Hey! I'm interested in them but first!
I'm rather new to the whole original-humanoid-animal character subgenre, and I'm confused about something. What constitutes an original character? Like say you have two characters of the same animal next to each other, made by two different artists. How similar can they be before one is no longer "original?" I've heard tons of different explanations, even from someone who gets called out for "copying" others' characters because they're the same animal, and would like what you have to say about the matter.

I'm not the person you're asking and your comment is old BUT did you ever find an answer for yer question?
in my opinion if it comes right from ya head, it's original. taking inspiration is absolutely okay, but there is a line between inspiration and copying.
if you're being accused of copying because your character is the same species as another person's character, that's rarted. it's not unusual for different people's characters to have nearly identical color pallets, personalities, etc., but that's usually coincidence and no one (should) rag on you for it.
but if you're being accused because your character has the same build, personality, species, colors, AND other details as someone elses'? might wanna look into that a bit, maybe make tweaks to your design if you see it fit.
i personally wouldn't stress much about it!
