Harajuku Fashion Styles

These are the main, well-known female fashion subcultures in Harajuku, fashion district in Tokyo. I'ts just about female styles, so many other famous styles like Oshare kei, male fashion subculture, do not appear.

Lolita (or Loli): I've talked many times about this style, however it takes fashion features from Victorian Era and Rococo, mixing and reinventing in many other styles: Sweet, Gothic, Punk, Country, Classic, Hime, Guro, Military. For more infos: [link]

Decora: very colorful and sweet, it has vivid colours: pink is a must. Everything is super kawaii (cute in Japanese), strawberries, hearts, sweets, and an overload of accessories: maaany necklaces, many bracelets, and maaaaany many hairclips. And many colorful socks or leggings or warmers.

Visual Kei: a music genre evolved into a fashion subculture. It could be considered the Japanese version of London's Punk. But it is very different: the hairstyle is straight and can come in blonde, brown or red colours. Red and black is the main colour of Visual Kei, there could be also violet or blue. Many pins, zips, a tie (not necessary), and tartan texure. Clear skin and particular lenses.

Fairy Kei: could be considered the pastel version of Decora, it uses only light pastel colours: lilac, violet, pink, blue, yellow are the main. Stars, magical gadgets, unicorns, plushies. Colorful glasses, colorful wigs, ribbons and tulle skirts are very used.

Kogal: its outfits are based on Japanese high school uniforms, so sometimes they can wear the seifuku (sailorfuku) but also English college outfits. It's about to look like a typical occidental teenager, so let's go with orange/darker tan, platinum blonde or brown hair, light colours make-up (making contrasts with the tan). Loose socks are a must, with very short skirt and oversized cardigans or shirts. Kawaii features like a cellphone covered with stickers and pendants. "Sister" style of Gyaru and Ganguro. For more infos: [link]

Cyberpunk: very know all over the world, it is imported from Europe and America but is is very popular in Harajuku. It is inspired by futuristic scenary and uses acid, fluo colours like green, blue, violet or pink, with black. Special wigs, goggles and gas masks.

Elegant Gothic (Aristocrat): subculture developed by guitarist and fashion designer Mana, it could be related to Lolita style, but its concepts are more mature and serious. Victorian Era inspired, it uses dark colours, laces, crosses, high heels boots and long skirts.

Let me start by saying that this was quite a pleasant surprise when I checked my inbox this morning. I'm not normally one to properly critique anything to do with fashion art or industry but I just couldn't help my self! It's Harajuku fashion!

First off, Lolita... This is actually something I could see my self wearing. The Victorian/everything else style is stylishly tailored into a playful but tasteful manor. The only advice I could really give for this is to add a little more colour. Perhaps a different colour hat or bow. Either way, I feel like it needs something to make it stand out a little more. Or, if you don't want any one item to stand out more than another, add other accessories that are white instead of blue. Also, in this case, it might help to outline in a different colour than the dress.

Next, Decora... This one managed to coax a full out laugh from me. It reminded me of the last time I visited Japan. I'm not actually very knowledgeable about Decora, but I'd like to think that I know enough to know that this is pretty spot on. The bag is the thing that really sold me. The only suggestion I could think of is to make the clips in her hair stand out a little more.

Third, Visual Kei.... I find this one very interesting. I had never heard of Visual Kei before today but I still enjoy looking at this one, it's close to punk but it's much more interesting in my opinion. I'm not much help in this case, but I would like to see this style in violet or blue and a few more zips.

Next, Fairy Kei.... I feel like this would have been my dream outfit when I was 5. There's even the cute little teddy bear to top it all off! I love the little thing around her neck (I'm assuming it's some sort of scarf), and the little star button. Though, I think that her jacket is a little too plain for my liking. I'm not actually sure what could be added, but I feel like there's something missing. Did I mention that I love the bear? He. Has. A. Blue. Bowtie.

And now, Kogal... Wow. Okay, I honestly can't find one thing to improve with this one except maybe to add a school crest/logo on her sweater or use a different shade of blue. But even then, it's not really necessary. This flirty but smart outfit seems to just scream Japan! Even the cell phone is perfect. I can practically touch the little pendants of Hello Kitty attached to it.

Next, cyberpunk This one really caught my eye. Like really caught my eye: it's amazing! The fish net gloves with ripped holes and the goggles with gas mask are awesome! The only things I could suggest is to change the colour of the skirt to the same hue as the shirt and to change the right stocking/sock to either a different colour or to smaller/different stripes (for some reason it's really bugging me). Other than that, this is perfect! I actually have a couple of friends who would wear this gas mask and all.

Last, Elegant Gothic Another beautiful design, you have a real way with long dresses. I absolutely love the cut of this dress, the collar, and the buttons going down the front but I also think that the necklace (at least I'm assuming that's a necklace) could have been a little different. Perhaps smaller, or not there at all. Also, I think it would have been just as good without the extra bow in the front. I think the smaller bow gives a more childish look to this style. Like you said, this is more of a serious and dark type of fashion. Other than that, this is a

I love the colors and how she designed clothing for all types. I love the colors on each piece! This is a true maserpiece! I love the shading. It makes it stand out. I also love that she made the model match with the clothes that they are wearing. Everything is just so perfect! I love how the artist made a certaint type of clothing like decora and Lolita! I truly am shocked how good this drawing is. Whoever drew this true masterpiece is one of the best artists I have ever seen! If whoever drew this was a designer I would have bought all of her clothing!

First I just want to notice that this is my first critique ever given.
But anyway, I really like this. I get the idea of every style on this, even the styles I don't know. And I love how the lolita is little bit old school because the bloomers are showing a little bit.
I think this work is more importantly to show what the styles are like, but I really would think that putting the models in different positions would be make this work more interesting.
But in the end this is great and detailed work on my opinion, great job!

Vision I give 4 stars I like how visually appealing the picture is however the facemasks are a little offputting for me. I think though the visual kei the black mask does accesorize well with the outfit. Although the cyberpunk facemask looks a little like a gag granted I know it is supposed to be some sort of face mask. I give 5 stars for origionality because eventhough I have most likely seen this a lot around deviantart I usually donot sees many witmasks on them. Although I donot see this grouping much either. Technique I will give 4 stars I feel it is a little small no offense meant. I usually like your bigger artworks. I especially loved the dresses of thewebsites google and such.

You have great vision for this piece. ^-^
I love the originality of the outfits you design!
You have put many great details; such as the tiny bow on the teddy bear on the Fairy Kei model, down to the the glittery bits in the Decora girl's hair and the netted gloves on the Cyberpunk model.
I can tell that you put a lot of thought and passion into your work, and this one for sure.
The originality that is in this piece really inspires me.
I really love this piece. I hope you keep up the great work, and keep up your passion that you have for designing! ♥

this is very well done, i love Japanese fashion as i can tell you did a great job with this. i love the colors too. it makes me want to go and make the visual kei one for a cosplay since i go to anime conventions. also the cyberpunk on is well done and the colors go great with it. the kogal designe looks like a modern school girl uniform mixed with sporty and thats great for modern wear. the lolita design could use a bit of color other than soft blue and white it reminds me of sweet lolita which your design works well with and you can use it for other colors to which is a plus
