Aswang by necrophadian Aswang by necrophadian
A bunch of creatures from Filipino mythology.

The bat-woman is a Manananggal or "one who removes". During the day, they look like normal female humans. At night they sprout wings and detach themselves from the lower half of the body, after which they hunt for sleeping pregnant women. It uses its long tongue to suck out unborn babies from wombs.

The dog creature is a Sigbin. They come out during Holy Week and look for lost children to devour. They then turn the remains into magical amulets. Its weird because its feet are backwards and its head seems to be underneath its body.

The ghoul is an Aswang. (say ass and wang really fast, you dirty minds) The term can be used on any of the malevolent creatures above but it sometimes means the corpse eating ghoul. Like the manananggal they appear like humans during the day. They come out at night to feast on freshly buried bodies. They particularly like eating the livers of corpses.

Actually some 6-7 years ago i was searching vampire like creatures from myths all around the world....That time I came across Manananggal, Ekek, Wak-Wak, etc from the native Filipino myth among others.....Now a monster which splits itself in half is surely intriguing.....That's what inspired me....

Is that so....!!!!
By the way my granny once mentioned a creature called a 'Ghora-kan'(Ghora=horse and kan=??? in a Bengali dialect).
She came across these some 50-55 yrs ago when my Grandpa was posted to a rural forested location for some time. Tales of these creatures spanned across rural regions of North Eastern India and Bangladesh...probably even eastward towards Tripura...

Local people, she said, were terrified of that being and claimed that if it makes an eye-to-eye contact with a person, it would kill that person before taking any rest.

The creature had a horse's head and hooves but a humanoid body....more like a Tikbalang.....but sometimes the description is like that of a Centaur...

ever hear of anybody encountering a rakshasha in real life?

Nope...Not those fanged and horned demons..

....But people with rather demonic nature are indeed 'Rakshasas' aren't they...;-)

That's the reason nowadays people in India thinks of rakshasas of legend as power-hungry evil humans of the past.

Good God man! Just the thought that those things might be lurking at night gives me the creeps now, much less if I were a filipino child!

These successfully scare the hell outta me, and if such was your intention, job well done!

Hey; you got an ODD! Congrats! :)

I was just gonna comment/question if all filipino children have NIGHTMARES UNTIL THEY'RE TWENTY-FIVE!? O.o Nyeeeeh. On the other hand, I bet they ALL EAT THEIR VEGGIES. :P Nice work.

Hi There!
You have just earned yourself an O.D.D.(oibyrd's daily devs) feature :winner: ! congrats!
ODDS (oibyrd's daily deviations) are to honor the sometimes overlooked artists of dA that I personally think deserve some exposure and also, to introduce the more popular artists to the new/overlooked deviants. I prefer to showcase ALL artwork that I love (and that includes popular artists with a fair amount of traffic to their work) in order to create a non-biased feature of the talent on dA. *PLZ DO KEEP IN MIND - some of the features are quite popular and obviously don't need extra help - however - I enjoy posting them because they inspire other artists. Please click the link below to see your work featured and to view other featured artists . If you prefer not to be a featured artist, just send me a note and I will remove you from the list. Cheers! Sandi xoxo

Pretty cool...the hands on the flying chick is nicely done...although I can't say the same regarding the hands on the zombie thingy. The right hand looks to be rather crooked. The shading and tones are very nicely done...
