No owls keep watch from atop the bartizans or crenelated castle walls; no rabbits or mice scale the crumbling plinths or skitter by the blades of grass that part the courtyard stone. The little Noibat known as Vauruk lay still on his bed, staring into the darkness beneath the thatched roof above him. It would be untrue however to say that he could not sleep. Had he closed his eyes and ignored the creaking of the house in the wind and the intermittent noise from beyond his bedroom window, he would have slept, as he slept every other night. This night was different. His gaze was set, and his limbs quivered; the hay of his bed rustled along with the pounding of his heart. Tonight he chose not to sleep, for tonight was the night of his escape. His stomach hurt in disagreement with the thought, and Vauruk winced. Many minute

“Hi Mom, hi Dad!” called Corwin the Eevee as he trotted into the house, past the living room where his father sat reading some papers, and past the doorway to the kitchen where he caught a glimpse of his mothers tail. “How was school?” “Great!” said Corwin, poking his head into his room only to drop off the satchel he carried. He spun around and pranced back the way he came, the floorboards creaking under his paws. “I’m going to see Herbie and Darren!” “Don’t you want something to eat first? “No thanks!” “All right. Be back before dark, okay?” By t

When he lost himself in his thoughts, sitting close enough to the edge at the peak of Mt. Avalanche often gave Lugia the sensation of flying. The wind gusted past the mountaintop, ruffling his feathers and brushing flurries of snow off the summit. Beneath him was a steep fall into the sea, but if he kept his gaze directed into the distance as he always did, he did not see the earth on which he stood, and he may as well have been soaring through the clouds. There were no clouds that day, though, and Lugia could see all the way to where land and sky touched. “Lugia.” Articuno stood behind him, his own wings and tail fluttering in

A cool breeze blew north from the Surrounded Sea. Chilled by the waters, it met the damp shore as a sharp gale. It stalled by the esplanade, whirling about the puddles on the pavement and combing through the few bare shrubs and trees. The puddles continued on through the streets like footsteps, and the breeze followed. It whistled through the moldy house walls, hovered demurely by heaps of wooden planks and beams, and prodded at the rubble on the roads, presently being swept aside by ashen-faced Pokémon with brooms. The breeze cruised on through the main street, circled the crossroad with the memorial tablet and the rows of flowers, and

Lenny had a secret. He found it one day when he was twelve; it was like one of those moments when somebody tells you you dropped something and you look and they flick you on the nose. Lenny looked. He kept the secret ever since. It ballooned within him. Lenny didn’t like balloons – he was always scared that they’d pop and startle him. He kept the secret with him always. He took it to school, and he hunched over the desk to keep it hidden. He’d keep his hands in his pockets and scurry from class to class. He dreaded presentations and performances - he thought everyone was staring at him, at his secret. Very soon Lenn

A great weight cumbered Lugia’s being; it joined him to the ground and he could not determine where his body ended and where earth began. He could feel the waters above, like rolling clouds of thunder, breathing a cool mist past the translucent walls, a mist that drifted down to caress him. There was something in it, too – flurries of thought and emotion, three some distance away and one, subtler, by his head. His head. He began to feel it, and at this realization he seemed to peel away from the earth and experience the ends of his form. His wings and legs were numb and he gave them a twitch. They felt heavy, and for a moment he

He came to a stop in front of them and peered down from behind his crimson collar, and the dense fog from earlier coalesced into thin tendrils around him. Vaguely, Lugia had the sensation of being pushed back, and through the searing pain in his side and the stupor that threatened to claim him, he felt Zahir’s pincer press against his chest. He’s shielding me, a stray thought told him. But what was the point? Even now Lugia felt the encroaching darkness; he felt it in the shortness of his breath and the numbness of his limbs. “You took

When Lugia became aware of the snoring, he knew it was over. Grumbling internally, he burrowed his head into the straw and bunched some of it over his scalp. The bed was warm and cozy and his eyes were still glued shut, but the snoring drilled into his ears with such persistence that any comfort at all was out of the question. Sighing, Lugia rubbed his eyes and opened them. The room was blurry at first, lit only with the pale onset of twilight. Too early. With a yawn, Lugia shifted so that he faced away from the corner, and, resting his head on his paws, observed his roommates idly. In the opposite corner, Aves hung from a bar near the ceil

Hold up... what are my favorites saying about me?
Just finished going through and editing Change of Mind - I should probably update it here. Time away from it has definitely enabled me to see its mistakes more clearly, but for perhaps the first time I was able to read it more like a reader. Reading ...
When I see someone favorite an old piece of mine, or follow an old story on fanfiction.net, I just think to myself... What are you doing? :o
