I had an idea for a version of Santa that was a protector with elf warriors at his side and this captures it perfectly! Well done!

Not many people realize Santa comes from two sources. Saint Nicholas was a real man from what is now Turkey who really did make toys for children. However many of the trappings of what we now think of as Santa come from the Norse God Thor. And boy would I love to know how that happened.

That would be the result of Christianity absorbing local pagan myths into their own so as to make conversion of the populous easier.

Oh yes I understand that part of it. All I'm saying is the Balder - Christ connection makes a lot more sense to me and no one has to explain it to me.
But what did Santa and Thor have in common other than being to large bearded men? If you were were going to mix Thor with any part of Christian mythos why not the angel Gabriel or any other of the many warrior Angels or heroes and not a quiet man who was nice to poor children?

*coughs politely* You mean Odin sir.

Because one of the basic themes of Christianity and Abrahamic religions in general is that by being like any of the great prophets or saints (ei - the quiet man who was nice to poor children.) you put yourself at somewhere near the same level as those angels and other figures.

Yes I meant Odin. Been tired lately. I said Odin in the original right? I think it was the fault of Donner and Blitzen. I was thinking of thunder and lightning and it lead my to Thor.

This is pure distilled epicness, when I see this picture I immediately think of The Dresden Files, in this series, Santa is Odin so it makes perfect sense.

This is suh-weet! Of course, those elves immediately reminded of Lord of the Rings, which is a lot cooler than some midget in a pointy hat.

Gandalf the White vs St. Nicholas the Crimson. EPIC MAGIC BATTLE!!

PLZ, could you try that? ^

Very Odin-ish. Which makes sense since Santa is partially based off of Odin.

Santa the Red, though? Badass.

Erm. No? Santa is based on Saint Nicholas and "designed" by Coca Cola. And nothing else.

Saint Nick was part of it, but there were multiple sources.

Odin's bit was soaring through the sky around Yuletime on his flying horse.

Sound familiar?

There was also the Dutch gift-giver, Sinterklaas, and the German gift-giver, Christrkindl (Kris Kringle), as well as the British Father Christmas. They all fused together over the centuries to become the one Santa we know today.

david foster's carol of the bells would match this nicely.

I have always thought an epic, high fantasy Santa Claus novel would sell, and this picture only makes me believe that even more.
