Taking photographs of water is fascinating: a healing creative process when nature becomes your friend. It calms you down. Water is a place where you can purify your heart and your mind. A town becomes a vibrant picture reflected in water. And the wind, moving the water slowly, paints a picture, just waiting to be captured…

Berlin October 2012…I stood on the river bank in Berlin and I saw the reflection on the water. Such a beautiful effect; like my favourite type of painting. Full of emotions and feelings; painted with wind and water. I reached for my camera and took a photo of the reflection, called What The Water Gave Us....
It was a mystical day. I was new in this big city. I didn’t know its residents; its places; the place I stood that day.

I’d thought I’d be one of those immigrant girls who left their country for some important reasons - finding themselves in a new place. Never worrying what would happen next; never planning anything. In my free time I would go to the river and take photos with my old camera.

Taking pictures of reflections in water became more and more attractive and appealing. Not just aesthetically. It became a therapeutic process; recovering the lost time and innocence taken from me. It was like coming to the surface, pushing myself from the bottom of the lake where I was drowning in my youth.

I was 17 when someone let me go in deep water. I started drowning. Wearing a T-shirt; it had been easy to grab me from under the water and pull me to the surface.  A man saved me then, but one year later he really hurt me, and the sense of this rescue disappeared. I lived through difficult experiences, sexual and emotional abuse; years of emotional harassment from the Religious Education teacher I couldn’t escape. For 5 years I lived alone; creating in an artistic group but living away from people.

So much time spent in bed, suffering from chronic pain, fighting post-traumatic stress. I forgot what touch and company were; closeness was impossible to imagine. I concentrated on painting - mainly Vincent Van Gogh’s and expressionists’ - and on music…

I wasn’t compensated for the harm and pain I’d gone through. I wasn’t interested in human relations or relationships. All conversations tired me, all question were difficult. The mask I had on became too heavy, so I tried to find something real, something special, and something soothing. But I trusted water. I listened to nature.

From Berlin I found my way to the Netherlands; a land of towns surrounded by canal waters, reflecting the life of those towns. During my years in the Netherlands in 2015 and 2016 I still worked on photographs. And whilst I was creating beautiful pictures I was undergoing a healing process. Getting out of the water and onto the surface: making my life and my suffering meaningful; using the reflection of an object to create a reflection of life. I was at a very important moment in my life and artwork where I felt I could finally turn my traumatic experiences into something satisfactory. I could feel that the traumatic experiences didn’t cause damage anymore; didn’t make me ashamed or hopeless; didn’t make me lonely. I was no longer a victim and I felt incredibly strong and relieved.  Finally, after a few years I managed to feel peace, to find balance and to open myself to compassion and love. The water reflection project gave me strength and helped me to believe in myself. I achieved an artistic level which I always wanted to achieve…
