Hello everyone!

This is about graphic design school again.

As I wrote in my last journal, I passed the entrance exams for the graphic design classes at the school "Die Grafische" in Vienna!

I also had taken the entrance exams for the multimedia classes   at the same school and yesterday I was offered a place in this course, too.

So now I can decide what I want to do! I'm really thankfull for that! =)

I want to choose the course which offers better chances to find a good job in the future.

:bulletgreen: In the graphic design classes students learn everything about advertising and how to create good advertising concepts. They learn how to create good designs and everything about pre-press.

:bulletgreen: The multimedia classes are mainly about creating moving pictures (2D and 3D animations) for websites, video games, ...

Which of these two courses offers the best chances to find a good job later? What will be sought-after in the future? Can anyone give me some hints? I'd be really thankfull!

Both are really good, my mate is a Graphic design major, although do to too many reasons to go into, she hasn't gone into the business, mainly because you need to have a few years X.P. in a job in order to find any really decent jobs in the field. Graphic Design personal wise, give you a deep understanding of how to make your art get attention, and come in handy when helping out with your mate (aka me) when they are trying to make something appealing.

Down side, if your an obsessive type like my mate, you tend to analyze a lot of things, from TV ads, to how things are around you, house, in stores, and so on. Though you'll also have a deeper appreciation to the efforts put into something by another designer, or in case of websites or TV ads that are below par, the utter lake of said effort.

A little of an outsider's view on the Graphic design field, from living with one for the last 3+ years hehe.

I would suggest going for the multimedia course. Graphic design might do alot of focus on printing, but the principles of graphic design are the foundation of multimedia as well. A lot of advertising these days IS animated and also on the web. Personally I would go for multimedia. You would have more to learn from that than graphic design as I am in a similar course myself going for a degree in multimedia and I assure you.. Graphic design is an aspect of that degree so you really get the best of both worlds. While paper is still important in our society, things have really been moving more toward moving animated images, even for advertising. So, go for the multimedia and from there you can learn some things about pre-press on the side (it's really not all that hard to be honest with ya) but you will learn the principles of design in Graphic Design and in multimedia.. you learn those as well. They are the foundation of art. My graphics design classes simply reiterate what I learned in basic design class.

So, I hope this helps but congrats on getting accepted ^_^

I'd say graphic design because it's advertising that makes money.
About 2D and 3D animations... in my opinion unless you do additional courses about videogame making, you'll only use them for websites and banners i.e. advertising again ;-P *or* you could decide to enter the movie business and learn how to use your 2D / 3D skills for animated movies, but Europe is not the best place for this kind of things I believe.
No matter what you choose, best whishes and good luck!

well, in my case, I'm finishing graphic design, and I'm planning to have multimedia curses, the reason is because, at least where i live, there are a lot of bad designers because they only learn how to use the programs, and the thing is that graphic design is based more on theory than on beauty, of course the client will chose beauty, but, beauty can be forgotten in 5 seconds if you can't really base on the why of it, but, having theory with beauty and skills, if you have both, it will make it easy for you how to get a job

hope this help you

I'd be glad to give advice on the matter if I lived in the same country as you. =/
I don't know what the job market is like in Austria, but I can certainly tell you about how things are here in the States.

To give you an idea, I have an associates degree in Graphic Design. I managed to hold a job for seven months before being laid off over Christmas Vacation.
.....That was over two years ago.
Haven't been able to get back in the job market ever since. =/

Again, this doesn't speak for whatever opportunities you might have there in Austria, so really my word there doesn't really amount to much. =P
