Evening Breeze by Nambroth Evening Breeze by Nambroth
A lovely lady Red-Winged Blackbird balances on a fluffy cattail in the evening breeze. Special thanks to Chuck Rondeau for his kind permission to use his photo as inspiration/reference.
5"x7" Oil on panel.

This bird has similar chest markings to that of a song sparrow. My parents have three bird feeders in our backyard and we get a lot of visitors, the song sparrows being particularly popular in our area.

Great painting. For a relatively small canvas your details are nicely defined. The lighting on the bird's feet are done well. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I am flattered you noticed the lighting on the feet. Sometimes things just work well on a tiny part in a painting and I think "no one will ever notice, though!". But, you did!! Wow!! :)

Add me to the group that didn't realize there was sexual dimorphism with Red Winged Blackbirds.  I think it's the "blackbird" part that got me.

In any case, lovely painting.  You captured that moment of bobbing in the wind perfectly.

I love your use of values, how the bird stands out against the dark and the light background at the same time!

Sure do!  I have seen 2738473874 males and never noticed a female.  xD

I had one of these in my yard once, and it took an hour to find out what it was. In my defense, we are NOWHERE near any water or marshy area. Without their flashy boyfriends around, they are not easy to identify.

The first time I ever saw one, I was similarly intrigued and it took me a while with a bird guide to figure it out!
