The sun had risen high in the sky, signaling noon. It cast its warmth to the canopy below, dulling the song of the forest to a soft lull as most of its inhabitants were tempted to nap. The cries of the birds rang out more clearly than most, the avians flitting between trees and dancing among themselves to enjoy the day, as carefree as the wind itself. Only one of them seemed intent to sleep.
Nikolie looked up at the raven perched on the branch that connected to his tree-home, the one known as Merle. He had his beak tucked under a wing, his form nearly concealed within the leaves; the male fox had no doubt that if he hadn't known he'd flown there, he would have missed Merle entirely. He looked to the entrance of the hollow next, able to make out the Iskan Lorca within. Her back was to him, and her breathing was even. Assured that the two companions were fast asleep, he turned and walked toward Abrette.
