i had an assignment for my collage class to do an assemblage, so i looked up the word just to clarify what i should be doing, and it's defined as a collection or gathering of objects or people.
this is both, in a way.
just about all of these objects are from garage/house/rummage sales... or resale in general. some of the objects are from my own personal history (like the old photos are all my family members, and the stuffed animals, etc...)
the idea was to create this secret place in the woods, which is something i've always wanted to have... but with this i wanted to make it seem like a memorial or some kind of collection of these objects i have that were once someone elses but are now mine. it's a combination of histories that are now part of my history. i wanted to isolate it to really see how these things... assemble
, i guess.
and gosh, the weather was perfect that day for these shots. very cold though.
i'm not entirely sure how to categorize this piece. is it an installation? is it a photograph? teachers would tell me that this photo can't be purely documentation because it looks too nice.... but who says documentation can't look nice? i don't want to just post some crappy snapshot i took with a digital camera or something... i guess to me this is an installation that had a very short life. obviously i couldn't leave this in the woods, not only because it would get thrown out, but these objects are actually mine
this took 6 hours from start to finish. that includes time it took me to find everything and pack it all to installing it and packing it up again. thank god i had help that day (thanks john, aka ~Zoomwafflez
also, i am aware of the dust on the photo. i didn't have time to clean it off but i honestly don't mind it.
