Howleen was repainted by me

Left: my original repaint work on an Howleen Stein MH
Right: the factory makeup that Howleen Stein come with

so yeah, new Howleen repainting! I tried to make her look cute, but her eyes came out sexy and her eyebrows... I don't knot what to say about them cuz IDK what they express. I had a mistake again with the eyes and I couldn't draw them with pencils >< I prefer how they look when I use pencils, but maybe next time

feel free to critique to help me get better, but please be respectful with my work! I put a lot of time and effort on this :)

I would say her expression looks contented and peaceful, perhaps a little rueful or tired as well. I dunno about you, but I like this expression. The eyes look less shaky and more precise than your first attempt, and the subtler blush looks good too.

The eyeshadow did come out a little more sultry than your first attempt - was that your intent? It still looks good and aesthetically, but it doesn't have the innocence of the first one. If you were aiming for something sweet and innocent like your first attempt, then avoid having makeup so saturated - that's what tutorials for real-life makeup will say to you. For a sweet and innocent look, keep colours fairly minimal and not-too-bright and not-too-dark. Soft, subtle pastel colours work, as well as stuff that's closer to skin tone. You could also try swapping out black for brown, if you wanted to keep the smoky-eyes look (not sure how much it will tone down the sexiness, but it will definitely neutralize things a bit). As long as you keep the makeup fairly neutral, you can keep this expression (eyes half-closed) without being overtly sensual. Of course, you can do what someone before me said and open the eyes more, but I personally like this expression, as it adds a bit of character.

If you know how to, you could always test out makeup palettes on yourself IRL. Or perhaps a computer program can do this on virtual models. I would also suggest looking through real makeup tutorials and photo shoots as well, for inspiration :)

yes, I wanted to make eyeshadow to be very dark and intense this time, something more sexy and less cute for experimenting :)
thanks a lot for the critique and tips!

Ah, ok. I wasn't quite sure if you were aiming for sexy or innocent and cute after reading the comment. So I was like, "Well, just in case you were aiming for the other thing..." lol.

But yeah, I'm glad to help :) I often find that tutorials for more realistic things (eg: life drawing, anatomy, photo-realistic painting) really help for more stylized things (eg: drawing cartoon characters, or in your case, painting dolls).

i think if you give them more wider eyes and give them sort of a round rather than amound shape could do it

I love her eyes hun :D The repaint definitely makes her look less... umm... yeah. I hate factory paint on a lot of these dolls, it drives me crazy. And my kids love monster high, but the dolls just look so... not what I want my 9 year old daughter playing with/idolizing, you know? ANYWAY, well done on the repaint :D she's lovely

You know, I never realized how great these repaints are. I'm sure I'm merely dramatizing it, but to me it almost seems symbolic; shedding your factory resemblances to become an individual in a society of clones. It's made me very fond of these things.

not really, it's very symbolic for me too
repainted dolls are awesome (and I'm not talking about my work but the concept), they are unique and different from all the others, I see them like little trasures
