Description

So I got one of those drawing tablet things. I dunno why, it's not like I do this all the time or anything. Seems to be what all the cool kids are using, and after seeing this incredibly positive review of a comparatively cheap tablet, (from a while ago I know) well, I couldn't resist. Takes a bit of getting used to not looking at what you're drawing on, but omgwaffles pressure sensitivity is amazing and I can never go back.

Anyway, I had this thing and it was sitting around and I wanted to, y'know.. make something with it and post it, because, well, if I don't, then what the heck am I doing with it anyway? So, lacking any particular inspiration other than "draw something dammit", I made this incredibly generic Celestia picture. It turned out, compositionally speaking, disturbingly similar to my other, better, Celestia pic, where her neck is actually the right length and stuff. Too bad my imagination is so boring.

Now, this was all drawn in the GIMP, which I have a few problems with. It's got a linear or higher pressure-to-width response curve, and I always end up with rounded line ends, which I have to go back and shave down if I want sharp points. I tried SAI, since that's also what a lot of folks seem to use, and it gave much nicer results, but I'm kind of put off by it's status as semi-abandonware, and am reluctant to spend actual money on something that is quite likely to not receive any updates or support.

I also have an intermittent issue with the stylus pressure sensor reporting non-zero pressure after I've lifted the pen completely off of the digitizer surface, which seems to be mitigated by twisting the nib around a bit and trying again. I figure this can't be normal, but it's not a showstopper, it just seems to mean I have to be vigilant about checking whether it's sticking so I don't end up with the last minute or so of strokes actually being one very long, very complicated line.

While this is the first piece I've done start to finish with this device, I did use it to ink and shade another piece which I'll be posting later.
