Hi everyone, my name is Sean Jun and i am a concept artist/illustrator working in the video games industry, currently based in the sunny island of Singapore. I decided to take part in this contest as i felt it was a good opportunity to work on an IP that i was a fan of.
Before starting work on the project, i did some brainstorming as to what image i wanted to create. Being from a concept design background, i decided to give myself a mock brief and place myself in the shoes of a designer that was tasked with creating a production painting which depicts a certain scene for the next movie.
I started doing some thumbnail designs and sketches for the Jaeger that i wanted to create. Singapore being the sunny island country that it is, i had the idea of creating a Jaeger that could absorb the energy of the sun (hence the design of the Jaeger which has some sort of solar absorbing panel on the shoulder plates) and shoot it out through its hands in order to destroy the Kaiju. Once that was done, i used Modo to create the 3D model of the Jaeger. Once that was done, i imported the model into 3D Coat and did some material and lighting renders based on the environment that i wanted to place the Jaeger in. At this stage, i knew i wanted to do something different from the usual action/battle scenes, and had the idea of creating a scene where the Jaeger was being shown to the public at an open space, in a knee bend posture, and there would be crowds of curious people/tourist around, taking photos etc. Something a little more peaceful
I went down to the Gardens By The Bay in Singapore which was a popular tourist area near Marina Bay Sands. There i spent some time taking photos of the surrounding environment, while also visualizing and thinking of how i would want to portray the scene.
For the final render of the image, i decided to use the Supertree Grove's at the Gardens By The Bay for the background of the image. I imported all my assets and started working on the final production painting. I will probably upload a step by step gif image in the future or video showing my design process and steps on how i created this image from scratch.
Overall, i've had a really fun time working on this piece and i would like to wish good luck to all participating contestants!
