Just checked out semi finalists and was very glad i didnt enter this contest.  I didn't see any serious approach to the dream subject, didn't see anythin contemplative and artsy and original. Also i didnt see any photography or trad art chosen.
of course feel free to disagree with me, but it wont change my opinion even for a bit. :)

i agree, for this kind of contests its better to submit something if you have anything fitting and forget about it. But i would not recommend to produce a piece just for this...;-) it saves a lot nerves:P

I say it was WAY to much of the same thing... good thing I didn't finish mine... it would have been much darker to say the lest... guess I wouldn't have gotten a second glance... O_o

Are you kidding? There is some awesome work on there! I found some of the pieces to be selfless and touching. I also read all the Author's Comments on the pictures and was truly impressed by the meaning behind some of the pictures. I was expecting to see some paintings of vampires and crap with the comment 'I want to be a vampire hee hee.'. Instead I get paintings about the need to save our environment, the worlds we hold inside, changing the world.

A lot of you people should be ashamed. seriously. i will agree that the contest is far from brimming over with uber-talented artists as evidenced by some entries lacking in serious technical ability... but [link] by algenfleger most likely displays far more talent and imagination than many of those who have posted/bitched in this room. algenpfleger rules. i challenge anyone of you to take a stroll through his gallery and not come back impressed... especially when he combines forces with janaschi. those two together are ridiculously awesome.

and don't even get me started about the time they were absolutely robbed in one of the previous contests... [link] despite the controversy generated by how they said they were going to use the money. regardless if you feel they were trying to pull anyone's heartstrings... that image fucking rocked!

anyway...

rather than bitching about how glad all of you are for not participating in the contest... the phrase "put up or shut up" comes to mind. you wanna see some diversity, some challenging representations to the "dream" theme while smashing hackneyed/cliched representations? then make some damn art and THEN complain that the judges are blind when your ideologically superior piece is passed over for obvious tripe, but until that time, you should be quiet. in all seriousness.

there are certainly problems in this community, but one i don't need is to hear others complaining of sour grapes.

perhaps i'm overreacting here, but i don't think any of you here have a right to complain UNLESS you submitted something that is at least equal to or ahead of the competition. if you're a better/smarter/more talented artist whose entry was overlooked for an obviously inferior piece... let's see it, and then we can complain together. do i think it's fair Wacom has no input? no, i think it's garbage, but let's be careful about making such broad and sweeping generalizations about the art and artists involved.

algenpfleger may not be a personal friend of mine, but to deny the talent (and yes, creative vision) of the artist as evidenced by the image is both insulting and ignorant.

i'm not condemning all of you, i see that some here have sense... but many of you should know better. you know who you are.

i've said my piece. i wish you well.

oh well, the contest theme was about your dreams for the future, for your life aspiration, and this is the reason why they didn't choose "amazing masterpieces" but "off topic".
So I guess everyone of us just like to think positive for his/her own future, and I also guess that a huge number of deviants want to be an "artist" in the future (I mean as a job) so everyone represent "the inspiration" (or at least this is what I felt seeing the entries).
I agree that the pieces have similarities. Surely, you can't like this way and prefer other things and concepts, but why this have to be childish necessarily?

I am not surprised at all by the finalists. Like Mel said, they were chosen by DA staff...that says it all imo. You'd have more luck entering SPECTRUM, at least their judges have an eye for art.

Yeah I noticed that with the last wacom contest too. Though I do agree they pick rainbow colorful artwork and it would be nice to see a variety in the semi finals. On the other hand I still think the ones chosen are very beautiful pieces.

Very nice of you to point it out. I didn't enter the contest -procrastinated XD- but it seems like that's what they were going for this year...
...
Dunno why some of the more "realistic" dream pieces weren't chosen...
...
Quite frankly, to me there is a very distinctive line between dream-like and fairytale...here's hoping they'll tell us why XP

Maybe the staff thinks that dreams are only rainbows, butterflies, hearts and bubbles?

This is really sad. Of course judging art is always something very subjective, but when a situation like this is the result; when good pictures of the seemingly more unpopular categories photos and traditional art are not chosen, something went wrong...
Where can you see the semi-finalists, by the way?

That's part of the reason I didn't enter. If it's not a digital painting or matte painting, there's no way you'll win. Of course not. Why bother picking a traditional painting or something that isn't 100% rainbows and gumdrops when eventually the winner is going to reflect on Wacom itself?

I am praying and begging that the entries chosen as semi-finalists in the Darksiders contest are not all works that use only the resources provided by Vigil.

But I guess Wacom was looking for something else.

Well it is truly not a surprise since the majority of the population thinks so. And don't forget that a lot of people thinks that being deviant (literally) is a bad thing :P

yes it is correct to think this way, since you can see official proofs of it. it is indeed not good.
