Oil on canvas
I did this during a trip to Vancouver island to visit my parents earlier this year (2013)
Chantal was a teen who was staying with some friends of my parents who opened their home to help her through her troubles. On the day that I painted this, I brought my art supplies to another couple's house in Qualicum whose backyard stretched out to the beach, where I joined my parents and their friends for a barbecue potluck style lunch. I thought I would paint the waves or something. Instead I painted Chantal, who was quietly reading a little book beside me.
After getting home, I finished the painting in oil, and gave it to my parents a few weeks later when they came to visit, so they could give it to her. A few months later I asked them what she thought of the gift. They reported that she had run away, and taken the painting with her. I wish her well, wherever it is that she landed up.
