Description

This is the third class project for my Digital Art I class, alternatively called Graffiti Artist or Subway Car.

We were all given a simple black and white template. From there, we were told to choose an artist; the template served as a model, if the artist we chose was a graffiti artist, what would they do with this subway car.

Nene Thomas was my choice. I believe if she was to consider making a subway car, or to decorate one, it would fit her magical-nature theme. She usually portrays forested or sky scenes, populated by butterflies, birds of all kinds, horses, winged horses or unicorns, beautiful women in fancy ballroom gowns or similar garb, and fairies.

And thus, the log carried by birds and butterflies was born. A log, hollowed out, with windows cut out and leaves for flaps, carries at least four passengers to the next stop. Weary wings get help from fellow friends.

Photoshop CS5; about nine hours. I made the log, for the most part - colored and shaped. Used a log reference for form and texture; used a log reference to complete the texture.

(c) Nene Thomas for the birds, part of the background, butterflies, and women (modified fairies). Used with permission. No part of her work may be duplicated or used without her permission. [link]

For potential critics from the above group, please answer these questions (at least two of the three):

1. My Photoshop skills are almost nill, and I'm a complete beginner. What skills and/or Photoshop commands would you recommend me learn if I was to attempt this picture again (be it a copy of this picture or a similar project)?

2. The butterflies and birds are off center to represent their natural flight patterns. Butterflies flit and flutter, birds sway, tip and turn with the wind. Do you think I portrayed that well in this picture?

3. How would you have handled such a project as this? Do you think I perhaps made a bad choice of function (that is visible in the picture)?

Thank you!

Your questions are difficult to answer and I'm not sure if I can answer them. But I'll try and give you my thoughts.

I really like the concept - a wooden fairy magic bus. I think it's brilliant. The more I look at it, the more I like it. However, I think you need to make it a bit more apparent that it's a subway car because looking at it all I saw was a log. Maybe you could modify the shape of it to make it look more like a subway car or attached more cars to it. Personally, I would probably diminish the size of the subway car and make the background more apparent - maybe green like the foresty nature you're depicting.

As a tip for photoshop, I would probably make sure that the direction of light is the same in all the models I'm using. If you look at your three models in the foreground, they are being hit in different directions by the light, so they don't fit into the scene so well. You can correct this by digitally painting the models themselves if you want to (just make sure to use different layers <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w…" width="15" height="15" alt=";)" title=";) (Wink)"/>) As for your cutting out skills I think you've done really well - you certainly beat me in terms of cutting out in photoshop!

I don't really know anything about the natural flight patterns of birds and butterflies so I can't really comment if you've depicted them correctly or not. They seem fine to me as they are. However, it wasn't made clear to me that they were lifting the log - the bits of web I suppose might need to be a bit more obvious. If you add some strain marks, like creases to the gossamer that might make it more obvious too.

I'm not sure how I would have handled an assignment like this but probably not as imaginatively as you have. I'm not sure what you mean by function but as it is I think your piece is great. I wish you the best of luck.
