Everything was a blur...
The fall at the gates had thrown both Kaylin and Zone off rhythm.  Were they ok?  Kaylin slowed her breathing, feeling Zone's unusually short stride begin to lengthen back to a regular stride.  She steered his nose left and right to keep the snapping mouth away from other horses.  Taking a quick glance back she searched for the white horse near the gates, but her view was blocked by another rider.  Closed in.  She pushed Zone out of a tight spot and took back on the reins, feeling him suddenly surge forward.  In front of him was the spotted rump of Inglorious Bastard.  It was too early to let him take ground, the speed would leave him tired on the final stretch.  His step changed from high and short to a long and low, an extra moment of lift in between strides.  Kaylin tapped the outside rein and the black colt swerved to the right side of the mare.  Hopefully in the time it takes to pass her, he won't find an opening to bite.
