When I was younger

By Murph3
I wanted to do a quick and fun doodle for my dad for christmas. It's his last year of eligibility to be voted into the Hall of Fame, and my 7 siblings have started quite the offensive to speak up and make a case for him, after 15 years of silence.

I'm a bit of a black sheep in the family, as my professional sports knowledge is nil, and my athletic prowess is nonexistent. Most people are surprised to hear that my artistic side was actually fostered and encouraged by my Dad, but that's just the way he's always been with me.

I'm not smart enough to argue his career, his numbers, or to compare him to other players (I only know a few others), and I can only remember bits and pieces of his career. But I remember perfectly sitting in our art room in Georgia, tracing the outlines of our feet onto planks of wood, whittling sticks and bars of soap on the back porch, admiring my dad's doodles that he would do of all our names, and carving our initials into trees as we tried to hunt bats with our BB guns.

I don't know if he'll get in the Hall, but... it really doesn't matter to me.

My sister’s best friend’s husband is like this, he was a cop and before that a pro in the NFL, AND now has two autistic diabetic sons. Remarkable man and father. I’d like to share this with them, if you don’t mind.

Those are great memories... Thanks for sharing them so colorfully, and especially with the "doodle."
Your Dad made a lot of lonely nights very special to me watching Braves Baseball on TBS....Never was much of a sports person and i'm like you with no athletic ability but those Braves made me love that game....He belongs in the Hall Of Fame but if he never makes it to Cooperstown, you tell your Dad that he's in mine and thousands of other Brave's fan Halls of Fame.....Tell your Dad, THANK YOU!

This is very beautiful and touching! You're a great artist!

I really hope your dad gets into the Hall of Fame and I wish him the best, but I'm glad that it doesn't matter to you either way.... I believe that is part of what makes a father-son bond so special - loving each other no matter what the status one holds.

Oh, and I wish you congratulations on your very well-deserved Daily Deviation!

Definitely one of the best 'doodles' I've ever seen, this cartoon...and great sentiment to boot. I'm more the photographer and less the artist but I wish I had had the encouragement you so obviously received. Seven siblings? That's not a family, that's a 'voting bloc'...! Go for it!

D'awww :3 Really hoping your dad gets in. The Braves are my favorite team. My first full (grammatically correct) sentence as a child went along the lines of something like, "Chipper hit the ball! :D" since Chipper was my favorite.
