So, a lot has changed in the (greater than) six months since my last entry. I think that can be said of anybody. But the last six months have been a whirlwind, roller-coaster ride, so you'll have to excuse the clichés.
I organised our Burns Night Supper this year. For those who don't know, Robert Burns was a Scottish poet (perhaps *the* Scottish poet...like the one to rule them all). He is celebrated near his birthday, Jan 25, as an icon of Scottish culture. Anyway, the supper was fun, and I can't wait to organise the next one. Maybe I should go into event planning.
That reminds me. I need to start thinking about my career now. I turned 18 exactly one month ago, and now I am legally an adult (doesn't really feel much different). What have I done to exercise my new-found rights? I went out and bought a lotto ticket. Not really to win, but simply because I could.
And what better time to start thinking about a career? Not much better than now, I guess, because I just, this Monday, started work at my first job. Not as a McDonald's frycook. Not as a Starbucks Barista. No, I'm so cool, my first job is at a computer company.
Egocentricism aside, I really do feel special. I can come into the office pretty much on my own time, since work can get done outside as well. And, I have a lot of fun. Who gets to say that? An eighteen year old, working for a computer company, and doing what he likes to do, all for his first job. I am blessed.
I almost forgot to mention which computer company I work for. Not some big, chintzy tier one Corporation, but rather the humble, quaint, and I should mention local, System76.
We sell linux-based laptops, desktops, and servers, and despite being based in Denver, we do ship nationwide, so if you are an unlikely distant fan, you really should check us out at system76.com .
Which brings me to the summary of this entry. I am holding a little contest. This is targeted toward artists who are looking to get major exposure for little effort. I'm holding a vendor wallpaper contest.
Vendor wallpaper is the really obnoxious wallpaper that comes set by default when you buy a big, brand-name, tier one computer. Don't worry, we have a much more subtle design in store for our default, but we'd also like to have a few of the obnoxious ones available for the users to select. Something that says, "I run a System76 Machine, and by-golly, I'm proud of it!"
So do something bold. SOmething with graffiti. Something with bright, noisy, flashy colours that catches your eye. There are only a few minor details.
First of all, you should incorporate our logo. I have stock imagery in GIMP and Photoshop formats that you all can use. Just email me at email@example.com with a subject "Wallpaper Contest" for all the stuff.
Next, you should do two versions. One at 1600x1200 resolution, and one at 1920x1080 resolution. This is for both widescreen and fullscreen monitors. Also, because I like it so much, please submit in PNG format. You can send any ideas to the above email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
After this, several of my co-workers and I will select the winning submissions. I'm thinking ten, but it could be more or less. These lucky winners will be shipped along with all of the computers we sell after April 29th, for all of our customers to see. Big exposure.
Deadline is April 20th, so we can judge everything. Good luck to everyone out there!
