Recoloring Stamp by Nefepants Recoloring Stamp by Nefepants
WARNING: The following description is a rant.

I'm getting really tired of deviants recoloring pictures, and then calling it art. It's not art, it's laziness. It means you don't want to develop a meaningful art skill.

For example:

[link]

It's just a screenshot from a show recolored on MSP.

And the thing that takes the cake is that they always argue that recoloring is a legitimate art form! It makes art that took hours just to sketch look easy. It's not.

So, if any recolor "artists" are reading this, then please go to art classes, so people will take you seriously.

EDIT: I meant to say art form. :iconfacepalmplz:

How is it "not an art form"? it's making new art from old art.

First of all, why are you commenting on literally one of my oldest pieces, something I created over six years ago?

Second of all, taking someone's pre-existing artwork, be it artwork online or a screenshot from a show and recoloring it is not art. It is art theft, and spitting on the intellectual property of others.

It doesn't matter if it's old. That justification is like saying that I can do a recolor of Mona Lisa just because it's an old art piece.

Buddy, do you need me to block you, or do you think you can keep your nonsense to yourself?

But it's my art. I see nothing wrong with recoloring my art.

Okay so apparently you have no self-control and like to spam long-dead Deviantart threads.

Shoo fly, don't bother me.

Spam? spam is posting multiple comments containing the same material over and over again, i'm simply asking questions that i'm curious about. "long-dead" this popped up as one of the most recent Recolor rants, i only looked for the recent ones.

IT TOTZ IS AN ART FORM UR JUS JELOUS.

I do like edit screenshots and stuff when I'm bored, but I certainly don't claim it's art, or upload it on an art site. LMAO.

I do as well, but I definitely don't pass it off as my own.

That's the only major gripe I have about recoloring. XD

There's no difference between editing a photo and recoloring it. They both take less time to edit it than the time it took the original artist to take. When they mean to transform someone else's work completely just by adding a few pretty colors is just insult on top of injury.

If it's photomanipulation, then that's a completely different can of beans. If you didn't get permission from the original artist to edit their work, they have no right to change it around.

There is something to be said for recoloring and giving *credit* to bring to life a vision that you could never with your own abilities draw or take your own photo of however :3 I would not even call those sort of tracing pictures recolors, they are just doodles IMHO :P

NOOOOOOO THAT PERSON TOOK A SCREEN SHOT FROM TOKYO MEW MEW AND RUINED IT! <:[

Lolz anyways... I, for the most part, agree with you but my motto is "anything can be art" so... yeah <:]

I mean, coloring for me is a form of art but it really depends on the situation. Some people just color without any outlining and it forms a picture, but you mean coloring a picture with outlines not made by them, right?

I still think it's a form of art BUT it's wrong. It's under the category of plagiarism. So basically they cannot claim their "work of art" :D

FYI, re-colouring is not easy. yes, some people call it an art form, but i just find it fun and something to do. i never say i drew the work, so i am giving the creators of the re-coloured art work credit. i just colour over things to find my sea legs, so i can draw my own art from scratch. but just saying that it is not an art form will not stop people from doing it.

Very true. But some people stick to recoloring like a crutch, and deceive themselves into thinking that they're fine the way their art is, and will refuse to change.

Not to mention it's against the rules. It's just sad. If you are that desperate go use a base.

Very true.

And, despite the cat their going against copyright infringement laws, they get a lot of views.

Which is sad. Reinforces the whole reason why they do it. I mean there are perfectly legitimate bases on this site that they can use. But they still do this instead. I think it's because they do get more views then if they use a base.

But, I still don't understand the basis of popularity for recolors.

I don't either. I think it's the whole trickery involved in it looks like the original. Also keywords help too. However great stamp and I totally agree.

Very true. I'm not really a fan of re-coloring "artists" (bleh) but I will say that SOME people do have some talent and can color/shade/ect. nicely.
It's very rare to see this and even if I do see one it's like:

"You have talent coloring-wise so why don't you use it to make something creative? Use that time it took to re-color and make something people will like for it's originality" ...

Yeah, but the majority of recolors/tracers don't even do a good job of that.
