Rousing the Trees by Nambroth Rousing the Trees by Nambroth
Yellow Warbler
5″x7″ Oil on panel

This painting is part of Operation Gaia, under the "Early Birds" theme. A sweet yellow warbler sings his early spring song, as the trees wake from their winter slumber.
This painting will be auctioned in February (I will link when the auction is live!), along with many other amazing artworks from many artists, with all proceeds to benefit the National Audubon Society. Now in its second year, last year artists raised over $4,000 to help our avian friends. Help us help birds! If you’d like to create art for Operation Gaia or learn more about it, visit https://operationgaia.tumblr.com/

The auction is now live, as of February 19, 2018! Bid here: www.facebook.com/pg/Changeling…

Oh? I thought you didn't work with oil because it was too fumey for your birds?

After research I found out that the only 'fumes' from quality oil paint is the smell of linseed (good oil paint is literally just pigment and oil carrier), which is about as toxic as olive oil. It's the mediums and solvents that have fumes, and I paint completely medium/solvent-free! :) Which means my oils take eons to dry, but it's a trade-off I'm happy to make.

Good! Very good. I've really been enjoying seeing the oil work.

That drying business bores the tar out of me, so I usually bake mine. It's how oil painters 'age' their modern paintings (gives it a matte finish) but I just do it because I can't be fucked to wait and I like to glaze. I'm not any kind of painter, though; still just in the first stages of learning :C

Ah I see! I couldn't bake mine either, as I'd be really concerned over any off-gassing from the panels I paint on as they heat (now that could really hurt my birds). I just set them aside for a while. I paint very directly and usually don't glaze, though, so I can just set them aside to dry and ignore them because they are usually "done" at that point. If paintings are ever "done"..!

I love Yellow Warblers. I remember being so astonished when I first saw one. "How did I never see this thing before now?"
