Let your daughter be a pirate
if she asks for a wooden sword
help her build her ship from empty boxes
and sail the vast backyard
because a box doesn’t only
have to store dead dreams
and she is so much more
than just a vessel.
Let your daughter be Robin Hood,
if she wants to be an anarchist,
a hero, a rebel, a rogue,
give her bows, and arrows,
and arrogance,
let her fight for the plight of poorer folk
because Robin isn’t just a boy’s name.
Let your daughter be a princess
locked in a tower so high
let her be her own prince,
don’t tell her to wait for a hundred years,
let her swing from her own hair
and grasp her own freedom.
Let your daughter be whatever she wants
especially when she’s young
and you’ll be enamoured by
the woman she becomes.

Reverse Poem
I will never be accepted by my peers Because it’s a lie to say that It is my right to be an original person My flaws do not define me Is a lie I am not beautiful I am not perfect Because I refuse to believe that I am worth it I have no power over my destiny And I am lying when I say that I believe in myself Because of my skin, hair, and tastes I should be an outcast And I refuse to believe Someone can understand me If they just listen to me My size matters And no one can convince me that I am pretty without makeup, fashionable clothing, or attention And we will never love ourselves if we believe that these stereotypes define us
D
Don't Step
Don’t step to me I may wear a frilly pink skirt, but I will TAKE YOU in a fight. Not even because I’m angry, I could just use the exercise In humility, so throw me your best haymaker, and I’ll take it, because I’ve never had a bone too beautiful to break it. No, throw me to the ground and I’ll memorise the sound because it’s profound that you think your pride can push ME around. They say words are the way to make a man break. But while you’re focussed on finding a phrase to prove your ego more great, you won’t see my hands palming your hate. Making mental memos of words, mementos of the curse.

Sonnet XXII
But give me leave to love in silence that which I cannot possess— and give me such inspired defiance of the urges at my breast— and give me strength to never touch my lips to hers, my soul to her soul— give me heart and hale to weather every storm that may unfold: But tell me how to live without my hand in hers, its honest form— and tell me how to wake each morn if not to wake within her arms— and tell me how I am to carry on, and how I ought to act and speak and be, around her, now, and ever: tell me, and I'll on my way as still and quiet as the passing day.

I'm so sorry to hear that's been getting you down, but happy to hear this piece made you feel more positive again. I understand how you feel, if I spend too long reading up on feminist issues I start to get really sad and angry. I wrote this piece when I saw a mother buying her little girl a wooden toy bow and arrow, and it was such a lovely little image of what gender equality can be, and it made me smile a lot, so this piece happened. Even though there are still so many problems and issues, sometimes you just can't dwell on all the negative stuff, and you have to be grateful and celebrate all the awesome women out there getting to do what they want to do with no shits given, and that they are encouraging their little girls to do the same, and ever so slowly the world is going to start changing =)
