This page is a prize and a bonus story page for Brothers. The story was written for a contest called "Becoming Baya" that I held last year to explore Baya the hyena's backstory. The winner was TheSheInShenanigans on DA. Her winning story is here. I adapted a portion of it into the comic page you see here.
To summarize what's happening in this comic page and what elements of the story Shenanigans wrote is canon to Baya's backstory in Brothers' universe...
Baya is the matriarch's daughter. She's a bit smaller than the other cubs and is bullied constantly, in spite of her rank. In this comic, the cubs give her those trademark "tear" scars because they were mocking her for crying.
Baya has a close (and unusual for a hyena) bond with her dad and constantly tries to please and impress her mother. She hopes to be the matriarch of her clan one day.
At some point during a migration to a new territory, Baya and her dad get into a fight with lions. They fall into a pit, and Baya's dad is badly injured. She's found many days later by her mother's clan, half-starved and severely dehydrated - nearly dead. And her dad died from his injuries both from the fall and the lions. During her naming ceremony, Baya names herself after one of the lions that attacked her and vows revenge.
Who'dda thunk that lil cutie would grow into a lion-pelt-maker/sitter and push two royals off a cliff...?

Okay I just had this thought (kinda just a what if of this what if) because of the part of the comic where she says "that's what my father said before I ate him," what if the starvation and grief caused her to hallucinate him being angry at her for thinking about eating him before she did.
Very nice! I like the backstory of the hyenas' culture that's incorporated into this story, with choosing their own names and the philosophy on when to fight. And it makes total sense that hyenas in the TLK universe would tend to be closer to their fathers than real hyenas since they have human-level intelligence and emotions.
Thanks! That was something that I saw in a few of the story entries back then, but TheSheInShenanigans's culture ideas had a special something that I thought tied in very well with Brothers. (Such as Baya's willingness to negotiate in the Pridelands - before the cape buffalo charge in and ruin it.)
It does make sense. I like to think that it's still unusual for a hyena cub to have a close bond with dad, even in-TLK-universe. Especially for a daughter hyena to have a closeness with her dad.
