"In ancient times, the land lay covered in forests, where from ages long past, dwelt the spirits of the gods. Back then, man and beast lived in harmony. But as time went by, most of the great forests were destroyed. Those that remained were guarded by gigantic beasts, who owed their allegiances to the Great Forest Spirit. For those were the days of gods — and of demons."
I was thrilled and honoured to be commissioned to make a Princess Mononoke piece which I am now very happy to share with you all. The piece reads from bottom upwards, telling the story of Ashitaka from his banishment from his home, his journey through the world of men into the forest of the Gods and Iron Town.
Watching the film and taking notes and sketches was a pure joy. The detail and beauty of the Studio Ghibli animation is inspirational and is still the benchmark of quality art and craftsmanship that I strive towards.
Layered, laser cut, stained plywood illustration measuring 645 x 265 x 15 mm.
