When I stared Cardcaptor Torika I was in high school, and my dream at the time was to be a Marine Biologist. But when I realized I couldn't do the dissection needed for my Biology classes, I became sort of lost as to what to do with my life. Science was my favorite thing in the world, and I hadn't thought of doing anything else with my life. Comics were just a hobby, something fun to do on the weekends after homework and to get some traffic on my site.
As I was floundering a bit, I had to take my senior thesis class. We were required to do a major project and then present it in front of a committee and based on the committee's results we'd get to graduate or not. With being a scientist now off the table, I decided that since I had so much fun doing Cardcaptor Torika, maybe what I wanted to do with my life was make comics. CCT Anniversary Retrospective Part 7Part 7: What didn't happen
After the end of Emperor of Nightmares I had planned to do one more large special, a two part chapter that would take place after the series ended, similar to the second Cardcaptor Sakura movie: the Sealed Card.
The first part of the story was actually about Kero and Spinner. After growing frustration because no one respects the animal-like guardian and his lack of hands making doing fun things hard, Kero comes to Torika to whine about his plight.  Torika makes a deal with him and using the Change card, turns Kero into a human for one afternoon. Thrilled with his new form the first thing the now-human Kero does is get in contact with Spinner to gloat and torture the still cat-like rival. Not wanting Spinner to be left out of the fun, Eriol transforms Spinner as well, and the two new humans go to an arcade. Spinner is reluctant to do anything as he was perfectly satisfied with his cat form, but Kero uses his new form with style, eating whatever he
CCT Anniversary Retrospective: Part 6Part 6: The Emperor of Nightmares
The Emperor of Nightmares has one of the most interesting stories behind it in terms of development. Originally, the entire plot of this arc had nothing do with Torika whatsoever. It was initially a Cardcaptor Sakura/Sailor Moon crossover, inspired greatly by the SuperS arc of the Sailor Moon manga. Then it became a Torika/Sailor Moon crossover. Then it stopped having anything to do with Sailor Moon altogether. The initial story was that a mysterious being was attacking Sakura (then eventually, Torika), Usagi and all their friends in their dreams and the two would have to team up to destroy it. The Emperor of Nightmares was a former rival of Clow Reed and these two facts are about the only things that remained in the final version.
In the original Cardcaptor Sakura there were only two story arcs: catching the cards and transforming the cards and initially I was inclined to follow this same pattern. After all, after the end of Heart Cards there r

With the cards sealed and the Judgment over, the next major plot point in the original Cardcaptors was transforming the cards so they could draw their powers from their new master. This was important in the first series because no new magic would mean the death of the cards and their Guardians. In Cardcaptor Torika I decided to add a sense of urgency. As the cards' old master was still alive, they themselves were not in any danger. Instead, the danger went back to Sakura.
The design for the seal, book and staff for the Heart Cards arc came before the story was written. Being this was a magical girl series, and that the sun, moon and star symbols had already been used, the heart seemed an obvious next evolution. Of course, Torika's emotions, empathy and selflessness worked well with the symbol, but was not the driving factor behind the concept.
