Today we are dissecting Leather corset by tupali

First off, please introduce yourself?

My name is Tina, I’m 51 years young (at heart I’m tops 25 and never really did grew up "properly" *S*). I live with my wonderful American husband in US but I’m born and raised in Sweden. I moved over here a few years ago and still going back and forth visiting family.

Please explain what we are viewing.

This is one of my corsets in the picture. This one was made around 2+ years ago for a woman in Scandinavia and was even presented in the daily newspaper in Sweden during “Gay Pride Festival” in the summer of 2006.

The corset is made of soft plonge leather and Chinese silk; I love the combo and have made several after this one when I was still making corsets.

Can you describe for a layman how it’s made?

All corsets I make is made of 4 layers of material. One layer that you will see... ”The Look” in this case the leather and silk. Then there's one layer of cotton coutil and 2 layers of cotton, type sheet fabric closest to the body to let it breathe.

This corset has acing both front and back, a request from the woman that ordered it, she wanted to be able to lace it on her self and this was the solution we came out with, and it works.

What tools did you use?

I do have my own hobbyroom but sewing is just a very small part of what I do, I simply love to try new crafts and I do get bored easily. My head is constantly spinning around with massive amounts of ideas. Often it's too many ideas, it’s hard to know where to start!
My favorite sewing tool is my sewing machine, a Husqvarna. I do have loads of leather working tools, too many to mention.

What was your inspiration in creating this?

I really don’t know, things just have a habit of "popping up" in my head???

How long time did it take you to make this?

A corset normally takes around 12 hours (effective time) but leather usually takes 2 more hours. I do spread these hours over a 3-4 day period.

Did you run into anything unexpected while creating?

This corset is number +100 or similar so unexpected problems is kind of a "past thing", maybe that’s why I just got fed up making them, hmmmm???

Are you happy with the result?

Ohh yeah, it came out as I had imagined in my head.

Where have you learnt your skills in this area?

Totally just self taught. It started with my then 18 year old daughter wanting a corset for a prom, then her friends and so on… That’s around 8 years ago now. I have however been using a sewing machine all my life and have made almost anything that you can make, from simple baby clothes to intricate wedding dresses.

Do you take your own photos? Any tips you want to share for presenting your work?

Yes I do, for better or worse! *LOL*

In this case, my customer was to far away to take a photo I used the "pillow trick". You simply wrap the corset around some huge pillows and then you have to do some work in Photoshop or similar program. This is sometimes my only choice to get a photo of my corset creations.

What is the best tip you can give to others wanting to test this craft/material/technique?

Just take you time and buy the right material, don’t go cheap.

Are you selling your work?

I don’t make corsets for the time being, maybe I will in the future but for now I’m having a great time experimenting with carving and tooling leather and yes, I do sell my creations.

Thank you tupali for participating and taking the time to answer my question!
