Hey all, hope all goes well...

My New World project (my ASB timeline I mentioned in my last journal neethis.deviantart.com/journal…) is coming along slowly - I've realised just how hard it is to realistically populate a nearly empty Earth using only three extant and modern real-world nations >_< It's a lot harder than it might first seem to get something that looks and feels "right", and also which isn't just following patterns of previous colonisation. Half my problem is my national choices; France, Britain, and Spain, the world's three biggest fomer colonial powers, makes it almost impossible to design a "new" colonial plan, one which doesn't just mirror our own timeline, but with airplanes and satellites. I'm actually beginning to consider junking the entire thing and starting again, using different nations... any suggestions? Give me a dynamic group of three you'd like to see used :)

I've finished reading Ark by Stephen Baxter recently, and it's my latest recomendation; set in a future where the entire Earth faces the sort of flooding that only God or Kevin Costner could imagine, it follows the story of "Ark One", a spacecraft built with superluminal engines to enable a small chunk of humanity to flee our dying world to find a new home. The characters are deep, the setting rich, and it's not afraid to go into detail of the darker side of a dark time...

Golden Age is pretty much stagnated at the moment, unfortunately; I've got a lot in the works for it, but I'm sort of shelving it until inspiration strikes again. Unlike Electronic Arts or Microsoft, I'd rather take my time and publish a fully developed project that I feel confident and happy with, rather than rush and it not be satisfying, or have to retroact large chunks of lore or story later on ;)

Good hunting,

Have you thought about including unrecognised country? Not the ROC, Israel, the Korea, and other "close enough" countries but somewhere like Abkhazia or Transnistria. Transnistria is well developed industrially with a thousand Russian soldiers stationed there and a higher population, but Abkhazia has better developed agriculture, a navy and decent airforce and it generally less dependent.

Or maybe all of Georgia, including the breakaway bits?

Or you could have the alien bats from space be totally wacky and give them the Caucasus Emirate. Packed with autonomous Russian Republics, lots of Russia military personnel and come crazy Islamist diehards who are going to be emboldened by the fact their their country was chosen.

Hmm I like the idea of somewhere in the Caucasus...

I was thiniking on this a bit earlier, and I thought of somewhere brilliant - modern day Afghanistan, with all the thousands of allied soldiers that involves :P lol.

Yeah it's an interesting region. Our answer to the Edwardian Balkans.

Yeah that might be good. Perhaps you could pick a few countries that have an American or British Military presence so they can unite and try to resettle the homeland.

I'm considering lessening the ASB aspect and making the transported areas just large spherical regions rather than singular countries too, although I'm not sure yet - it still leaves it rather ASB anyways, heh...

Not yet, although I was considering one chunk being the Cornish Peninsula :P lol. It would allow me to populate this new world with more isolated or oppressed places without their bigger cousins - I could have Tibet without the PRoC, Iowa without the USA, Natal without South Africa etc.

On an unrelated note, you don't know of any program I could use to create a world map with the orientation realigned, do you? I want to create a map with the north pole in Wisconsin for another project...

I never knew Iowa was oppressed, but then Cornwall is not in any way and they still moan. It's an interesting idea. Maybe you could include a Russian Republic?

I'm afraid not, why?

And a unrelated note, can you think of a good name for a British Dominion of South Africa without the Boer Republics?
Basically Cape Colony, Natal and Walvis Bay
South Africa is the official name of Transvaal and I don't want to two countries with the same name.
Edwardia perhaps?

Well, it's remote at least :D Hmm yeah, some chunk of Siberia perhaps?

I knew a website years ago with it, but I can't find it now :P I want it for a project based on the film 2012 - rubbish film I know, but I'd love to construct the world decades on...

How about Azania? [link] If you want to name it after a monarch, the form "Edward's Land" is more likely... could also always go for "British South Africa", if it's still a dominion.

I think a world with just Kazakhstan, Thailand, and New Zealand would be pretty interesting. Peru, too, if you want something in the Americas.

Not only that, it would be interesting to see a country as an inland colonizer. There are so many potential ways it could expand around Eurasia.

I don't think you should use any of the powers, smaller nations would be more interesting to me.

Me, I'd like to see what would happen to Singapore if you dropped it into a world with nothing else.
I'd also like to see something from central Europe. I could swear I've had the idea for a ISOT Hungary. Serbia might be good too.
Have a look at these three maps for Potato, Rice and Wheat production, they should help you find somewhere that will be able to feed itself comfortably and export. Kenya, Nigeria, Uruguay and Denmark look pretty good.

Nigeria would be good as it produces a lot of oil too.

Oh and Denmark is the worlds leading producer of wind turbines btw.

I've accumulated quite a store of hitherto nigh unless knowledge on various countries, so if you need some info, or to know where to look I might be able to help.

Hungry might be good... I'm looking for entire nations though. The point of the maps is to have three or so nations from our own world, our own time, transported intact and entire from our world to an alternate Earth where humankind never evolved, and their change and development and settlement of this new empty Earth.

I like the idea of Panama... preserve the canal :) Even though they're seperated physically, it's likely that any nations so transposed would find out about each other rather quickly, via radio signals and the like.

true, but beign sperated so far in a "uncivilised"world would mean actual contact would take along time...sepcially as they no longer have the same kind of resources...like trade, imports, telecomunications, etc...

Alien Space Bats :D It's an alt-historians term for a universe where the divergence point is something that isn't feasible - the continents moving around, things or lands being moved through time, laws of physics changing etc - so therefore must've been caused by the Alien Space Bats :D

I suggest you go with island nations, since they're historically the ones who haven't been affected as much by the problems of continental nations. Also, it allows for a more interesting world order, where nations that in our time and age are pretty powerless could rise up to become great powers. :D

I'd suggest Iceland, Madagascar, Japan and Borneo and maybe Cuba and New Zealand.

Being continental isn't a problem for the purposes of this project; it's taking three nations and transporting them entirely from our modern world to a world where humanity never evolved :D I like some of those suggestions though... Iceland would be an interesting prospect - good links to both Europe and North America, and hundreds if not thousands of American soldiers stationed there at the time of the transportation...

What I find more fascinating about Iceland is their language, since it's very similar to Old Norse. Imagine Iceland repopulating the world and everybody sounding like an ancient Viking. That'd be awesome! :D

Japan also has a number of American soldiers stationed on Okinawa, as well as a rather potent military of its own and without foreign restrictions, it has the possibility of becoming a true superpower like during WWII.

New Zealand would start off practically unopposed in Oceania, with colonization also bringing with it a number of possible demographic changes, such as the Maori becoming a majority in New Zealand proper as a result of emigration or them founding a colony of their own to cultivate and reawaken their own nation. It also has a rather capable military force of their own, able to offer some resistance to the Japanese.

Madagascar would also have a very advantageous position, as it'd be able to directly colonize Africa and capitalize on the vast resources in the country. Congo is one of the most resource rich country in the world, should anyone be able to properly exploit those then they'd become an industrial and economic superpower in no time.

Cuba would also be a good candidate since it will speed up the colonization of the Americas. While Iceland my focus on Canada and the Eastern USA, Cuba would most likely take anything bordering the Caribbean, especially Mexico and the southern US and use the land for agriculture to fuel its increasing population as it expands. Many say that what's made Cuba such a success in contrast to many other Communist states is that they haven't had any food shortages, so they'd probably want to keep the agricultural output at a satisfactory level in such a scenario as well.

Borneo, a combination of Brunei as well as the territories of Malaysia and Indonesia, would serve as a buffer zone between Japan and New Zealand and would most like expand westward due to the threat for its rivals. They'd probably be the first to reach India and try to exploit its natural resources to fuel an army that'd be strong enough to fend of the other two.

Those are the motivations behind my suggestions, feel free to do with them as you please. :D

Sorry I think you might've mistaken me... I'm looking for three nations to take from our own real world, from the modern day, to transpose entirely into an alternate Earth where human kind never evolved :D They don't have to be former colonial nations.
