I use vine charcoal sticks and texture paper (Arches Cover). Vine charcoal is very soft and falls apart very easily, so when I turn the stick on its side and rub it against the paper, it only gets picked up by the "hills" of the textured paper.

I only started with charcoal about 3 years ago. Before that all I did was the typical high-school sketchbook kinda thing. I work from both live models and photographs. If I'm trying to make a "finished" piece, then I work from a photo, simply because I have never been to a live drawing session that lasted for more than 30 minutes. There is a great amount of energy present in live drawing sessions that is fantastic to work off of, because everybody knows you only have a little bit of time to capture something.
