well time to write up a journal.

this was a horrible year. in fact it came on the heels of a bad year already... i was today harshly reminded of my absence here. i guess silence doesn't do much and i just never dealt with commiseration well... however as it affects my readership i probably should lay the cards on the table and answer some frequently asked questions as well.

for the last two years i exerted myself with overworking for some very simple reasons. there were family members with somesevere health issues and i was the only one able to provide the financial backing.
so i did what i do best... i drew tilll it hurt.

at times i would produce two full color comics a month +other stuff as well.

you can only burn the candle on both ends for so long before the flames meet and you burn out.

still, i kept going beyond that point and it caused health issues for me as well.  still family health problems seemed to subside. and then as some of you may know things took a dark turn and my mom died on halloween.

so yeah. fuck 2016.

i am doing better now. my arm issues have subsided, so i'm back doing what i do.  i write and i draw.

so this misery of a year aside, what does 2017 have in store for us?

hell if i know, but i can tell you my plans.

many asked ybout switch and death vigil.

well, here are some harsh truths. switch and death vigil were financial failures. death vigil less than switch, but nevertheless they never found a market to put it in corporate terms. not big on that but at the end of the day, rent must be paid.

those two, alongside ravine present 3 beloved stories that i wanted to tell

so, will i tell them?

well, thanks to sunstone... yes.

sunstone , my erotic comedic romance ended up being a sucess i never expected just as it was the story i never planned on writing.

and now it is the salvation to my other projects.

so, 2017.

january to march i will be posting the last 3 issues of switch here for free. there is no point in printing them as the earnings would barely cover printing and distribution.
after those 3 issues are done i will sentd the trade to print.

switch will also be the very last standard single issue comic i produce. from here on out, i'm makinggraphic novels only. so basically full ytory in one book.

after switch is done, i will decide whether i will make death vigil lost childhood or the second volume of death vigil in 2017. may end up making a poll..who knows.

those among you curious about ravine... well, if death vigil and switch were low sellers, ravine was a financial abyss XD

truth is sales on that book were so low there is no way i could justify  carrying on....

unfortunately... or fortunately, i was never a smart businessman. i do intend to make ravine volume 3, and give the series one last chance at life. there will be more info on it as 2017 progresses.

now, on the topic of tutorials and stuff like that, i started a twitch channel. i figured i could do q and a demonstrations or whatever there. microphone is still an issue but i will have that worked out very soon as well.

i don't know that's all that comes to mind right now, but if you have some additional questions, feel free to ask.

I know this is late, but Im so sorry about your loss. I'm glad to see you're still pursuing your passions and it's so kick ass to witness. I do wish Ravine had more of a following. I have the first two volumes and I cherish them immensely. Switch is also a HUGE favorite! May the road go ever on and be fruitful to you and yours!

Ignore the comment on your profile I discovered this after I finished writing it.

I am so sorry about your losses and difficulties. If you have a PayPal account and share it, we can share the financial burden with you. I'd gladly share a bit to support you.

I'm happy you're giving the runs that weren't financially succesful a second chance. Of course I'm happy for myself as I get to read more of those great series but I'm also happy for you because I can imagine that those projects carry a lot of meaning for you and were something you initially started because you wanted to tell those stories. Take your time, though. Burnout is a very serious issue and while I can only speak for myself, I'm sure a lot of fans will gladly wait as long as it takes for stories that are as captivating as your's. I don't want a rushed experience and I don't want anything at the cost of your health! Keep up the good work and better luck for (the rest of) 2017.

He's against crowdfunding. So donations/patreon/kickstarter is out.

Another artist/author told me it's like she's on the street begging for pennies and it's not a good motivating feeling for her.
I dunno know if he feels the same way.

Sad to hear that Death-vigil and Switch were not financially viable, but there's not much that can be done about that now. Is it possible for you to release the comics from an online distributor rather than going into print, that way you may still be able to accrue some profits rather than releasing them only for free(just saying it feels a lot of work on your part with no financial incentive otherwise...) I for one would happily purchase another part of deathvigil even if it was released free here. Just bouncing some ideas around and Wishing you the best for 2017.

As someone who's gone through something similar, I feel compelled to warn you that its less a matter of moving on and more a matter of waiting for the wound to scar over so it doesn't hurt as badly all the time. After someone you love has died, you are never the same person you were before. You just learn to move around despite the wound and it gets easier over time.

That's just life. All you can do is live it in whatever way suits you best and make sure you always find ways to show appreciation for those you love with the time you've got together.

Aaand leaving that morbid (totally unasked for) note behind, thanks for the update on everything. You bring a lot of happiness to a lot of people (myself included) so I hope some of that finds its way back to you one way or another.

Best of luck in the new year Stjepan Sejic.

Ravine has been one of the most beautiful comics I have ever read.  I loved the story too. I'm sorry to hear it wasn't doing well. I personally have the first two trades and have been watching vigilantly for the 3rd.  I hope it does better on its next go around because I would hate to see such a great comic disappear before the whole story could be told.

I always found comic books to be a horribly inferior way to consume stories.  Its fragile, hard to store or re-read and you only get a tiny bit of story each time.  Its nearly impossible to go back and find all the parts of the story you missed and... there is almost a guarantee you will NOT get a satisfying ending.  The only possible upside was... the comic form of storytelling had some truly awesome bits you couldn't get another way!

Graphic Novels solves many of the issues but *gah*  the price tag!  Such an expensive way to read!  Almost makes textbooks look cheep.  And while my local library had a few, the price tag made even them price shy.

Web comics solves all those issues of torn or damaged pages, missing stories and impossibly expensive archives.  Well.. it solves the issue for me the reader at least.  I always feel a bit guilty about reading for free.  And yet so many people have manged to make a living off this method.  (Including you)  How does that work anyway?

It's a real shame that these books didn't sell well.  I know I'm generally a trade waiter, yet I have all the floppies of Death Vigil and greatly enjoyed it.  Glad you at least had Sunstone to fall back on.

Here's hoping that 2017 is better for you.  Admittedly it's a slim hope the way things look now, but miracles are strange.

Bless you man, you've done well to come through what you have and still have anything like a sense of humour or desire to go on.

I started following you as a Death Vigil fan so for what it's worth if it comes down to a choice I'd rather you did the second volume of that than the 'Lost Children' storyline. Just throwin' my two penny-worth in ;)

How come that you, Stjepan, have such an amazing drawing skills yet have little financial success?
Why is that some doubtful scraps are sold for huge money and some good pieces receive no attention?
There're guys which make good art AND good money.
Something can be done, Stjepan. Something must be different.
I'm not sure what, but it is there, it can be found.

creator owned comics always were a gamble. mostly they fail but then there are times when they are a success. sunstone was a success. other 3...range from not so much to financial abyss XD

but that's how it goes. it's the inevitable risk of the choice to do my own stuff. if i was in it solely for the money, i'd just do work for hire. it's well paid and stable.

unfortunately i'm not a good businessman and i am primarily a storyteller  so i'll push this forward :)

And we can't fucking fund you.
Really?

I know what you said about crowdfunding, is that an excuse? Well, unless you're writing a new Harry Potter or your uncle is a billioner.
It's just seems to me there're quite a ton of people willing to support you. Just because they want to help.

Or may be I'm delusional. But cmooon

I read all three stories(Ravine, Death Vigil and Switch) plus sunstone... safe to say I cried when I found out the author I've come to adore at this point, has most of his stories suspended in the air with no seemingly open door to be finished. I keep those comics in my library nonetheless, hoping for a miracle to happen.

I already tell it mutliple time, but I'm really sorry for this horrible year you had.

About your projects:
Maybe you should think about crowdfounding for your book.
Only those who want will pay, you'll have limited stock to manage and no financial losses.

I can certainly commiserate about 2016 sucking.  Still I'm really sorry to hear about your mom and hope you and yours are on the mend from that loss.

Also I vaguely remember you mentioning Patreon at one point (though I don't remember if it was something you would consider doing).  You're the type of content creator that I think would really benefit from setting one up.  Even if you don't offer much extra incentive to do so you have a lot of fans who would like to support your work.  And while I'm really glad Sunstone is so successful I think your other comics deserve to be supported on their merits too, if that makes any sense.

Anyhow I really hope 2017 is better for you and the rest of us.  Take care.
