Had a few ideas, so just took the ones I like the most and threw them all into one thing. And in case you were wondering, no I don't think Asami is useless. In terms of straight-up utility, she's probably the most important member due to the fact that she provides the team with supplies and transportation. Whether she's an important member based on how interesting she is and the role she plays in the story is debatable.

Y'know, considering how well-versed Zaheer was in Air Nomad culture, and knew enough about airbending forms to instantly become a master of it when he gained the ability, he probably could've taught Korra airbending as well as any other master. Masters of theory can be good instructors too.
