Maainm by Naeddyr Maainm by Naeddyr
EDIT3: More! More aging! More grunge!

EDIT 2: Modified post-pro a bit to make it a bit more colourful, then a bit more aging.

EDIT: Yeah, view this in full by downloading it. It's half the size in the preview... huh, come to think of it, 3199/1600 ~ 2. What a fun coincidence.

The world map of Māinṃ. It's a world I started to build on for a small game project.

This thing devoured all my free time for a few weeks, until I got to a boring part (lettering), when I didn't work on it too much for a couple of weeks, but now I got back to it and it's basically done enuff.

If you want to know more about this particular world, check out [link] the WIP thread on the Cartographers' Guild forums.

Facts:

Diameter: around 18 000 km
Map projection: no projection

Programs used, in order of most useditidy:
GIMP (most everything to do with land-masses, and the mountains, trees, etc.)
Inkscape (graticule, geometric figures, straight lines, the small heraldic emblems, the corner diagrams)
MyPaint (lettering and the later small pictures)

The writing script: Latin-derived miniscule, original for this project, made by me.
Language on the map: Proto-Finnic etymological forms w/ modern Finnish syntactic and morphological constructions run through a set of sound-changes.

The little kabbalesque graphs are super cool.

Why do people say the earth is flat? They always jump and say it's proof. Earth is huge, so there's no way you would see the curvature. And people also say moving as fast as scientists say we are is also impossible. We are going that fast too. But hey, this is a cool and different map.

I like this map - mainly because it's so different to the norm (even the one I am busy with). Almost like a starmap overlaid on a landmap. At first I did not like the colouring but it grows on you. I love the fact that the writing is unrecognisable as it adds to the mystique of the piece and it's something I have been struggling with my own map - what type/labelling to use. I think I may steal that idea for my own map.

Thanks for the comment and fave. :)

There *is* a star map laid over the landmap. This is a map of a flat world (with accompanying flatworld physics), so the stars are actually things that hang from a dome 18 000 km in diameter. The map shows the star configuration (rotation around the axis) at a certain date, Spring Equinox.

The writing is actually a latin script, except an alternative fantasy one, a what if. The big title is "Māinṃlkuw - Idḷ kewi" for example. The language is a simple cypher/sound-change layer applied to a regularised and archaised Finnish base (I take Finnish, do some basic sound changes and it outputs something that looks like a Finnic language without actually having to bother with making one).

The colours of the mountains are meaningful, and that's what seems to be have been the biggest innovation (I don't know any other map that does this), and show rain and temperature. There are those red mountains on the left in the East (right is West), which surround a hot desert and form a rain shadow. Greens and darker hues are rainy, yellows and lighter hues are drier, red is hot, dark green is hot, blues are cold, etc.

This brings my thoughts to Pratchett's Discworld :P

The (current) quintessential flatworld, yeah.

I love Pratchett, and he's a huge influence, but in this case I mainly used him as a sort of "what did Pratchett get wrong?" template.

Protip: never try to make a flatworld that resembles as much as possible our own world's in its year and day/night cycle. I think I succeeded ok, but it might drive a better man to insanity.

That's one hell of a map. You seem to fit an astonishing amount in while maintaining the mediaeval style; I especially like the miniatures and drawings on the outside.
