Secret Smile - WIP by mystikaal Secret Smile - WIP by mystikaal
I would normally put something like this in my scraps, but the scraps don't get no love! :giggle: But, really, my gallery desperately needed something new in it. I'll move this to scraps once I have a finished version.

After a long time of not drawing, I am trying to test out my drawing chops. Used a pic of Goran Visnjic for reference....not really a drawing of him cause it doesn't look like him AT ALL...lol. I am trying to push my pencil skills to the next level. It's getting there, I'm fairly close to achieving what I want with this. Just have some more tweaking and shading to do.

Hints, tips, crits, suggestions and all other luvins welcome. :D

That's one well done portrait drawing! Love the shading and the eyes came out especially well.
Now you could try and play around with it a bit in some graphic program; try some contrast and background textures for example. Just a thought ;)

Awww, thank you very much! :blowkiss: You know, you are so right...I don't know why it never occurred to me, but this would be excellent to practice with in photoshop. I'm still trying to figure out how to use it.

And thanks so much for the :+fav:, I'm truly honored!

Very nicely done! The eyes in particular look very expressive and realistic. I think you should try similar projects with a wider range of pencils. Softer pencils for more shaded areas etc. Also, rubbing off blocks of colour gives the illusion of reflecting light so play with that a bit. You've done well so far :)

Um, okay so I know this is from eons ago, but my message center is seriously overloaded from those months away. Thank you very much for your compliments. You're right, I should experiment more, I usually just tend to use the same pencil from beginning to end, not very artisty of me. I have all the different grades, I'm just not using them. Thanks for the suggestions!

Mind you, I rarely use more than one pencils myself so I guess I don't follow my own advice! XD

I haven't seen any new work from you in ages btw :(

That's my problem, I am afraid, though I have gotten a little braver than I used to be. ;) I will try, though.

Hey you!!! :blowkiss:

Thanks so much, I don't know if it's ever going to get finished, though. I tried to work on it the other day, and couldn't get anywhere. Hope it'll come back to me some day.

 Looking forward to the finished product! My only real piece of advice is to make it perfect without being so. I always like to make a point of adding a few loose ends. :D

hehe, well I don't know how to make anything perfect. There's always something that I can see in my work that I could have done better. I just work on it til I feel it is 'finished enough' to my liking. :giggle:

Damn, you just got awesomely better while I was away! I always loved your work, but it's at a whole new level now. And I love it even more! The shading and the intensity of the eyes are just captivating!

They're both amazing! Completely different styles. I saw this one earlier, but I commented on the other because it's so unlike my style (this picture is closer to it). Like I said, awesome and keep it up!

Oops, sorry....I thought I uploaded it after you commented. But, thank you, I really appreciate the encouragement.

That drawing was done 3 years ago when I was just beginning to transition from my cartoon style into drawing more realisticly. First time I really went all out with my shading, and blah blah....you really didn't ask, did you? :lmao:

That looks so realistic. Very well done. I think you have talent for portraits.
I will like to see the final. Keep working on it, you're going well!

Thank you very much! :glomp: I took a few days off from it, since I'm getting into the 'I'm messing it up' phase. Hoepfully, I'll be able to wrap it up soon.

One of my old drawing buddies told me that the other day, I just hope my talent isn't limited to portraits...hehehe....cause I've got a few non-portrait projects in the works. :giggle:

I suck at realistic pencilling ... (strikes proud cartoonist pose)
This is really good ... something about the tightness of his lips reminds me of Orlando Bloom ... maybe just because I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean last night, tho ;)

There's nothing fuddy-duddy about realistic art ... just means you have far more patience for detail than I do ;)

Nah ... I live with a digital artist. It just means they've done the rota so damn many times, they can do it in their sleep. It's like it takes me no time at all to draw a face, because faces are always what I start with so I've done them far more than anything else.

My roomie gave me some advice a couple years ago: messy sketching. Just draw and draw and don't care what comes out because it'll never be finished anyway, and pretty soon you just start getting faster and faster at it. Of course there's the flipside to it ... I can draw real fast, but I rarely have the patience to do an actual, finished piece ;)
That, and most of the stuff you sketch will never see the light of day ... but it's fun to look back on, because you can churn out some truly wierd things on the influence of caffeine and, dare I say, alcohol ;)

wow, I didn't know this was here....sorry I didn't reply sooner, you replied to your comment. ;)

I think I have far too much patience with my art, that's why I never get anything done, lol. I need to get some speed into my process. I look at some digital paintings where they say they were done in 5 hours or less....makes me think I am definitely doing something wrong if they can come up with masterpieces in so little time. :giggle:

hehe, well we all have our styles. When I started drawing, it was in cartoon style, and over the years what I wanted to see in my art slowly evolved into this. Maybe cause I'm turning into an old fuddy-duddy? ;p

That's funny, I've just seen two really nice realistic drawing of Orlando in the past two days ago...no influence, though. :giggle: Thanks hon, I've been studying the heck out of that picture trying how to figure out how to represent it.

Very well done! Can't wait to see the final. Only hint I can really give is wrap the edges in a darker shade. This will help round the face into the scene.
