimes the absence can be a spoiler as well". Namely: Ever since BI was released there's been no lovely-dovey fanart of Booker and Elizabeth. Having been here a while I'd anticipated the fangirls getting to work and making lots and lots. But nothing. Well obviously after having played the game I know why.
But yes funnily enough even though I'd not been getting any spoilers whatsoever about BI here on DevArts over these last few months, the absence rather than the presence of something served as hint.

Ever feel like playing "Mass Effects Galaxy Quest"? Or more precisely a game that's an affectionate Parody of ME, with also plenty of Matrix, Infamous & Independence Day shout outs?
Well that's SR4 in a nutshell. Besides it taking place in an openworld sandbox (plus Alien Ships interiors) it's got nothing in common with the GTA series anymore. It's SciFi and Superheroes. The prologue has you saving the US from a nuclear strike and then Aliens invade the White House. So it's up to you to save mankind.
Like ME you can fully customize your character. Unlike ME, both genders get 3 voices each and TONS of customization options for outfits. Presidential Suit, Classy Outfits, not-so-classy outfits ;) , "Female Fantasy Armour", Superhero Costumes, Star Trek and Star Wars shout out costumes, etc.
Keith David aka Admiral Anderson stars as himself (and your Vice President) and gets do to a version of Jokers Epic moment at the finale of ME2. Further ME shout-outs:
- You can romance everyone in your crew as either gender (expect KD, probably because he plays as himself) and are rewarded with obvious parodies of ME's romance scenes.
- You pick several teams for the final assault. Whether you did everyones Loyalty Quest influences survival and which ending you get.
- Your character makes an epic speech before the final assault totally reminding one of ME.

Also I love Laura Bailey aka FemaleVoice1. Played SR3 first as a Male then replayed it with her. This time I played SR4 with her the 1st time right away. She so totally fits. Because her voicing FemBoss sounds like it FemShepard and Professor Higgins have had a daughter (aggressive leader with perfect deadpan snarking English) who is then Jack babysits a lot (swearing).
So if you like me never really got into GTA and unlike me had also avoided Saints Row, because of that you should give SR4 a chance.

After almost three weeks and almost drowning back in Bavaria it seemed at times Carola and I are back. Unfortunately we forgot to pack our digital camera and didn't want to risk our Android phones at the beach, so no pictures from there. And with the torrents of rains in Bavaria as you might have read in the news not much to report there either. Mostly stayed indoors and met family.
Whatever pictures we did take should be on Carolas and/or my facebook page in a few days.

Despite bad weather 4 out of 10 days it was great to go all the way to Italy again where my family used to stay every year when we were kids and it sure was greater to eat at a Pizzeria every day ;) .

Not much else to report that I can think of. Ask me in the comments if I left out something interesting ;) .

9. In return, you must post this in your journal.
