The Morrigan by Nambroth The Morrigan by Nambroth
My piece for the Corvid Portfolio ([link]); upon being contacted to join in on this great project, I knew I wanted to do something with The Morrigan. Several of the resources I looked up cited her as appearing as a hooded crow in particular, so I chose to depict her as a shape-shifted hooded crow.
A note about the celtic knotwork- I am by no means good at drawing knotwork, and there are people out there that do it well, much better than I! I did my best to make it original- that is I didn't outright copy any existing designs, allthough I did use a large number of images to help draw the patterning and figure the stuff out. I could not have done it with out the help of dozens of images of well done knotwork.

The original file is really large (you can see the design clearly in her belt buckle for example). And, it corrupted on me once. I hit 'crtl-S' to save it at one point earlier today, and Painter CLOSED. Without warning, just POP! CLOSED! And when it did that it corrupted the file. BUGGAR. So I lost a good 6+ hours of work on it, and all of my layers, because I had saved my backup in a bitmap format. Buuuuhhh. But overall, not counting the 6 hours lost, I probably droppd a good 25-30 hours in this piece.

Painted in Painter, mainly the oil pastel tool.

Would anyone be interested in a large format print if I am able to get some made?

Delightful, especially the mist and knotwork. You did a good job blending human and crow.

this is so beautiful. I think it captures something akin to the calm before the storm.

You might want to think about how you phrase things in the future, then :3
kwsapphire Featured By Owner Jul 20, 2008  Hobbyist General Artist
So basically you think Nam ripped you off because you happen to have an anthro bird? So, no one else can have an anthro bird? I mean, these two characters share nothing else in common, the colors, markings, everything else is different. That's like saying "Anyone who draws anthro cats must be ripping off (X) artist" which I'm sure you can agree is pretty silly. I can't even imagine why you think she's copying you. (Not to mention as someone else said, Nam's pic was submitted two years before you even became a deviant.)

I am not trying to start a fight, but what you wrote sounded very much like you thought Nam had drawn *your* character. Here is a copy/paste of what you said:

"WTF, that looks pretty much like MY characters! [...] Exept some small differences [...] Who would NOT think it was a bit suspect if they randomly saw their own copyright'ed characters in someone else's gallery?"

So it very much sounded like you thought you were seeing "one of [your] own copyright'ed characters in someone else's gallery". I have to disagree that there are "small" differences, since the two characters share absolutely nothing except the fact that they're both anthro birds. There is literally not one other feature that is common between the two.

So if you don't think she copied you, please understand that it very much sounded like that's *exactly* what you thought in your original reply.

Plus the two look nothing alike. At all. In the slightest.

Love the knotwork - it's so intricate! The whole crow/human thing is really well done too. Its inspired me to do something with her as well, but it'll never be as good as this.

I have a theory that all the Troubles in Ireland are agrevatted by this particular little war goddess, still hanging around.....

I am fond of the background, with the forest in fog and birds flying...wonderful!But the character is a bit "dish", perhaps with more effects of light and shadow, she will have more volume (especially the chest and the belly):)

Incredible.. I love the overall mood of this piece. Mysterious and haunting, but not frightening, per se. Not the mention the spectacular anatomy on the corvid. I've never seen an anthro bird before, and it's a refreshing change. =)
Waffenbaum Featured By Owner Jun 9, 2005
That's a great idea, really. Everything about it is spot on, and the background looks to me like exactly the kind of place you'd encounter that kind of creatures. Got a bit of "dense Norwegian forest" toutch to it, no?

OMG It's just like the dreams I had lately!!!!! I'm working on a series of drawings and paintings with women that have bird heads, like swans, peacocks and ravens...
I love this peace, though I'm not very into the myths theme, I've really liked it!! It's almost surreal!!! xD

I sympathize! I don't generally do more than 2 hours at a time...I fry my brain if I do more...but my computer has pulled that trick on me at the end of an art session too.

The knotwork is impressive, but I must say my favorite bit is the background. It's all misty without being completely dark, and the circling birds are a lovely touch.

There's something odd about her waist. It looks a lot more flat than the rest of the picture, almost missing muscles. The rest is fantastic, and it's one of the most interesting interpretations of her that I've seen.
