As part of the Artisan Crafts weeks, I would like to introduce and highlight certain galleries within Artisan Crafts main gallery. This week will be Costumery week and full of information, interviews and features related to this fantastic medium. In this first article of the week, I will go over the basics and explain what Costumery is all about.

In the gallery description Costumery is described as "Costume garments, props, masks, and accessories made to portray a character, animal, or object and include historical re-enactment, period, cosplay, fantasy, LARPing, etc."
Here on dA we have seven sub-categories for the Costumery gallery: Costumes, which itself has four sub-galleries: Cosplay & Fantasy, Period & Historical, Theatrical and Miscellaneous; Masks and Props & Accessories. While these sub-galleries are pretty much self-descriptive, I would like to talk about examples from each of these galleries and highlight a few fabulous pieces.

Costume > Cosplay & Fantasy
Costumes made for the purpose of cosplay or fantasy role-playing.

:bulletgreen: Cosplay, short for "costume play", is basically describing a performing art of behaving like and dressing up as a character with corresponding costume, accessories and/or parameters.
:bulletgreen: This gallery is for picture showing off cosplay costumes made by the deviants themselves, this gallery is NOT for costumes bought or made by others, general cosplay photographs or snapshots from conventions, which all belong into the Photography > People & Portraits > Cosplay gallery.
:bulletgreen: Fantasy costumes, like Steampunk inspired garments or other costumes not intended for Cosplay are also appropriate for this gallery.
:bulletgreen: For more information on what belongs into this gallery and what doesn't, please read Kitten-of-Woe's journal about the addition of the Cosplay gallery.

Costume > Period & Historical
Costumes made to portray a specific historical period or time.

:bulletgreen: Some artists take great care to make their costumes historically accurate while others base their work on a specific period or time and use their creativity and modern materials to mimic and enhance the styles. Both types of costumes are appropriate for this gallery.
:bulletgreen: Items in this gallery can be full costumes or single garments like spats, undergarments, historically accurate corsets and other such items.

Costume > Theatrical
Costumes made for the purpose of theatrical productions.

:bulletgreen: Costumes in this gallery are made for use in theater, both professional or amateur theater.

Costume > Miscellaneous
Costumes that don't fall into the aforementioned categories.

:bulletgreen: Most costumes fit into one of the three categories above, but some just aren't easily sorted, so this place is for anything that doesn't fit into any of the other galleries.

Masks
Masks that are made from any material.

:bulletgreen: A mask maker has the choice to either upload their work by material, or into this gallery. For example, there are also many masks posted in the Leatherwork gallery. It is fully up to the artist to decide which gallery they find more appropriate for their work.
:bulletgreen: Masks can be made from many different materials, for example leather, textiles, paper machê, polymer clay, plaster, latex and many many other materials.
:bulletgreen: There are many different types of masks, for example full masks cover the whole face why half masks usually cover only the eye area (some only cover the chin area).
:bulletgreen: Masks can be very plain or highly detailed.

..............................................................................................................................................

Props & Accessories
Items that are not garments but accessorize garments or serve as props for the costume. Eg. handbags, gloves, swords, wands etc.

:bulletgreen: Again, all these items have to be hand made by the deviant themselves, as with all galleries within the Artisan Crafts section on dA.
:bulletgreen: Artists have the choice to upload their work by material used instead of using the Props and Accessories gallery. For example, a forged sword can be placed in this gallery or into the Metal Workgallery, a leather pouch for LARPing can either go here or into Leatherwork. The artist can decide which gallery they find more appropriate for their work.

Keep your eyes on this journal for more information and artwork all around Costumery posted throughout the coming week!

I love this feature but I would like to see Fantasy and Cosplay separated, as they are two very different aspects of costume.
I think Fantasy costume often fits more under a variation of Historical than a Cosplay. Just a Fantasy and Sci-fi catagory I think would be a better division of this category.
MyntKat's avatar
They have been combined because many costumes fall under both categories at the same time. This way people don't have to decide whether to post their Elf cosplay costume (for example) in Fantasy or in Cosplay. Cosplay can really be anything, including Fantasy and Sci-Fi costumes.
tazzasister's avatar
Hmmm. I understand that. Perhaps its just me but I feel that cosplay pertains to dressing up as a specific character ie Sailor Moon, Legolas, or Batman. Where as "My Elf Costume" pretains more to just a fantasy or sci-fi genre.

I agree too, cosplay originally applied to anime and now people are applying it to anything, so I don't see how it can even be categorized. Personally I think that the category the costume is like sci-fi, games and such should be separated. Costumers can be cosplayers, but not all cosplayers ARE costumers, so I think if someone considered themselves cosplaying as, say, Princess Leia, if the focus is on the picture of the character it needs to go in photography, but if they want to show off costume details it goes under a sci-fi category in costumes.
Since people now apply cosplay to cover all costumes, and not all people consider themselves cosplayers, I don't see why the focus shouldn't be on the correct category. If they're 'cosplaying' a video game character, or a furry, or sci-fi, those are still distinct categories, don't you think?
tazzasister's avatar
I agree. I think Cosplay/Fantasy is such a general term because even historical and period garb can be included in that ie "I'm cosplaying as Anne Boleyn" or "I'm Cosplaying as a Victorian Woman". I think a Category for Anime and Video Game would be cool and then for one on Fantasy and Sci-Fi etc. I am just frustrated because as a costumer I do a lot of fantasy work and like being inspired by other fantasy work and its rather cumbersome sifting through the thousands of people's con pictures of them as Pikachu or any number of Final Fantasy Characters to find say and individual's interpretation of an elf. And that is not to degrade those that do Cosplay as their favourite anime character because some do it well, I just don't feel that work belongs in the same category of costume.
Verdaera's avatar
Right, if someone is cosplaying Anne Boleyn, Princess Leia, and a sports mascot, and I'm costuming an 18th century costume, a jedi, and a nightelf, the cosplayer would at the moment put all that in 'Cosplay' whereas I would put all but the historical in 'misc'. If there were categories that focused on Genre, the cosplayer can still be cosplaying, but filing their Leia cosplay under 'Sci-Fi', I can file my costume of a Jedi under 'Sci-Fi' and everybody's happy.
tazzasister's avatar
Agreed! Thank you! Can someone else jump on this and make it happen?!

I just posted a News Article hoping we can get some discussion going because I've heard tons of opinions on this, but none of it directed to the GMs, so hopefully we can get people talking and find a solutions everyone will be happy with

Cosplay is actually just a short form of "costume play", so it's not just pre-existing characters but also original characters. :)
